Makes sense as the main screen, the one that matters, is inside. The small one is only there for quick interactions, like quick responses to messages, caller ID, selfies, etc.

Lol....... ok.

So, if you had both a tablet & a phone with you- you’d use the tablet almost exclusively? The phone would never be used for GPS? You’d do the majority of your texting on the tablet?
I’m glad that “makes sense” to you.
Personally, were I even to use it that way (at that point... why even bother having a 2nd screen? May as well open every time), I think I’d prefer even the secondary screen to NOT have such inordinately & ridiculously enormous top and bottom bezels.

I’m no troll. I was asked for proof and there it is. In black and white.
You're not a very good one, that's for sure. Implying that Samsung's foldable phone is a copied idea/design from an unknown Chinese Company that made a joke phone is a clear trolling attempt.
And nobody asked you anything.

Apple made software improvements for color management. The display itself is all Samsung.
Under a microscope, it is identical to the one used in the Note 9.
The funny thing is color calibration(more accurate sRGB) is better on the Note 9 in comparison to the Max.
What Apple did with their first OLED is invest more effort in color calibration than Samsung which gave them a slight edge in this area. Samsung did the same starting with the S9 and Apple's advantage was gone.

That's true.

So are you supposed to unfold the phone for anything that requires more than a quick glance? That will surely get annoying quickly.

Right now I can use my traditional slab phone for everything... without constantly opening and closing it. :p

The big concern is that the outside screen is 4.6" but with 21:9 aspect ratio. It's SKINNY. It's even narrower than an iPhone SE.

That would make the keyboard very narrow with very tiny keys.

But the alternative is to open it up into something TWICE the width of a Galaxy S9.

I understand the idea, though. You've got a screen on the outside for quick stuff... and then a bigger screen on the inside for everything else.

I'm just afraid that the "everything else" will end up being 95% of your daily use. You'll really be testing the durability of that bendy screen... open, close, open, close... :)

I wouldn't be surprised if the smaller screen gets bigger as the generations pass. At the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if opening to the bigger screen becomes the norm. Sort of how the Note line has made phablets the norm. In the beginning, everyone, including the tech community, absolutely ridiculed the size of the original Note. And now...

I never said I'd do most of my texting in tablet mode. Jeez, you need to calm down. Just to be clear, these devices are made to serve multiple user types. So let's see how this plays out before we decide on all the different ways to hate it. The industry (including consumers) need companies like Samsung. Companies like Samsung move the industry forward by pushing the bondaries of tech and innovation. Apple on the other hand, only pushes the bondaries of the price tag. It's a complete joke of a company. My money will always go to the company that sticks it's neck out and takes risks. Not the one that just sits on its lazy a$$ and waits for other companies to do all the heavy lifting. No thanks.

Where were they tested better? DisplayMate says the XS Max was the best display they tested, after the Note 9 was released.

Based on our extensive Lab Tests and Measurements the iPhone XS Max receives our DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award, earning DisplayMate's highest ever A+ grade by providing considerably better display performance than other competing smartphones.

No, most smart companies don’t want to manufacture their own components. That’s what almost killed Apple. Supply chain management and low capital expenditure are what keep Apple so profitable (the most valuable and profitable company in the world). The Apple strategy works.
Actually based on Displaymate's numbers Note 9 has a better display.
Note 9 wins in 11 categories while the iphone wins in 8.

https://imgur.com/a/5R0e6Xf

Also the last display to earn the A+ grade and Best Smartphone Display Award award is the Pixel 3 XL. So according to your logic it must also be better than Xs Max's display.

You really think that’s clever, don’t you?
I most certainly don't think thats clever. Being like that is just being a pratt full stop. I rather argue on the facts which is clearly true. Apple announced both products and they have yet to deliver. Same as Samsung has announced this product and has yet to deliver.
A real gotcha!
I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I can probably make an educated guess in which case I refer you to the above comment. I will make no attempt to stoop to your level of tone. It's just the way my mother brought me up i'm afraid.
Apple was extremely vague about the Mac Pro, and didn’t promise that we would see anything in 2018,
Never said they weren't. Just simply responding to someone saying the Samsung device was not going to be available, and I was comparing this to Apple.
so your Mac Pro comment is simple not a valid point.
I'd have to disagree. Apple made this announcement to try to appease its customers from going elsewhere. This is why most companies make announcements like this. Apple have yet to deliver this product. Its a shame that Apple cannot work on designing more that one or two devices at a time.
If you have been paying attention at all to what’s been going on with Apple lately, you would know that that announcement was made because they realized that they had made some design mistakes with the old Mac Pro, and wanted to reassure pro users that they were not being forgotten. It was a very rare moved buy them, but extremely welcomed. And, as promised, they have released a number of great pro products to satisfy 75% of what pro users needed in the meantime (iMac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mac mini pro).
I tend to look at Apple and how it helps my workflow. What I see are impediments, I don't want to have to carry around an SD card reader for importing video and photos on to my laptop.
I also don't want them to make me have to carry around multiple dongles because I only has one type of port.

