Also. We are all used to glass displays. I’m not keen on going to plastic again, even if it does fold. Rather stick with my phone and tablet.

If people want = product is innovative? Really? WOW

I do not need ipad, so, ipad is not innovative with that logic.
Do check the context of that comment. It was not intended to be a general statement.

Just that the idea of a folding screen is obvious, and has been possible for some time. Putting it in a phone that people want is where innovation is needed.

I've elaborated above.

Samsung makes the technology for testing, and Apple perfects it. Thats how its always been. Apple makes the things that the average person wants to use, and Samsung, Microsoft, etc make the ideas. Apple just makes them user friendly.

You know, Lv05, I think there is a lot of truth to what you wrote above. To put it another way, Samsung creates a solution in search of a problem and Apple finds the problem to solve. But in the end both companies end up making a lot of money for their shareholders.

I'm quite happy with both my Samsung and Apple products. Although I still wish Samsung would update their software on a more consistent basis. I would be happy with bi-monthly security patches Android version updates within six months of release from Google.

I think Microsoft realized that they would never be a hardware vendor and decided to use Surface as proof of concept for how they viewed Windows should be used. If you look at their O.E.M.'s products you can see that they usually adopt the Surface features within six months to a year of Microsoft using them in Surface and they are usually better and cheaper.

There's nothing wrong with the surface line of products, but they are definitely bleeding edge technology that needs refinement for mainstream use.

Just my US$0.02.

I don’t think innovation is really about whether people want it or not. It’s about driving something forward and doing things that wasn’t previously possible.

We have to wait and see what they actually deliver when it comes out.

I said the S9 plus and the note 9 were tested better than the X, not the max.

Samsung can’t dethrone the iPhone as much as they want to and this isn’t the product to do it with.

Agreed. I think that ship has sailed personally. I’m just noot a fan of converging devices. It ends up being lackluster on both ends, just look at the Surface computers. If Samsung can put it all together and it’s great in terms of all of the aspects I mentioned, I’ll applaud them. I just don’t see it though.

What's your point? Apple introduced iPhone in spite of its effect on iPod sales. It is not plausible they would delay an improvement to iPhone to protect iPads. Particularly when the Pro iPads are 11" and 13", which would require 2 folds to fit in your pocket.

Same way Apple wont do a 2 in 1.. $$$$$$
They could do it and do it better than anyone else.. They're are a gnats chaff away from having iOS and MacOS merging but why do that when you can sell a user an iPad and Mac for triple the cost.

Nobody was going to keep an iPhone and iPod in each pocket. Lots of peeps keep an iPhone in their pocket an iPad in their bag snuggled up next to the MacBook and an iMac on the desk at home.

Gee, it’s almost like you were baiting with your earlier post so you could white knight for larger people.

I generally don’t find larger people attractive, what a monster I must be.

Try to stay on topic here. The discussion is about Samsung’s new foldable phone/tablet. You should try Twitter if you want to push your own world beliefs/agendas on to others.

Haha... makes me wonder what that poster writes on- since paper is thin & they clearly have a problem with things that are designed to be thin, actually being thin!

Apple hs a number of patents relating to folding devices. As a result, they may have some prototypes in the labs and importantly, they might be very well aware of the technology needed to make this work day after day after day...
Yep! Apple typically doesn't announce things until its ready to ship...maybe they will preview it next year, doubtful, though.

Another great category that sets apart innovation just like the Samsung Note series.
What innovation does the note 9 have??? To me. It’s EXACTLY a S9 plus with a stylus. Hardware, software, cameras, etc.

Sniff sniff, is it jealousy I smell. Let’s be honest here, Apple will go to Samsung for this tech in 4-6 years.
Jealous of what? An inferior operating system, sub par processors. Sub par camera tech.

I like the idea, but to me it’s useless. I have a phone to be a phone, and a tablet to be a
tablet. I see lots of potential breaking issues.

