They better rethink that. Samsung did.

Rethink offering better specs at a cheaper price point than iPad ? I don't get your point...

Samsung's pricing was rumored to be way more than the Xoom. Now we will never find out. The Xoom is already aggressively priced compared to the iPad.

That's the 32 GB 3G model with a SD slot for 32 GB expansion (in other words, the equivalent to a 64 GB iPad 3G).

The Wifi version is cheaper than the iPad. At least get your facts straight.

Really? There's one picture (unconfirmed by the way:)) and all of the sudden it's fact but when there's an article with quoted sources it's MacRumors that's lying.

Huh? It's not the equivalent. It's 32 GB, that is the hardware you are paying for.

If you installed a 32 GB card (at your own additional expense) it would cost a minimum of about $50 (available on New Egg) making the minimum cost for a 64 GB capable Samsung at $850. The iPad, with built-in 64 GB and 3G is $829. Still cheaper. You're the one that distorts facts. I guess an aftermarket external battery should be included in the capabilities as well? The list would be long if you include add-on "potential" as part of the paid capability when comparing price.

That's not what shipping in volume means though. It just means a manufacturer is not doing limited runs. You can be "shipping in volume" and only sending out 1000 units.

So either Steve completely redefined an accepted industry phrase like "shipping in volume" or he told a fib. Neither makes it right.

Why do you feel the need to defend what Steve said ? He's a big kid, he can do it himself.

Sorry, no. A consumer-targeted device which is shipping in quantities of 1000 is *not* "shipping in volume". That's squarely in the "limited quantities" category. Even the ultra-high-end 63" 3D TV set I saw the other day at HHGreg is shipping in higher volumes than that, and the manufacturer (Samsung IIRC, actually) knows that relatively few people will actually *buy* a TV that large. (Most simply don't have the room and/or budget for something that large.)

The estimates I've seen for the Xoom say Samsung expects to ship 700,000 - 800,000 units in the first month. They hope to have as many as a million *orders* at that point. The original iPad *sold* more than a million in its first month available, and that was while supplies were constrained (aka: not yet "shipping in volume").

Sure, you can argue about exactly where the threshold for "shipping in volume" falls, but at this point I don't think even Samsung would argue that the Xoom has hit that point yet.

So much for "back to the drawing board" :

Again, Macrumors twisting facts to get a bigger "pro-Apple" spin on a story.

Well, there's this little unknown called the Motorola Xoom that's barely been mentionned in about every post in this thread.

It's interesting to note, that the link you provided still does not give a timeframe for when the Galaxy Tab will be released: "A Samsung spokesman told the outlet the release plan for the Android-based Galaxy Tab 10.1 has not been affected, but declined to say when the device will ship."

Don't see how Macrumors have twisted any facts or put its own "spin" on this, when the company itself doesn't even have a release date for their product.

Do you even know that Dell Streak 7 (with a dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 chip) started shipping in January. Available since then on T-Mobile (in volume).

To be correct, Steve Jobs should have said: "First dual core tablet to ship in volume higher than iPad 1."

And do you know how many Streaks have shipped to justify your use of the word "volume"? I still don't understand why 1) people get aggravated by Apple because they make better products than pretty much every other player categorically, and/or 2) why, if you dislike Apple so much you waste your energy posting claims you can't substantiate on a forum wherein the majority of contributions are from consumers who like Apple products.

It's quite simple. Every other tablet will get discounted to irrelevance and eventually be canceled. And the reason is even simpler - they wait for Apple before they create something and by then it's far too late. Every other "MP3 player" is irrelevant because of this dynamic.

Oh and I will substantiate my claim about Apple making better products: they sell more, they make more money and their market cap dwarfs every other player. There's no reason other companies can't make better products. Well, no reason other than laziness and complacency.

If there were something better, people would buy it.

I see the logic in disliking a product for a reason, but if the reason is mostly due to the success of the product, well, it just seems pretty ignorant.

KnightWRX, how much money does Google, Samsung et al pay you to astroturf Android on here?

An Android tablet with 32GB of internal storage and an SD card slot that accepts 32GB SD cards is not equivalent to a 64GB iPad 2. Why?

First of all, you would have to buy a 32GB SD card separately unless if you had one lying around not in use in a camera. Second, a device that would rely on SD cards to augment storage would never be approved by corporate security in either healthcare (HIPPA) or any publicly traded company (SOX). One of the problems with SD cards is that there is no encryption or no enforcement of encryption of for any data stored or copied over to an SD card.

In the worst case, you expect someone to pay more for a 32GB Android tablet and then fork over more money for an SD card?

SD cards are not an advantage but rather a disadvantage especially for corporate adoption and rollout.

I can use an SD card with my camera connection kit for one purpose, getting photos onto the device. The limitations on functionality means that most end users get all the functionality they need (accessing photos) while having one version of the that can work for both home and corporate users. Corporate users would need to have a locked down version of android before it would be safe to use in a business environment.

So the iPad2 is going to be shipped in the US the 11th, and in other 26 countries by the end of the month. I'm not aware of what other tablets are on the market just yet, and I found the only dual core tablet that is on the market at the moment is the Dell Streak 7, which I guess is out in the US and UK but I can't check what other countries have been included.

