I love my Apple stuff and I'll give them crap when it is due but this is the best post ever!!!

Wow, Steve must feel very good about the iPad. Do you remember those post from last year about people complaining how bad the iPad is? It's so funny to read these comments again. :p

They are just being honest. That's a stark contrast to Steve Jobs' BS that we just heard at iPad 2 event (first tablet with dual core CPU, rrrright). Also the original article spreads usual pro-Apple propaganda. Galaxy Tab for US$900? Is this a reference to some European pre-release prices? Just a BS.

If only Steve Jobs was that honest and said - yeah, we screwed up with RAM, and cameras and no-SD card and no 4G.

I like how you conveniently leave out the part about SHIPPING EN MASSE dual cores. There is a difference! But I guess, like you accuse Jobs, it's difficult to be honest!

The Xoom is shipping in volumes. Steve Jobs distorts the truth, there's nothing new or especially surprising. He even got the Samsung quote wrong about sales. The Samsung Exec never said small.

That doesn't change the fact that the iPad dominated 2010 as far as tablets goes nor does it make the iPad 2 anyless than what it is. I don't see why so many posters are quick to try to defend Steve when he bends the truth when the Apple RDF is a well known fact in the industry.

As an Apple user, you're better off just shrugging it off and moving on with your life when Steve does something like this. Trying to find ways to justify it just raises your stress level uselessly.

lol wow… sounds like Samsung was really caught off guard by Apple - but did they really think Apple was going to up the price by 50%?

Yes, surely that can't have come as a surprise?

Apple always use to keep similar prices for their products after they do those yearly bumps. *shrug*

The iPad 2 wasn't even a revolutionary improvement, but more of an expected evolutionary change that wasn't too different from the rumors since months back, so this "surprise" from Samsung or whatever one should call it, is surprising to me. It's very unusual that companies make these sort of "ok we're failing" comments. It doesn't exactly help their stock value. Strange.

Yes, strange. That dude needs to go to the "learn to say nothing school"

What would have been wrong saying something like:

"It is a new market for us and we want to make the best possible product.
Our development although matured is still being fine tuned.
We have lots of ideas, but please understand we can't go into much detail know."

Compare

and a swimming pool is a giant bath tub. size is relevant.

or like saying that a netbook is just a tiny desktop. Everybody forgets to realize that it is running the same OS. Just like a netbook that runs Win7 or desktop than runs Win7 are the same thing. ;)

Uh oh:

Samsung exec: Our tablet is 'inadequate'
By Stan Schroeder, Mashable, BBC
March 4, 2011

In a refreshingly honest statement, Samsung's mobile division VP Lee Don-Joo admitted that the iPad 2 made some parts of Samsung's 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab look "inadequate," and the iPad 2's pricing might force Samsung to lower the price of its tablet.

"Apple made it very thin (...) We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate," Lee Don-Joo told Yonhap News Agency.

I hate to say this, I really do, but Apple is slowly loosing the tablet war. I love iOS dont get me wrong but Android has so many features that currently put it leagues ahead of iOS. The iPad is currently for people who do very simple tasks brows the web check email watch media, Android has become the operate system for people who are more teck savvy. But, and this is a big but, Android has no developer interest making it almost DOA and on top of that most Android devices have horrible build quality. The thing is that Android will steadily gain developer interest until its app base is much closer to that of iOS and thats when Apple will have officially lost OS wars. If Apple really wants to blow Android out of the water iOS 5 will have to show an extreme, I mean extreme increase in its feature set. I hate it I really really hate it because the iPad and all Apple products are AMAZING but it seams they have sold them selves short with iOS which pretty much cripples their amazing devices. Just my 2 cents! :)

What android features did you have in mind?

Actually, analysts are predicting just the opposite.
Apple will lose the market dominance to Android tablets in a couple of years.

So far analysts and pundits have demonstrated a very poor track record at predicting sales or public acceptance of iPad.

Apple has done such a good job marketing the iPad that the opinions of the press and reviewers have been rendered irrelevant. Sales are spectacular, and the the competitors is in disarray, returning to the drawing board even before they release their products.

The common theme I see in the negative reviews of iPad is to discuss all the features that iPad lacks, all the things it can't do. These reviews are accurate, but the reviewers completely miss the point of what makes the iPad great.

Great designs usually don't embody the best of everything, but rather find the right balance. SJ clearly articulated what iPad was at it's public debut: a device for browsing, e-mail, music, video, and reading. Rather than make a device that could be all things to all people, they made a device that could do the most common tasks really well. The public is showing that there is a place for a device like this.

Well we all know that a better notification system would be nice for sure, but the one thing I really like about android is the homescreen app integration. The ability to check your facebook the weather your email and text messages and play your music all without ever leaving the homescreen of your device is very cool. But on top of those 2 major upgrades I would like to see minor tools added to everything like options to change gamma and white balance while using your camera or a better way to start and stop your music while'st in an app. One more thing that we'll probably never see but I would really like is some sort of file integration for iPad, it would be nice to be working on a keynote document and then be able to save it to a folder on your homescreen and then be able to send it via email or send it to your computer or other iOS devices with airplay. But over all the operating system feels to contained to limited, I would like Apple to give the user more options make the device feel more you and less of what Apple wants it to look like. Thats what is amazing about computers in general is that everything you want to do or change is all there, you can have windows here windows there or files here and files there its what makes the experience personal and intuitive and its time for mobile devices to feel that way to!