With all your Samsung praise on this article you sound like one of their paid marketing employees.

It's just amazing how many people have commented on how thick the device on stage was, yet purposely or ignorantly ignore the presenter clearly stated, the actual device was being masked by a case. Smh.

Now this is real innovation. Not ready for prime time yet but will get there. Also, it maybe the only way to get a smaller phone.

Conversely, Apple innovates by waiting 4 years to update the internals on the mac mini, with no change to design and by putting in a weak Intel graphics. And everyone cheers.

In the presentation they said the screen will start full production in a few months.

They were trying to mask the design, not the thickness of the device. The enclosure could be adding some thickness but they didn't put it in something vastly larger than the body of the phone.

That’s not what it looks like. It was disguised inside a case.

That's correct. It was in a case.

But did you notice how the outside screen was flush with the case when closed... and how the inside screen was also flush with the case when opened?

It looks like we are seeing the thickness of the device.

Yes... they disguised the edges in a case.

But they didn't hide the thickness.

I'm sure it will have smooth tapered edges instead of the square blocky shape we saw on stage.

But I think it'll be a thick lumpy device in your pocket. It has to be. There are still components inside the device. Batteries, USB port, speakers, cameras, microphones, etc. And the fact that it folds means it will be twice as thick when closed.

They can't escape physics. :p

They did address reliability. They said you could fold it over and over and it wouldn’t break. They will address all those things when they announce it properly next year.

Well that’s not strictly true because the note 9 and the S9 plus had a better screen than the X and I expect the S10 will have a better display than the Xs. I think most companies would rather design and manufactur their own products because it would keep costs down and they could be in control of the entire process.
From what I read, the X had a better display than the S9

Q: How do you know when Samsung is doing something right?

A: You look at the bitter responses from the Apple diehards. Lol

Good grief, get over your bitterness and jealousy already. Just thank your lucky stars that Samsung exists to move the whole industry forward with real innovation. Innovation that even your beloved Apple benefits from. The iPhone as you know it, would not be possible without Samsung innovation. So just sit back, and stare in awe of the genius that is Samsung.
I know. Samsung is just so amazing. Subpar processors in new phones. Subpar laggy OS. Poor battery life, even though they come with huge batteries. Subpar camera tech. You really need to stop acting like Samsung invented the whole smartphone industry and everyone’s success is because of Samsung.

Only thing Samsung is good at it screen tech. Other than that. Nothing they do is innovative or something to write home about.

Apple makes iPhones and iPads, so there is no need for a “dual use tablet/phone”.

I don’t see any bitterness or jealousy. Us Apple owners know what we have and like, because it works well for us. It’s consistent.

Samsung wasn’t the first to make a foldable phone. Other companies have done it too.

It's interesting, but it's not on sale.

Both screens look small for their particular purpose. I will be very impressed if Samsung have found a way to fold the device in half and not double whatever thickness it has.
I can't tell you how many times I've read here people wanted Apple to come out with a new IPhone se with 4.5 inch screen. 4.6 inch screen might be too big for se fans huh.

Seems like technology in need of a need. Maybe more useful if they someday figure out how to get the bend radius smaller.

Where is AirPower? yeah I though so, get real.

Does Apple hype AirPower every year? Has Apple been hyping AirPower for over a decade?

See, there's a difference between a company failing to get a product out by deadline and a company hyping a product/technology every year without ever having produced a practical application of it for consumers.

Did you really need that explained or are you just looking to get people riled up?

Yep! Apple typically doesn't announce things until its ready to ship...maybe they will preview it next year, doubtful, though.

Lol.
Well they didn’t in the past but the AirPods, HomePod and AirPower were all shown off quite a while before they were ready to ship.

This makes no sense. How do you know they aren’t masking the thickness?
What Happens when you put a cover on a phone. It suddenly gets thicker so yea masking the design with a cover will add thickness.