There are many many many dual core tablets on the market other than the Dell Streak. Many of them with a sub $199 price point. I did a search on amazon.co.uk and I found 4 such devices. Dual core. Shipping. And amazon.co.uk says they are "in stock" so I guess that means that they have them.

Yes, they are crappy little slates that someone with expensive tastes and with an over emphasis on the importance of image would never own. Having said that, they are on the market, and significantly cheaper than iPad.

Because you and Steve Jobs are not aware of the existence of these devices, doesn't mean that they don't exist.

Steve should have said "And we think that when we start shipping the iPad 2 in a couple of weeks, we will blow away all the other dual core tablets out there. Because the iPad 2 is just gorgeous, amazing, and really really nice."

Wow, when you put it like that, just $21 extra for the XOOM. When you consider the higher resolution screen, higher quality camera at 8MP with flash, at least double the ram, and the path to 4G, seems like a lot of extra value for $21. You've got me thinking. The other thing is that you could always wait and get the extra SD card upgrade when you need it, after the 32Gb starts to fill. That way, the SD Card will probably be down to $20 by then with current trends, so we'd be looking at a XOOM for $10 less than the iPad 2, but of course that's speculative.

Steve should have said "And we think that when we start shipping the iPad 2 in a couple of weeks, we will blow away all the other dual core tablets out there."

Steve says a lot of things that are "untrue"

Big deal.

None of us here typed out his Keynote slides... and we also weren't running his teleprompter...

So...whaddya gonna do?

I think the biggest crime is that the Xoom only supports MicroSD cards.

Would it have killed them to put in a regular SD card slot? You know... the cards that most digital cameras use?

At least Apple will sell you the Camera Connection Kit that will accept regular SD cards... and the USB dongle will also accept a card reader for CF cards.

But the rest of the tablet manufacturers are really missing the boat. Tablets would be great devices to view photos and/or dump memory cards.

Here in Canada, they ship on the 17th of march, before the iPad 2.

You're just not following them like you follow Apple.

US, UK and Canada are 3 countries, we have to match 27 to be au pair with Jobs idea of shipping in volume. If there isn't any dual core tablet shipping in these many countries by the end of March, than Jobs has a point and you cannot argue much about it.

It's true probably I know better about Apple because I'm a follower; however when I try to retrieve informations about other product other than Apple's I still can't figure out where to look, and I blame those company for poor marketing. Announcing product ahead of the time, announcing price, changing price, changing release date, not shipping the product anymore. But you know, it's probably me that I not good to look in the right place, so if you want you can help find out if there is any other dual tablet that is shipping in as many country as Apple is doing with the iPad2.

I am not biased towards any company but Apple do make the tech side simply and fun to use. My wife loves her iPad. I think Steve Jobs was feeling that Apple's airspace is being encroached by the competition.

That's fine by me as it means Apple will have to continue to make sleeker and better products along with the eco system.

Google are the closest to providing the full eco system to Apple, and if one year a better all rounder comes from a company other than Apple, then thats good for us consumers.

Apart from Google I actually think HP with webOS might show some sting too.

Have you read or seen any reviews for the Xoom btw? They're very funny(unless you work for Motorola).
If even so called 'fan-froids' are saying how bad it is, you know the product must be pretty awful, so I think if I were you I'd save myself that $21, and buy something that will work so much better and that product of course is the iPad2.....

No, actually, skip that, pay the $800, buy the Xoom, and be stuck with an incredibly buggy, heavy, thrown together device with its 16 available apps..and every time it crashes on you remember how much you hated on Apple.
This will help keep the flames of your bitterness burning.

You know, of course, that micro sd cards all come with a regular sd adapter so that they can easily fit sd card slots.
Would it have killed apple to put in any sort of sd card slot on their gadget?
Or do they prefer nickle and diming us to death with their extra options?
When I bought my 2007 mbp, it came with a remote control included, but apple decided to screw its customers and did away with that.
Now, they could have offered the cable that jobs touted in his presentation as part of the ipad package, but they are too cheap to include a basic cable with their equipment.

.....and every time it crashes on you remember how much you hated on Apple.

What??? I have an iPhone, a MacBook, a couple of G4 systems, and several other Apple products. But I also have other stuff by other manufacturers and shop around and consider options. If that makes me a hater, burning in flames of bitterness, then wow!!

KnightWRX, how much money does Google, Samsung et al pay you to astroturf Android on here?

Apple pays me more to astroturf the Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, Mac Mini and Mac Pro. Google et al are pretty darn cheap. ;)

Check my post history again before you make such insulting assumptions about me.

Big deal.

Exactly what baffles me about why so many people feel the need to defend and rewrite his quote in order to make it fit reality.

You are right. The CEO of a large company saying "a lot of things that are 'untrue'" isn't a big deal, it's par for the course. However, I don't agree with you that there is nothing that we can do:

By pointing out lies/errors/mistakes as often happens on forums like this, it helps people to see the truth so they can make a decisions based on truth.

There really is no point in comparisons to the Samsung 10.1 until the Galaxy is actually committed to a release date. Who knows, it may be more appropriate to compare it to the iPad 3 by the time they ship the product.
