Can someone make sense of why Apple would want their competitor to manufacture their displays when it's like an open invitation to corporate espionage?

Since component manufacturers will compete on speed, quality, and price, it would be stupid if Apple made everything in-house with the high costs.

iPad Pro.. starting at only $999.

Don't miss all the new accessories! $200 for a keyboard dock, $100 for a a mouse, $50 for the stylus, etc.

All the convenience of a laptop, but you'll be dead-stuck with iOS apps.

Not unlike the stupid Win RT tablets, but pricier.

iPad Pro. I don't get it... What's the advantage of having more screen real estate on an iPad? A laptop running a full OS sure, but a tablet crippled with a feature-missing mobile OS?

I would hate if Apple got into the surface device market. It's a cool device but ultimately a mediocre tablets and mediocre laptop. Too big and thick for a tablet and just not as ergonomic as an ultrabook. Having that thing on your lap is not practical.

I do think there is a market for the surface device market. Actually, it would fit the needs and desires of my mom perfectly--a tablet for sitting on the couch, then attach the keyboard for productivity. I would also love to see a high quality stylus.

The ipad Air 2 doesn't seem to be generating much excitement this time

This is the iPad for which I have been waiting. I will gladly take the matte screen and 2GB RAM.

if they don't copy the surface pro type cover for this beast it will fail..

it needs a type cover and a stylus

it will hurt apple to copy, but they gotta do it

iPad for Apple Pay? Lol.

Imagine holding a 12.9" in store.

Apple should announce iPad at the same time as iPhone, main difference is screen size / cellular chip, and not much differentiation between the 2.

My god people lack vision. It could be used at retailers/small businesses as a point of sale interface so instead of an iPad with a square reader or something, it's ipad with apple pay nfc accepting payments

Why does the 12.9" iPad have a significantly bigger screen than a 13" Macbook, in that rendering?

Samsung will supply Apple with displays for the second-generation iPad Air and the 12.9-inch 'iPad Pro' starting later this year, reports Korean-news outlet inews24 (via Digitimes). The Korean company will begin manufacturing the displays in the coming months, as the panels are said to feature IPS technology similar to Apple's current line of iPads.

If the report is legitimate, it is likely that Apple will have a steady supply of panels for its first batch of iPad Air 2 units, which may launch in time for the upcoming holiday shopping season. Some reports have also claimed that the 12.9-inch iPad Pro could be released in early 2015, which may lead to Samsung becoming the top supplier of displays for the new tablet if other suppliers are unable to meet Apple's demands.

Apple has been attempting to reduce its reliance on Samsung as a component supplier due to tensions between the two companies as they have become top competitors in the mobile device market. However, Samsung's technological advantages and production capacity as a display supplier have proven valuable to Apple over the years, as the Korean company even became Apple's top iPad display supplier in Q1 2014.

The iPad Air 2 is rumored to feature a slightly thinner body, a faster A8 processor, 2GB of RAM, support for Apple Pay, and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Meanwhile, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is said to include a more powerful A8X processor to power its larger, high-resolution display.

Surely thats rendered next to an 11" Macbook Air??

That's why Apple will not have an event in October. They will just start selling the new iPad (probably on Oct 21st).

I wouldn't be surprised if that happened either. It seems iPads are getting a little long in the tooth. No point whipping up any excitement for incremental changes.

It will be interesting to see what the iPad Pro uses for software. Believe it or not, Microsoft has the "Pro" idea done right. It's a full featured Laptop OS without a keyboard. For the iPad to truly compete I'm thinking we need Yosemite optimized for stylus input.

Simply a larger iPad Air should not carry the name "Pro". Perhaps apple will not try to compete in this space and will simply give us an iPad Plus.
I was thinking the same thing. What are the "Pro" features? Are they including a stylus? What is pro about a larger iPad? I have an iPad Air and see no reason get something larger unless it adds a bunch of cool new features. Not software features but hardware features. Like a stylus or SD card......I think TouchID for Apple Pay is a given though.

This! Why not farm out the coding for the next OS X to Microsoft? Somehow, it just seems like they should be using a different thrid party (admittedly, I don't know whom).

It's a "best of breed" thing.

It'd be cheaper for me to grow tomatoes, lettuce, and livestock, but it is far more convenient (and less wasteful) to just go to the store and buy it.

Reasoning:
1. I can select what I want, and refuse what I don't.
2. I can go to another store if the one I am at doesn't have the quality I expect vs. in-house, I'm stuck with the quality that my people produce.
3. Producers will compete with others to drive down costs and increase quality.

It's a beautiful thing.

Exactly! That stood out for me as well. The two objects are precisely next to each other, so not even a very aggressive field of view would make this render correct in terms of perspective. That iPad seems like at least 14". On the other hand they could do something about that bezel on the MacBook Air, older MacBooks design was much better in more ways.

I think a device sized like this and with a probably premium price tag should run a more capable OS than iOS. By doing this, you would need a more flexible architecture for RAM (upgradeable) and memory (SSD) as well.

So I doubt this will happen and Apple will see more customers downgrading from the iPad's to the iPhone 6 plus rather than upgrading to bigger iPad's.

I do everything on my iPad. I only pull my MacBook out once a week to rearrange my music and keep the battery charged. I have more purchased software for my iPad than for my Mac too.

Although they get a lot out of it there must be some part of Samsung that hates supplying a product better than theirs :D

Yeah, but they like JOBS. And the PARTS division of Samsung employs way more people than the mouthy one that just makes phones.

There seems to be a sad contingent of Apple fans that inevitably get their collective panties twisted whenever Samsung is mentioned as a supplier for Apple. This I don't understand. Apple doesn't seem to care enough not to use them. So why should we? In the end, it's business. It always has been. It always will be Apple will use whomever they have to use to continue generating profit... moralizing be damned.

I personally don't give a hoot about who's components are inside as long as the final product meets my expectations. If it's Samsung's components, so be it.

Ah, you're new here. Welcome!! Leave the rationality at the door and you'll fit in just fine! :D:D:D

Samsung must need a share price boost, hence these rumours.

Its not rumors. Samsung has been supplying apple with different parts for all there products. Apple is a software company not a tech company like Samsung. Apple can't make its products without getting the parts from the tech companies.

My issue is exactly as you stated. You need to use a macbook to rearrange/add/edit music that was not purchased on iTunes. Similar with videos and iPhotos (I add faces and organize my events through my macbook). If iOS could natively handle that, then it would be golden. I want my ipad to be a device my iphone can sync to, not a device that has to sync with my macbook. Until it does that, iOS will always be a second hand OS in my eyes.

I think you can't see the forest for the trees. Apple Pay requires neither being at a brick and mortar store nor NFC to be useful. One can make online purchases with it using Touch ID, making such purchases easy and more secure because of the way Apple Pay passes off credit card information from the iDevice.

But working in DC I see a lot of foreign tourists using their iPad as a camera and GPS. Apple Pay on iPad would work well in a retail situation IF the next iPads have NFC. So, I'm unsure where the joke is, even if you were joking.