I don't understand why the consensus is that the tablet market will mirror the smartphone market. The tablet market is much different in distribution so Android tablets can't use carriers to push their tablet as most tablets will not be sold through carriers.

Android tablets also don't get the luxury of lower pricing; no one can seem to compete with Apple here right now. Plus the iPad has the advantage of brand and design while Android tablets are more expensive and arguably uglier.

If the rumours of the iPad 3 in September with the retina display come true I fear that Android tablets will have very little visible advantage to the consumer.

YEah people who think that the marketplace for tablets will play out like smartphones are mistaken. Apple has a dominating position and will continue to do so. There are no artificial barriers to getting an iPad like not being available on specific carriers.

Right now Apple has the best product for the best price, they are not going to be overtaken by Android just because a lot of hardware companies are trying to chase them down. In fact that issue is actually going to hurt them as they all fight each other for the android market share and pose no direct threat to Apple any time soon.

The android marketplace has no protected foothold to grow like they did with Verizon. Anyone who wants to buy an Android tablet will also have the option to buy a cheaper and better iPad.

By the way Cole, why do you want to do everything on the homescreen.. Kind of defeats the whole point if you literally do everything on the homescreen.

I don't disagree with you, but the problem is that as long as it's just an entertainment device, it won't be useful as a real computer.
To make it attractive to people that need a bit more, it needs to have enough power to run a decent set of real apps (I don't expect it to run FCP, but at least it should handle iwork and ilife apps capably), offer some sort of manageable file system and have better connectivity (lightpeak would be perfect for it), and make it easy to get 3g or 4g around the world.
You know that the other tablet makers will offer this (the xoom already has some of this), and the ipad will lose its appeal for new buyers.
Since tablets haven't yet penetrated the market in any way (99.7% of people do not own any tablet yet) the potential market is huge for whoever offers a tablet that has the benefits of touch technology and the benefits of a functional computer.

Yeah why would a company that creates mobile devices want to focus on software thats just plain stupid! Yeah baby steps worked well when their only competition was palm pilots and blackberries but things are different now there competition is increasing on a daily basis I'm sorry but its time for them to step it up a notch and hiring one developer isn't going to cut it!

I keep hearing this since i started using Mac in 2006. They know their game and they know how do their job. It's only good that Apple is not rushing to do things like it's the end of the world. That's the reason why android will never be as user friendly as iOS, because they just slap a feature from geek perspective and think that it's ok. Sure looks good on paper.

The whole point is to be useful.

It's very handy to have a lot of info available at a glance, and also be able to interact with it.

It's similar to an automobile dashboard. The best ones have the commonly used instruments and controls directly available.

It'd be a real pain to close the speedometer in order to open the gas gauge, then close that to change the radio station, then have to open the speedometer again. That's what a static homescreen feels like.

I agree with you on the notification system, but home screen and other "options" seem to be a matter of philosophy. You say options make you feel like you are using a computer, but I believe the design of the iDevices is based on having as little "computer" as there is between you and the apps you need to run and the things you need to do.

Personally I can't understanding why people envy many of the half-baked "features" that get thrown on Android, which seem to me to be little more than obvious attempt ons Google's part to make the OS seem more "advanced" to gadget nerds. Soon you will hear people complaining there isn't a Start bar on the iPad. ;)

Luckily you don't have to keep your eye on the road when using an iOS or other portable device.

Maybe I'm not making myself clear I agree with you 100% android is completely half baked, but it has a lot of features that I woud like to see Apple implement better in iOS and I know they can! Thats whats frustrates me that theirs all these features that Apple could implement so much better than Android and its just taking such a long time for them to do it. I'm not saying that Apple has to rush anything but It would be nice to know they are at least working on it! Its been almost year since the last noticeable iOS update.

Your probably right, hey I'm no software designer! All I know is that I would like a little more in iOS and I trust Apple to make the right decisions when it comes to iOS 5.

So then you obviously can tell us how many have been sold?

As someone familiar with engineering, you obviously know the difference between engineering samples and shipping in volume. This is pretty standard terminology and not in any way related to iPad volumes (people here are trying to say that XOOM is not shipping in iPad-like volume, which is absolutely irrelevant). So, obviously XOOM has been shipping in volume for a few weeks now and dual core DELL Streak 7 has been shipping in volume since January. Apple is just two monts late which by Apple standards is not too bad ;)

Actually, analysts are predicting just the opposite.

Yes. I predict this as well. Other tablet manufacturers will take huge chunks of the tablet market... the chunks that aren't very profitable. Apple will just work on, and likely succeed at, keeping the smaller but far more profitable portions of the tablet (and smartphone) market.

And paid app developers will flock to the platform that has customers who have proven they have more money to spend.

The android marketplace has no protected foothold to grow like they did with Verizon. Anyone who wants to buy an Android tablet will also have the option to buy a cheaper and better iPad.

Please everyone stop saying how the iPad 2 is significantly cheaper than the Xoom. IT"S NOT! The COMPARABLE iPad is the 3G, 32GB model that sells for $729 vs $799 for the Xoom. For that extra $70 you get a free 4G update, another 512 GB of RAM, a microSD slot for infinite expansion, a USB port and HDMI port, better camera quality and support for Flash. That's worth $70 to me certainly, or probably to anyone. Heck, you'd have to pay $40 for the HDMI adapter alone for the iPad 2.

You can say that the iPad 2 is better as an OPINION, but it's certaionly not CHEAPER, all things considered. Steve Jobs bends the truth once again.

Tony