I also don't want to require a crystal ball when deciding how much ram I am going to need for the next 3 years when I do regular updates to my pro software.
As far as the charging pad, it’s clear to anyone who reads this site that they have encountered an unforeseen heat problem, and they’re not releasing the product until they get it right. It’s a mistake. Even the best companies make them.
Correct, so why make the announcement in the first place.
Are you suggesting that this mistake is representative of Apple’s corporate philosophy on how to strategically introduce products, or that this is a one-off exception because of a technical issue?
Is that the only choices I am allowed?
Yeah, didn’t think do.
Please be civil if you want to continue any conversations with me. That tone helps no one.
[doublepost=1541749377][/doublepost]
Based on what? Those short answers with no essence are pointless, sorry. It doesn’t solve a problem at all. I kind of addressed your response indirectly a bit further down as well.
Are you saying you wouldn't want a foldable phone if it was done right and was about say 7mm thick?
The size of a phone and unfolded the size of a tablet?
From what I see on these forums that is what people want.
Half complain they want a smaller phone the other half laugh at them saying everyone wants a larger phone.
This would satisfy everyone.

We were talking versus the Samsung, not LG...but whatever. The XS Max tested better overall than the Note 9.
It actually didn't test better overall than the Note 9.
Also the 3 XL has a Samsung display.

As a conglomerate, I don’t think the head of Samsung’s mobile division can use that as an excuse for declining sales. Imagine telling your boss that you sold fewer phones, but it’s fine because another unrelated division sold more components to your greatest competitor. That’s good for him, but a disaster for you.
Yeah but ultimately Samsung Mobile is part of Samsung Electronics Group.
Samsung Mobile doing bad is a wake up call for the division but is is something Samsung Electronics can afford to swallow right now. Now imagine if apple reported a 13% decline in iphone sales, it would be a diaster.

Now imagine if apple reported a 13% decline in iphone sales, it would be a diaster.
Apple is expecting a decline in unit sales because they are not going to report on them any more.
I have read elsewhere that Apple phone sales are declining, not sure how accurate that is.

Another win for Samsung (and ultimately Android) while Apple is doing what exactly? Raising prices on crippled devices they won't share sales figures on? LOL
Crippled? New top Android devices can't even beat 1 year old iPhone 8 and X.
[doublepost=1541750983][/doublepost]
Now this is real innovation. Not ready for prime time yet but will get there. Also, it maybe the only way to get a smaller phone.

Conversely, Apple innovates by waiting 4 years to update the internals on the mac mini, with no change to design and by putting in a weak Intel graphics. And everyone cheers.
Why so many no sense comments? Why MR is full of this?
1) Offtopic
2) Mac mini is incredible machine finally with last gen Intel CPU
3) It has a 4 Thunberbolt 3 giving eGPU and disk upgrade like internal ones IF YOU NEED IT
4) SSD are crazy 3.4GB/s with on the fly encryption thanks to T2
5) Apple has the best support, the best OS, the best CPU, the best GPU and screen on mobile.

Comments like this and many others are not constructive, users attacking Apple because a "maybe" useful foldable iPhone in a prototype phone??? If Apple showed a thing like this would be a tons of hate comments how about useless, thick would be and go on.

Nope.
Here’s the slide of just the screen from later in their presentation.
By FAR the absolutely hugest top & bottom bezels we’ve ever seen on a mobile device so far.
It can have a bezel but it doesn’t mean it’s as thick as the case.

Interesting that you talk about monstrous bezels when it was only last year that Apple ditched their own massive bezels.

I think they meant crippled in terms of functionality.

The SD 845 is a capable chip. It can do what most people use their phones for with ease. The A12 is faster and so was the A11 but what exactly is all that power being used for. Nothing. There’s nothing I do on my max that I need the A12 for.

