My bad. I was thinking of Taiwan.....
Samsung are a Korean (south) company. They are not Chinese or Taiwanese.

Honestly, these Apple diehards truly believe Apple developed the displays in their iPhones. Just look at the comments in this thread. How can anyone possibly have anything negative to say about new tech like folding displays?
Because it’s not Apple. Of course when Apple do it in 5 years we will hear that it’s revolutionary and we will hear that Samsung rushed this out to beat Apple.

How did Apple make AMOLED panels better? I'll give you a little help here... they didn't.
Samsung AMOLED panels have been the best in the industry for years. They set the benchmark by which all others hope to achieve.
Exactly. Every high quality OLED panel on a smartphone is made by Samsung. They are the kings of display technology.

However let’s not let reality get in the way of a good story. OLED was so terrible until Apple charged in on their white horses and saved the day. If Samsung or anyone else happen to have a half decent display in their latest phones it’s because they copied Apple.

Cool, didn't know you'd actually seen the release product... Can you creep round the NDA and share some pics?

My guess is you some how must think the actual released product will differ greatly from what was actually seen. Samsung has shown off a few prototypes, all of which look different from each other. This one being the most recent I'm sure this one will be must to what will actually be produced. Which if you can't tell from the video is quite thick, ugly, and resembles a TV remote for a fat back television.

Why would it look the same when we were told that it was being disguised and that it looks a much more beautiful, during the event?

That’s not what it looks like. They were quite clear about that during the event when it was showed off. It was hidden.

The one in the case (to hide the actual device). In a dark room.. That one?

My guess is you didn't see what you thought you saw.

Sure, folding has benefits, and is the likely future of smartphones, but are the benefits worth the compromises with current technology? The industry abandoned folding even when the hinge was between keys and a screen: the blackberrys and palm treos were preferred over flip phones.

Does anyone doubt that Apple has been working on similar ideas for at least as long as Samsung? The difference is that Apple would not release a fat and ugly phone (with other inevitable compromises in battery life and reliability) just to be first. Apple will be late to this party, as they were to the music player party, and then the smartphone party, but I'm hoping they arrive with the best costume by far, as they've done before.

The difference is Apple needs to sell you an iPhone, iPad and Mac. They're not dumb enough yet to crucify the iPad until they've turned Mac's into iOS devices.

Yup, typical Apple move, 2-3 years down the line, swoop in when the tech matures (by Samsung/ others) by claiming Apple Innovated. Ofcourse, it will be the thinnest product ever, but, that is also innovation, with the same clunky non-customized UX from 2000.

Well yes, wait until the tech is ready and build on it. There is no reason to rush something first to the market. Taking an existing product or idea and making it better is still innovation, which is what Apple excels in. See the description from the dictionary below for reference.

"Innovation, for its part, can refer to something new or to a change made to an existing product, idea, or field. One might say that the first telephone was an invention, the first cellular telephone either an invention or an innovation, and the first smartphone an innovation."

Well he clearly says they have disguised it. So it’s no doubt slim but housed in a thick enclosure for now to keep some secrets.
They used lighting in the video and on the stage to try to downplay the impact of how massive it was. You bought the disguise story?

How is that a difference? Samsung has tablets and laptops too.

This isn’t what it looks like. Apple don’t make their own displays. Do you think Samsung have been working on this for Apple too?

Having the idea to make folding smartphones is not innovative; it's obvious. Innovation is needed to build the thing without unacceptable compromises in size, weight, battery life, and reliability.

Samsung demonstrated their grasp of the obvious, but they have not yet demonstrated the necessary innovation to benefit from it. That part was blacked out.

Apple brought multitouch to the masses without making their own displays. And Apple didn't always make their own processors either; now they make some pretty good ones.

This is innovation that far exceeds the notch. Apple will adopt this in 2022-24 when Samsung minimized all the risks and people embrace the phone/tablet feature/function.

