So their "killer feature" is a way to share files by having to physically touch two of these devices? Isn't that just a fancy sneaker-net approach to file sharing?

I thought one of the benefits of the Internet is that I can share a file without being next to the person receiving it.

Sounds like the next big thing is a step backwards.

Samsung is making one HUGE mistake here.

They are trying to convince iPhone 5 buyers to get a Samung Galaxy S III instead, right?

The thing I don't understand: why are they ridiculing the customers they want to have?

It's like a salesman saying "HAHA! You are so dumb and ugly. You stupid idiot. Now, please buy the Galaxy S III."

Samsung is trying to insult every iPhone user out there — and than they try to sell a Samsung product to that same user.

I mean, Samsung makes great products too... but with ads like these, they are losing me.

Nope, I said it before and I'll say it one more time. They're not trying to sway iPhone users. They are targeting consumers that are undecided and don't know the difference and just the regular average joe. This kind of marketing is very effective. They're asking the viewer, "Do you want to stand on line and be just like these fanboys, or do you want to get a phone that's better and already here?".

LOL

Obviously, it is not effective as it is making iPhone even more popular to even non-Apple fans or undecided demographics they are targetting who do not care for either, as they become curious and then they will find out how ugly Samsung products are vs. Apple's or that the hype is justified in Apple's favor. Free publicity for Apple. This is pure desperation, nice try (yet again, the end result is fail), and thanks for the laughs :D lol. It did not work the first time ... I know lot of people regretting buying Droids and even SIII (they just realized it's an ugly and tacky cheap looking gigantic mini phablet) after seeing the new iPhone.

This ad is only effective for phandroids as they think it is a validation of their seething iHate. Oh well, kudos, it was pretty funny as an entertaiment video but will never work as a marketing tool. Let your products speak for themselves.

They're not trying to attract iPhone users or fanboys. They're going after the undecided and regular Joe. In a sense they're asking the viewer, "Do you want to be a blind fanboy, or do you want a better smartphone?". You would be surprised how effective a commercial like this can be. I used to work for a firm that does consumer testing and I was surprised at how effective and consistent the results were.

I'm an iPhone user and I am getting the iPhone 5 but I find this commercial to be very funny and accurate.

"Undecided and regular Joes" don't stand in line waiting hours to buy an iPhone

pretty funny.
I have a GS3 and love it but have enjoyed iPhone and LOVE our retina MBs, great build quality.
This was funny though. Great move Samsung.

Line waiters are not new customers, This Ad is trying to sway the "undecided" not you and me.

Line waiters who convert are new customers

And it's not so much they're trying to sway the undecided as it is with that kind of ad, undecided are the only people left

If they made fun of the product and not the fans, they would've swayed both the undecided and Apple fans. Basic marketing/PR = don't insult the customer

Personally, thought it was a pretty darn funny ad, guys stop moaning and over analysing and just enjoy the humour.

Waiting for my '5' to arrive......... C'mon C'mon C'mon!

More like an "it just works" approach that anyone can use. No menus. No fuss. No training.

I thought one of the benefits of the Internet is that I can share a file without being next to the person receiving it.

You can still do that, if you want to press a bunch of keys and use data, etc. However, the whole point of Beam is to make transferring info to a person next to you, very easy.

Sounds like the next big thing is a step backwards.

Sounds like you don't understand what Android Beam is, and instead of asking first, you diss it.

It's another use for NFC:

With Beam turned on, you just put the phones next to each other, tap the confirmation box, and the current app transfers what you're looking at.

No need to pick out a contact to email it to, or attach a link, or any of those time-consuming methods. Examples:

  • Looking at a web page -> tap -> other phone opens browser to that page
  • Looking at a map -> tap -> other phone is looking at the same location
  • Navigation directions -> tap -> other phone now has same directions
  • Watching a YouTube video -> tap -> video opens on other phone
  • Looking at photo(s) -> tap -> transfers photo(s) to other phone
  • Looking at a contact -> tap -> other phone gets copy of contact
  • Using an app -> tap -> other phone opens to that app in the Market
It's a quick, easy and fun way to share info between yourself and friends.

My son-in-law and I use it to share web pages when we're relaxing on a couch, or to share directions before heading out to eat at a new place.

I can't even count the number of times on both hands that I've wanted to share a playlist with someone. Because I've never wanted to. Ever.

I don't know what type of person would want to share their playlist..of all things in e entire world..with someone else. I mean..I understand sharing playlist maybe with your parents, to make them listen to cool music..but sharing with a friend..? Creepy. Like my friend has no taste of his own, or he prefers my..playlist..over his. What?

Not to mention the whole "touching" phones part, that's just wrong.
"Want this image? Let's rub our phones together!" ....what..?

Not to mention its portraying their potential customers as dumb people who don't know any better.."HOW DID YOU DO THAT OMG YOU'RE A WIZARD!"

Never heard of the "Bump" sharing app for the iPhone and others?

Right, because Apple never uses the word "magic" to explain things to their fans. Well, except maybe about a dozen times per new device intro. Or maybe you're just overthinking normal surprise and curiosity.

Can you answer my other question though? Do both people have to have the same GS3 to use S-beam? Can you S-Beam to say a Blackberry with NFC or a Razr?

I feel disgusted.

People will say — don't take this seriously or it's just a phone. Tell that to Samsung. It's shameful, no body can do **** about such things when a vast majority of consumers are being ridiculed again and again!

Never heard of the app. Sorry. Doesn't change the fact that it's still awkward for people to rub their phones together. =P

And yes, Apple also uses the word too much, which gets annoying too.
It's equally annoying for both companies. Both of them try to make it look like we have never experienced something like this before.

The fact that I hate about this ad is that it makes consumers look like they have no idea what the technology is. Including the Android party. There are billions of better ways to make an ad. And this isn't one.

Please tell me you are an investor in Apple!

Nope. I'm a graphic designer in New York. Just because I standy by a company that I've been using for the last 12 years doesn't make me an investor in apple. Now, run back to your bridge, troll, immature comments don't affect me.

So Apple didn't really add anything new - they just copied ideas from others and used them as their own? Yeah, that's generally what Apple has been doing for the last year or two.

They aren't advertising anything as new, and everyone knows it isn't new...they aren't idiots. S Beam isn't new, but then neither is Bump. And Panorama is quite old. Dictation has been around for about a decade. And there are apps that do all these things. All Apple is doing is improving on the existing stock and mixing it into the OS to work much better. I have Panorama apps, but they don't work great. I'm sure Apple have worked up a treat. Google Maps may be great elsewhere, but it sucked on iOS. They changed that up and made a really great mapping solution here, with Tom Tom, Yelp and many others.

And this isn't limited to Apple either. Like I said, Samsung is advertising all this stuff as revolutionary, but it's not. People think it's new and Apple can't do it...they are wrong. Apple doesn't need to mix everything in when you have such a large app store. But somethings are better mixed in. Like Panorama. Better then having a separate app where it saves separately.
