They use Technology, cutting edge innovation, design, and service as a selling point as well. They merge it all together in every model. Apple used to do this. I just wish Apple would make me go "WOW!" again.

LOL. Apple doesn't do that? Apple does cutting edge things all the time... They do all of those things.

What you think Apple should be doing is akin to BMW putting a 500 horsepower engine in every single one of their cars.

I wonder how many components inside the iPad have SAMSUNG stenciled on them?

Which is what makes it even more pathetic. A decent amount of the parts in the ipad are samsung, yet samsung themselves cant even make a product nearly as good.

Did you not see what I bolded in my post? The point is it is not merely "customized" by Apple. It is designed by Apple.

Not totally from scratch, of course. As you put it:

Apple licenses ARM's architecture, and does their own logical and physical design for at least large swaths of the chip.

The only single word I could think of to describe exactly that, in the one second I had before walking our dog, was "customized".

If you have a better one-word description, I'll be happy to use it next time :)

They are just being honest. That's a stark contrast to Steve Jobs' BS that we just heard at iPad 2 event (first tablet with dual core CPU, rrrright). Also the original article spreads usual pro-Apple propaganda. Galaxy Tab for US$900? Is this a reference to some European pre-release prices? Just a BS.

If only Steve Jobs was that honest and said - yeah, we screwed up with RAM, and cameras and no-SD card and no 4G.

So the definition of a screw up is not having what YOU want, got it.

And you spread a little BS there yourself deliberately misquoting Jobs.It will be the first one to ship IN VOLUME.

Oh-and you have no idea how much ram it has.

There have been some cool uses for magnets. Apple must've looked at everyone else using them, and figured it was the hot thing to do :)

Blackberry - magnetic holsters to change mode

Palm Pre/Pixi - magnetic alignment for their inductive charging Touchstone base.

Most Android phones - magnetic docks that automatically turn them into fancy weather / news / music / alarm clocks.

HTC WinMo phones - magnetic stylus holder, which also automatically opened the notepad app if you pulled out the stylus during a call (very slick!).

kind of but not really.

whats that other one...magsafe something?

Yeah, to compete with Apple, Samsung just need to remove 1/2 the ram, 1/2 the storage space, swap out the 8MP camera for a sub 1MP, take the flash out and offer 3G as an option. Then they might be able to get down to a starting price of $500. Even though for the tablet to be of any real use, 3G is a must.

real use for who? so a doctor walking around the hospital on their wifi checking in on patients and the hospital database wouldnt be a real use? Are you sure about that or just rambling?

Ok, I do. We call that "designed." It's no different than what we did at AMD - we weren't "customizing" globalfoundries chips. We licensed x86, designed the chip, and had it fabbed (at the end by Global Foundries, as AMD spun out its manufacturing). No one claims that wasn't done "from scratch."

That's the same thing as what Apple does.

Totally agree with u after reading ur post.... seems so funny... wondering how they reacted after seeing iPad being such a huge success....

Why, they forgot what they had said, and now they've skipped on to saying things like, "But the Xoom has extra storage! And the other tablet, which has only been announced, so we can assume it's all true, has Flash! Oh, wait, not until a few weeks more, but they promise, it's coming, and it's the magical kind of Flash that doesn't hurt the battery life, which they way will be 100 times longer than the iPad!"

You know, that form factor and style that they were so sure wouldn't go anywhere, which all the other manufacturers are pulling their hair out trying to imitate?

SJ doesn't need to be honest or actually say anything. The device is what it is. He can call it a unicorn that shoots pixie dust out of its ass - it doesn't change what it is and what value proposition it offers the consumer.

There's no screw up here. It's deliberate. Just like the iPad 1st gen. It's not about raw specs and components. It's all about the synergy between hardware and software. Apple has no equal in this realm. When this synergy is optimal, it makes for a superior user experience. Add to that the most robust mobile ecosystem on the planet and you've got a quality experience through and through. It's not about needs. It's about desire. Apple creates products in such a way that consumers *want* them, and then keep wanting them. It's the same successful principles that Apple implements over and over and over again, and which the also-rans just don't seem to get or are too lazy to investigate. Things that have always been common between Apple devices and OSes. You recognize (and everyone does) the "Apple Way." It's obvious and discernible and recognizable from a mile away. And it works. Time and time again. Whether it's a computer we're talking about, or a phone, or a tablet.

Amount of RAM seems to fade into the background when your apps run fast and optimally on the hardware already there, wrapped in a beautiful exterior design. Apple can do with 256mb what others can only dream of doing with 512mb, for example. Think about it. THAT is the beauty of controlling the experience. Those who are serious about software make their own hardware. They don't license their OS to anyone that can slam together a box.

All in all, the new iPad will not only sell in record numbers, it will maintain and extend Apple's dominance in this area. Hey, don't take my word for it. Take Samsung's.

You need to adjust and redefine your notion of "value." Even though it's a very personal thing, your idea of it can still be misinformed and out of touch.

Because they licensed the instruction set ("software" specification), they didn't design the chip (hardware). They just "customized" it.