MR forum members will hate on this until Apple introduces something similar 4-6 years from now, and claim innovation

"With material so thin and so flexible, it can fold down from the size of <whatever the XS max size is now called> to the size of your Apple Watch screen...in a glance...with a thought."

Tim takes iPhone, looks at it, thinks about folding it and as he does, the screen folds up automatically as he places it on his wrist. The crowd goes wild.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce the first hybrid iPhone and Apple Watch!"

I'd say that's pretty innovative. :D

Those Apple products still sell relatively well. Samsung isn't a major player when it comes to tablets or laptops, so it doesn't really matter much to them if they cannibalize their own products. Apple has shown to do this as well, but it has to be worth it and provide compelling value (iPod cannibalized by iPhone). I don't think we are anywhere close to compelling value when it comes to a folding phone/tablet.

Q: How do you know when Samsung is doing something right?

A: You look at the bitter responses from the Apple diehards. Lol

Good grief, get over your bitterness and jealousy already. Just thank your lucky stars that Samsung exists to move the whole industry forward with real innovation. Innovation that even your beloved Apple benefits from. The iPhone as you know it, would not be possible without Samsung innovation. So just sit back, and stare in awe of the genius that is Samsung.

Fridges, Ovens, TV's etc... I don't think Samsung is as worried about merging two product lines into one.
Apple introduced iPhone without fear of killing the iPod. I seriously doubt they would delay a folding phone (now at 60% of their revenue) to protect the iPad (7% of revenue), and it's clearly no more a threat to Macs than tablets are, and tablets already exist.

This, Apple’s folding/stretching/rolling patents go as far back as Samsung’s. But the only thing people care about is that one company releases the tech (whether or not there is an actual UX designed for it) first. I don’t care about first, I care about features implemented because there’s an actual compelling use case for it.

I think Samsung’s tech is cool, but there is no way in hell I’d ever consider a form factor using those aspect ratios.

I love the idea… they made a point to lower the lights so all we see is the screen and not the ginormously thick body and bezels. I understand they don't want to reveal the design… but why now? Love the idea, and once the tech can get even better… Apple will create something that is designed better.
I just hope that if Apple chooses to create their own foldable device, they do it with a specific purpose in mind. Unlike Samsung that only seems to cater to form before function. Google Glass is another prime example of this.

So just sit back, and stare in awe of the genius that is Samsung.
I'd settle for just being buzzed by the way tech is moving and how this could soon be the next thing that finally pushes Apple to, I dunno, think different again..

I don't think anyone is jealous, it just isn't an actual or compelling product yet. I give them credit for developing the screen tech and being the first to introduce it (or second), but I would need to see the full package before I think there is value there. The hardware needs to be right, from build quality, battery, and power perspective, and the software needs to be right as I am sure it can be clunky in areas and tough to get right, will it have proper app support, etc. If Samsung is able to pull it all off in the first try, of course we'll give them their due, but we need to see that first. Right now, it's just a bendable screen and a hinge. I think most comments from the Apple end have been realistic.

Lol, that’s not what they said AT ALL.
Nice try though...

IIRC, he said “of course I’ll get in trouble if I show you too much, so I’m going to leave it here”... a far cry from “this is being disguised... it’s actually MUCH more beautiful!”, lol.

The bitterness doesn't even make any sense. Display innovation cannot be compared because Samsung makes displays and Apple doesn't.

In fact since Samsung makes many of Apple's displays, we should hope and want Samsung to push forward on display technology since those improvements will make it to Apple devices.

Lol, no I knew you were wrong!
I was being a bit facetious. I believe the Note series sells at at a roughly $100 premium over other Android flagships... CLEARLY not 5x the price, so obviously the Toyota/Ferrari analogy doesn’t work well.
It does because the point is that a Ferrari is clearly better than a Toyota but people still buy the Toyota... for obvious reasons. It was my answer to the guy who said the Note still sells less than other phone, I'm assuming he was talking about the iPhone as always... a product being better than other doesn't mean that's going to sell better than a worse product. Take the XR for example, it's worse than the XS and it's selling better than it.