Give it a rest. Go spew your Apple hatred elsewhere. And insulting people to start your message does not help make your case. I'd respond with an actual counter-argument, if I thought you were someone actually worth discussing with.
Since your argument was false and failed you have now nothing else to say besides accusing me of insulting which I didn’t. In fact there’s nothing in my last quote which insulted or was meant to.

If you are going to make a baseless dig like that, at least realize or acknowledge that other companies are beating Samsung to market. They obviously aren't the only company "innovating" with that. I'd even guarantee Apple has a team playing around with something somewhere.

https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/...l-phone-folding-screen-beating-samsung-punch/
Of course that’s probably where Samsung and this Chinese company got the idea from in the first place. Copied Apple of course.

Seriously, what's with all the hate? It's a cool concept. It's early days tech that will be tweaked, improved, refined not just before this product comes to market but long after.

I've never owned a Samsung phone and have no intention to - but innovation like this is what is needed to stop the smartphone market stagnating.

I honestly can't even begin to comprehend how some people cannot look past an initial working prototype to see what could come in the future.

Really? Interesting. Please find the quote where Apple claims to have “invented” multi-touch, rather than simply being the innovators who made it practical on a tiny screen and the first to bring it to market. Please. Find these outrageous claims they’ve made and paste them below. I’m waiting...

I thought I remembered this “outrageous” claim by Apple, and specifically Steve Jobs.

people just cant appreciate technology from a competitor which is sad.
Sure we can have our favorites but if someone nobody knows comes out with something new groundbreaking why hate on it? New tech should be universally wanted really.

I know its really sad. You would think people would be happy that technology is moving forward but obviously not. This is the way all products come into existence. You have the earlier prototypes which eventually get refined into the polished product. However if the early prototypes were not made then the latter, working and useable product would never exist. This is how research and development works.

I'm in the same boat. Don't think I would by a Samsung phone but welcome any competition in the market which only benefits the consumer. Never really understood why fanbois get so upset defending a particular brand with so much emotion. Well actually I do a bit. If you look at how people can be brainwashed then you begin to understand.
I could watch a shopping channel for 10 minutes and think, hell yeah, I need one of those :)
I used to love watching the Apple keynotes and seeing what goodies were going to be in there for my next Apple device.
Apple is just going for the elite now. It's a shame that a company that makes such great products is trying to make the brand a luxury one. There is no need for them to increase the price of the phone by 62% over 6 years, especially since they know the dollar is so strong which has in effect more than doubled the price of devices for the rest of the world.
I guess we see what is happening now, Apple has cancelled increased production of the XR and I have read that the iPhone 8 is actually selling more than expected.

Sounds like for the first time ever you are applauding something Samsung has done.?

Apple has gone on a stage to sort of show part of a product they’re still working on? Which one?

The iPhone, for one example. Shown off six months before it was ready for sale. Still had a plastic screen. Still missing important apps. Barely worked for more than a few minutes without crashing.

Honestly this is something I just haven’t been behind ever since its conception years ago. It just looks awkward and uncomfortable. Unless they can somehow make it as thin as current phones, while folded... which doesn’t seem very likely any time soon. I certainly don’t want to carry around a brick.

True, for people who are used to abusing / putting phones in their slim back pockets, this is the wrong product. I'm lucky to be a man with actual pockets, though, and would love this.

Many here just hate anything that apple products don't have.

Yet. :)

Actually, that's exactly what we want Apple to do, as they're always done - wait until the technology is ready, don't sell beta hardware, let Samsung et al do that.

Which is too bad. I know a lot of Apple fans who would LOVE to be able to buy beta Apple products :)

Really? Interesting. Please find the quote where Apple claims to have “invented” multi-touch, rather than simply being the innovators who made it practical on a tiny screen and the first to bring it to market.

Not only did Jobs claim that, as noted in the quotes given you by others, but they also unbelievably tried to trademark the word "multitouch".

They almost got it too, until Jeff Han (remember his fantastic 2006 TED program demo of multitouch a year before the iPhone was shown off?) wrote a 70+ page letter to the USPTO explaining how it was a standard industry term that Apple did NOT invent.

samsunginfinityflexopen.jpg

Why fold that? Pretty much the same size as my BlackBerry Passport. Still better aspect ration than any iPhone these days. 2:1 aka 18:9 sucks for anything else than video content... Also the reason why an XS Max doesn not replace an iPad Mini...
