Another win for Samsung (and ultimately Android) while Apple is doing what exactly? Raising prices on crippled devices they won't share sales figures on? LOL
Yeah, HUGE win. Huge, thick, awkward win.

This prototype is being rushed to market due to Samsung’s massive insecurity and lack of corporate discipline, and won’t truly be a compelling or profitable product for years. But that won’t stop thousands and thousands of people from buying it.

And when Apple finally copies Samsung in 10 years, I wonder if the narrative will be 'We invented this' like they said about multi-touch?

I am 100% certain that Apple has DOZENS of foldable prototypes that have been in development for years, but their modus operandi is generally to not share anything until it’s totally ready for prime time. The only reason they aren’t announcing any such device now, or in the near future, is that it’s painfully obvious that the technology simply does not exist to make a compelling consumer device at this point in time.
I really dont believe this. I think apple is fully capable and has prototypes of fully functional devices we haven't ever seen. I think apple uses strategy to increase their revenue.
Why release something if they are still milking people out of small upgrades. When they have to drop something big they will to keep their revenue coming in and always increasing.
Why release something if nobody else has it? I think products are released just based on this honesty. Apple wont release something that will hurt their sales for other devices also they will wait till they need to do something more substantial to keep sales coming in.

Too late their already copied AMOLED, Qi, notch, pencil, dual cameras, etc. Another poster has already mentioned this.
Although I agree - to an extent.

Everyone has incorporated an iteration those technologies.
- Qi is a natural progression
- Notch (i believe Apple was the first mainstream company to do this? hence all the companies laughing at Apple?)
- dual cameras - natural progression
- AMOLED - I think apple uses OLED

I hope they don't copy the foldable screen - although probably evolutionary.. i just hope it doesnt happen haha

why do you think it's thick? you know the video of this foldable phone has a cover on it to hide its real shape and thickness right? He goes over that in the keynote.

why do you hope it doesnt happen? thats like saying I hope I dont get new innovation because I as one person think its not worth anything.

It's time to deliver, that was Samsung's tagline. And what exactly did they deliver? A device that looked like a box which seems to be foldable. Seen that before. I'm not at all impressed, it's more CGI together with some theatrical sounding orchestra playing in the background in this commercial and some people stating that this is all revolutionary.

I'll be impressed when I actually do see a working device of an ultra-lightweight smartphone that's actually foldable and works.

Riiight.

And Apple is having a hard time just making a damn charging mat.

Samsung is being truly innovative and that phone design is intriguing.

I love Apple and its products but Samsung sure does make me stop and think.

Well he clearly says they have disguised it. So it’s no doubt slim but housed in a thick enclosure for now to keep some secrets.

The screen doesn’t fold flat so requires an amount of girth to house the bend when folded. This ain’t gonna be a thin phone.

did you watch the keynote about the display technology? I don't see how this will be over 10mm thick.

This is innovation that far exceeds the notch. Apple will adopt this in 2022-24 when Samsung minimized all the risks and people embrace the phone/tablet feature/function.

MR forum members will hate on this until Apple introduces something similar 4-6 years from now, and claim innovation

Phone/Tablet combination is rather appealing, couple that with USB-C and this can dock to accessories. One device to rule the business persons carry-on technology. Apple users will be carrying around their iPhone, iPad and/or MB/A/P with them.

You mustn’t know MR forum members well. Most of them seem to hate Apple. And I have no idea why they’re here...

They need the space to bend it internally so where does the battery, internals and space for the external screen go? This is no TARDIS. Probably be wedge shaped.

Very salty thread this, much like after the Pixel 3 vs iPhone XS low light comparison where people here were absolutely up in arms, so quick to claim foul.

They were wrong.

Having now personally used Google's Night Sight (Beta version) it is amazing and makes the comparison look completely genuine. Embarrassing for many, that.

People really need to step out of the RDF and realise that there are other companies capable of producing desirable products. How about waiting for the main unveil, rather than slagging off previews. Just a thought.

watch the video. 40% reduction in screen technology.

Yea I really dont get the hatred for innovation. Some could call me an apple fanboy ive always liked their stuff ive had each iPhone back to the 3g. White plastic MacBook, two MacBook Pros, two appletv's, 3 different apple watches, 3 different iPads and still I like to see new technology no matter who it is.
Seems like people are ok with small updates since 2015 and new technology they think is pointless and dumb. Without other companies innovating apple wont be pushed to release anything besides small updates year after year. I think its good for all to want new technology no matter who is releasing it because it will push the market to new things.
I never understood the super fanboy apple people that cant be open minded to new tech...

Sniff sniff, is it jealousy I smell. Let’s be honest here, Apple will go to Samsung for this tech in 4-6 years.

You do realize that Apple has been awarded plenty of patents for the same concept. Apple will likely not be the first because they understand that launching fast doesn’t mean anything if it’s half baked. Apparently other companies seem to be stuck with the hold concept of “being first to market” for the sake of being first to market.

From 2012. Many prototypes exist. Samsung have made a prototype, nothing more, like many manufacturers before them. NEC/Plastic Logic in particular. And in fact I was talking about flexible screens used in other tech. The technology is not new, not solely developed and owned by samsung.

I will not be throwing my money at Apple in any fashion. I’m their biggest critic.

Ah I see so all you can provide links for is a Samsung prototype, and a prototype from some company nobody’s ever heard off from a story posted this month....

Yeah as I thought you were talking utter fud! Despite ‘you’re’ claims that we have had foldable screens for years and years, including car windscreens, you cannot provide a shred of evidence showing any of it came to market. When Samsung brings theirs to market next year you’ll find something else to bring them down with because, we’ll nust because they aren’t Apple and are Samsung right?
Or perhaps Damaung will do an Airpad... announce it and then never launch it because they can’t make it work, hmm well Samsung have at least shown a working prototype.

It's a pretty decent proof of concept, but little more than that. If it were ready for production, they would not have hidden the design elements. I suspect the tech isn't quite there yet, and they felt pressured into showing off and attempting to give the impression they're narrowing the tech gap to Apple. (Having said that, who knows, Apple might have pursued a similar line of research but simply haven't unveiled their efforts yet?)

Samsung did said it is launching in the coming months. Of course, the actual phone cannot be shown now

Hmm...that’s not what I read on the Verge. I read that the display panel will be ready. Putting it into a workable product is another thing. And if Samsung had a device ready to go into production they wouldn’t be showing off a prototype onstage, they’d be showing off the real thing.
[doublepost=1541641907][/doublepost]
Hyperbole much? Do you work for Samsung?
[doublepost=1541641996][/doublepost]
If they had a product ready for production they’d be showing it off on stage not a prototype shown in the dark.

Just watched it again and yeah, they were talking about the display as opposed to the entire device. Still they claim mass production in the coming months.
