I will get a some sort of galaxy phone at my work next week. Will be interesting to see what it can bring. Won’t be any top of the range model but it will be the first time I will use one since being an iPhone user since 2009. Other than that these ads are so lame and 2005.

I never really understood the pixel-mania. 108MP on a sensor of ~9.5mm x ~7.1mm gives a *really* small pixel. My Sony Alpha iii has 25M Pixels on a sensor size of 35mm x 24mm (full format) and I never found to have too little pixels (frankly the images are rather too big in size), albeit the sensor size is more than 12 times the surface.

108MP raw just gives enormous image sizes without much benefit. For all normal use-cases the pixel binning approach by reducing to 12MP seems the reasonable way to go. The only benefit with 108MP on such a small sensor size would be in very bright situations, where the light entering on each single pixel is enough to have a decent picture without a lot of noise. Thus in such a situation by using just a small area of the image (take 12 pixels out of the 108) you can have a good magnification without loosing a lot of quality.

Anyways. The iPhone 14pro sensor with 1/1.28" is actually a bit bigger than the 1/1.33" Sensor of the Galaxy S22 Ultra by around 7.5% in surface. which allows more light to be captured and reduces noise (above all in low light scenarios). For any real-world use I would assume that the 1/128" 48MP sensor of the 14 Pro will deliver very similar results to the 1/1.33" 108MP sensor of the Ultra when it comes to raw image quality.

Will be interesting to see though what results are delivered by the improved software stack. I don't really know how the software stack in the Samsung devices compares to Apples software.

All in all I find these camera arrays (regardless of whether we are talking about an S22 Ultra or an iPhone 14 Pro) hugely impressive. Given the still small sensor sizes I find the picture quality (including things like the bokeh on portraits - even if it's just done by software) amazing when comparing it to DSLR cameras. Looking at what was possible just 5 to 10 years ago, this is really incredible. Would be interesting to see, how much one could get out of a full size DSLR sensor when combining it with the same advanced software algorithms that are used in todays top level phones.

I have not seen one person in every day life with a folding phone. Yet nearly everyone with iPhones….many people would rather have an iPhone 8 than a droid
I was at a meeting with our technical team last week and someone had one. It attracted about 30s of interest (almost everyone else on the table was sporting iPhone 13 minis)

The funny thing is there are lots of people out there that marketing like this works on. Even my Dad quotes things like that as being a factual reason why you shouldn't buy an iPhone.

"As you enter a world where heads will turn, must none in your direction. Where the highest resolution smartphone will be in someone else's pocket."
In order of gravity somewhat:
Today, where turmoil, energy crisis, inflation and desperation has the spotlight; where some North American cities have worse thefts, assaults and murders per capita than the most dangerous countries…
In this world of rampant vanity, rocket powered by “you look at me” social media, personal attacks by its users trying to look any minor trait or flaw to shame or downright destroy you…
Where privacy breaches and mass surveillance aren’t sci-fi movies nor conspiracy theories anymore…

I definitely utterly totally want no heads turning my direction (or anywhere remotely near around).

Maybe I’m being reserved and old school, having a grand total of zero posts on an Instagram account of 5+ years, and opening Twitter maybe once a month usually by accident…
But except if someone’s job and daily bread rides on that, it sounds such a bad idea directing attention.

Um....Apple talks about their competition in the keynotes when they compare. We all know who they're referring to and so do they. Is Apple marketing bad now too? Oh no, it's just when others do what apple do that it's bad.
The part you missed is that Apple do not refer to their competitors in their ads. And they don’t stoop as low to do it immediately after a competitor announces new products. Samsung just look entirely childish.

They are so ridiculous. Mocking with the sheer existence of foldable phones that got largely negative reviews and don’t sell well. People ridicule Apple‘s reality distortion field, but at least Apple erects it over their customers, not over themselves.

Anecdotal datapoint: My colleague actually has one. She is quite happy with it („big screen“, „easier to stow away“ etc.). She claims that she doesn’t even notice the wrinkle anymore (guess it’s a similar psychological mechanism as with the notch on an iPhone).

The one point, however, that would keep me away from a foldable, is the plasticky feel of the screen. The rest of that thing feels sturdy and of good quality, but the plastic screen is a definitive dealbreaker for me. Makes it feel more like a kid’s toy than a serious device.

Check out this sample photo, full resolution:
It's like 75 percent smear.
25 percent detail.

The 108mp claims are obviously marketing b.s.

And this sample photo is at ISO 50, mind you. It'll only get worse as you go higher.

For comparison, here's downloadable legitimate 100mp images from the new Hasselblad:

On the Hasselblad, you have real detail. Not smear. _DETAIL_. Legitimate, honest-to-your-favorite-deity detail.
Most phones don't have enough lens to take advantage of the sensors (IMO, hence all the computational photography). That doesn't mean that the sensor isn't 108mp as they said.

I remember being somewhat disappointed when my iPhone 5 didn't completely blow my Nikon D50 out of the water when taking pictures.

Despite all these childish ads (let it go Samsung!) I have never once been interested in their folding phones or leaving Apple for an Android. Like literally never even CONSIDERED it.
Tim Apple just called and told me he is so proud of you.

I mean these ads are clearly in jest in my opinion. No Apple enthusiast is going to see this and suddenly want to change to Samsung and vice versa. We all know Apple don’t really innovate much at the minute and aren’t often first BUT when they do it, they do it better.

1. Even with only 48MP, Apple still has a better camera.
2. I don’t care about folds anyway because I don’t want plastic on my front screen and a giant crease in the middle when when I’m using that size screen, it’s on my Mac.

Samsung’s attack ads combined with my personal experience with their ‘customer service’ ensure I’ll never buy another Samsung device again.

Their ads are tacky. Any company that runs attack ads like that only make themselves look classless.

But hey, it’s an interesting strategy. Remember the ones attacking iPhone users as stupid? So…you’re calling your potential future customers idiots? Ok.