Usually your comments are interesting and informative but that one is a definite "huh?"

To be fair, not everyone understands the nuances of CPU design, and the press frequently misrepresents how it works. Further, A4 was a bit of a transition processor in terms of what was done by Apple vs. Intrinsity for Samsung.

I happen to have a friend who's a great cook, who can put together a gourmet meal using exactly the same fresh ingredients that I use to cook meals that are .... um ... edible.

Competing tablet manufacturers ... and apparently some geeky customers as well, have yet to learn that, with a consumer device, it's not the components and their specs, it's what the software and design and manufacturing and marketing team cooks up with the components.

I hate to say this, I really do, but Apple is slowly loosing the tablet war. I love iOS dont get me wrong but Android has so many features that currently put it leagues ahead of iOS. The iPad is currently for people who do very simple tasks brows the web check email watch media, Android has become the operate system for people who are more teck savvy. But, and this is a big but, Android has no developer interest making it almost DOA and on top of that most Android devices have horrible build quality. The thing is that Android will steadily gain developer interest until its app base is much closer to that of iOS and thats when Apple will have officially lost OS wars. If Apple really wants to blow Android out of the water iOS 5 will have to show an extreme, I mean extreme increase in its feature set. I hate it I really really hate it because the iPad and all Apple products are AMAZING but it seams they have sold them selves short with iOS which pretty much cripples their amazing devices. Just my 2 cents! :)

With its remarkable thinness, excellent specs (for what the consumer not a spec whore needs), integrated OS, advanced ecosystem, retail stores, and aggressive pricing likely due to cornering the market on components, it seems to me that Steve had a long range plan when it comes to the iPad. All of the pieces needed to be in place until…boom.

I don’t see him being a man who forgives past mistakes, and I’m sure he was determined not to repeat losing the desktop wars.

I'm afraid

Wow, Steve must feel very good about the iPad. Do you remember those post from last year about people complaining how bad the iPad is? It's so funny to read these comments again. :p

At the current rate of attrition Apple will no longer be dominating the tablet market in the year 2985 when their market share will fall just under 60%.

IOS is streets ahead of honeycomb, yeah yeah yeah.

The iPad is currently for people who do very simple tasks brows the web check email watch media, Android has become the operate system for people who are more teck savvy.

I am not even sure what to make of that. I will just leave it alone now. The most tech savy people I know use IOS devices.

But, and this is a big but, Android has no developer interest making it almost DOA and on top of that most Android devices have horrible build quality.

Why do you think that? The marketplace is a bit of a mess and it is not secure. There is no user confidence, as opposed to the App Store which has MASSIVE user confidence. Which means it is really easy for developers to separate IOS users from their money, much easier than doing it on Android.

That is not going to change unless Google makes some fundamental changes, and I don't see that happening. Google has its own agenda which supersedes whatever is going on. People don't understand who Google serves as their customer. It is not the consumers who use Android devices, and it is certainly not the hardware makers who use android on their devices. As long as Google has a completely different set of priorities for what they are doing from Apple, it is going to be highly unlikely for the android ecosystem to change enough to challenge Apple.

If people really want a challenger to Apple's ecosystem they better hope HP/Palm can pull off a miracle or Microsoft can pull off an even bigger miracle.

Android is what it is, and will continue to be what it is. What it is not now and will never be is the premiere mobile ecosystem.

Ok say that iOS stays exactly the same as it is now and then repeat that sentence! If Android continues to progress the way it is and Apple continues to let iOS sit un attended to then I can see Apples market share reaching 60% in 2 years. And your not factoring in the fact that other tablets are very new no one can predict how fast other companies will begin to take over the tablet market.

Actually, analysts are predicting just the opposite.
Apple will lose the market dominance to Android tablets in a couple of years.

According to a March 4 report from RBC analyst Mike Abramsky, only 0.three percent from the world's population has thus far bought a tablet, leaving a big, massive industry of potential purchasers.

By 2014, Abramsky expects that over 400 million folks will own tablets, with 185 million models shipping in 2014 and that 40 % of 2014's gross sales will be tablets working Google's Android OS.

The reason for this will be Android's "broader support from OEMs and carriers and anticipated budget-priced Android tablets from Asia," wrote Abramsky, according to U.K. site FoneHome. They are basically, the same elements that enabled Android to be the major mobile working system in only two years.

Lots of drug induced assumptions. The reason Apple is doing so great is because they are always one step ahead, if not more. Android is progressing in the wrong direction.

Of course they will. Apple vs hundreds of other companies selling multiple versions of tablets. In terms of money it will be the same though as in Apple takes all the money.

Believe it or not I actually agree with you because Apple will come out ahead no doubt about it I just think its time for them to start take some steps to get their. But no they are not always a step ahead look at their notification system its been behind ever since android was released. I dont mean to be pessimistic or sound like some hater or something, I simply am a little frustrated with the lack of development on iOS over the last year. We all thought we would see some improvements at the iPad 2 press event but we didn't and you can't tell me that iOS is perfect, no way! How is it drug induced to believe that its time for Apple to do a little work improving the operating system that makes their awesome devices run?
