Samsung Unveils Galaxy S8 and S8+ With Iris and Facial Recognition, No Home Button

The difference is that Apple is creating their own software from scratch, whereas Samsung simply adds their stuff on top of Android. If they really want to be like Apple, they should write their own OS instead of slapping stuff on top of someone else's to make things look different, and in the process adding bloat, lag and other side effects.

That's one of deal-breakers for one of these OEM Android phones. The only Android handsets I would consider would be either Pixel or Nexus, at least they get updates directly from Google as soon as they are released.
It's the reason why I decided to keep using Apple. It wouldn't be a problem for those who upgrade every year, but that 2% Nougat adoption rate is pretty abysmal. And the fact the Galaxy S8 won't even be coming with Nougat 7.1, god knows when they're able to update.

All that and a headphone jack! You're move apple.

All what??
I see a VERY nice screen (that's not dissimilar from their high quality screens of the last few generations), the EXACT same camera as last year (isn't that pretty much unheard of, on Android flagships?), a very awkward fingerprint scanner placement w/ a special "screw you" to left-handed people, like myself (to put in perspective, there's over seven times more lefties in the world than there are gingers, soooooo....), and a 2nd voice assistant that only works w/ all the Samsung bloatware that most disable immediately.
Yes- the front design looks quite lovely, due to the weak partial implementation of their highly localized version of 3D Touch/hidden software home button.... but I really don't see what features could be considered "all that".

2017 is calling.
Keep drinking the delicious Apple Kool-Aid.
Not all use cases are a good fit for wireless headphones.
And speaking of "fit" not all ears welcome the design of Apple's Pods.
And from what I've been hearing, controlling volume and track movement is quite short of flawless.
Cost is another factor. Apple's wireless headphones are not cheap. The phones are already expensive.
Excuses?
Samsung just showed that Apple didn't need to delete the headphone jack for space or waterproofing.
Anyone who believes it was for courage instead of profit, as in pushing the expensive Pods, are only kidding themselves.
I'll keep buying iPhones as long as Apple sells one with a headphone jack.
After that, it is on to the other options in the market place.

I realize everyone is entitled to an opinion, but saying this phone looks like garbage is coming with obvious bias.
They said the same thing of Amoled a few years ago. When Apple moves the home button to the back and will have Amoled over six months, they'll all hail the invention

also - i see samsung trying to ape apple's foray into health...

...getting a doctor on Skype. Really?

I can smell the failure already.
What doctor will give up their time to do this? This doctor will have no information on you, and the main advice given will be "you should go see a doctor". If they do give out real advice what happens if they give bad advice?

Good for lawyers perhaps?

Actually, I AM a doctor who gives up my time to do this. EXACTLY this! I work with a company called American Well, aka Amwell, and they're the company which provides telehealth services for the Samsung Galaxy S8. Up until today, The service has only been available on Mac and Windows computers or iOS devices. The Galaxy S8 is the first Android device to have Amwell capability.

But to address your comments, I will tell you that I make about the same amount of money per hour doing this as I do seeing patients in my office. The difference is, I have zero overhead when I'm sitting at home in front of my computer with no employees. Also, I can sign on anytime I want to see patients. It is to being a doctor what Uber is to being a driver...I've never been happier! I can treat about 9 out of 10 of the things I see. 1 out of 10 is something that requires a more extensive evaluation. But things like urinary tract infections, allergies, sinus infections, eczema, poison ivy, influenza, common colds, migraines, acid reflux, etc. are all very simple to treat over a webcam. A heart attack? Not so much.

So, it is a great feature to add to a phone. I HOPE Apple includes it in their Health app in the future.

If you're curious, check this out: www.amwell.com

Also, this video captures the essence of what it is:

Soooo.... you're okay with the fact that Apple uses Samsung parts (which are the most critical ingredients to a product), but you avoid anything else that has this brand even though they are seen as one of the top home appliance brands on the market.......

I wouldn't be surprised if you were a racist also.

I have to say you're the first person to ever link my dislike for Samsung with racism. And I don't say that in a congratulatory way.

No headphone jack means risk from exploding battery powered Apple Beats. No thanks.

To be fair, you can use an adapter.

Nice looking phone, mostly all aesthetics, dont functionally improve experience. These are the downsides for me.

  • Fingerprint sensor in the back, horrible ergonomics, iris scanner security questionable
  • Why doesn't Samsung phone use a Samsung processor - Exynos - this is not confidence inspiring
  • No 3D touch like functionality - I love that feature on my iPhone
  • No dual cameras - Samsung was not able to develop software (software not Samsung's forte) for DOF processing
  • Paltry 4GB RAM
  • What happened to the 'Edge' screen hype
  • Samsung software comes with redundant functions that compete with native Android
  • Non standard aspect ratio of the display - developers nightmare

- Fingerprint sensor on back and iris scanner questionable? based on what?
- Exynos cannot be used on US markets due Qualcom licensing issues. Rest of the world has it. Bigger market.
- Then you like it, fair enough
- Why dual cameras? It has same camera as S7/S7Edge which already has better camera than iPhone 7 (DxoMark and other neutral reviews) and now they have done some refinements to software side.
- RAM is not an issue currently. Not with iPhone or Android flagships.
- It has "edge" display but it's not advertised as separate feature
- Samsung UI has bloatware, I agree
- Aspect ratio is not nightmare for developers. Are you one?

Based on your comments, you have not even looked into details of the S8 and you are just barking how "bad it is"...

I can't believe how arrogant some Apple defenders are here. You can't just dismiss your competitors forever. Keep pretending you'll have the edge over them you have right now forever, and the next thing you know they're outranking you left and right. This happened to companies like BlackBerry and Nokia back when the first iPhone debuted.

You might not like it, or the Samsung corporate culture (which by itself is a huge turnoff for me), but what does it take to be a little humble?

Not being interested and dismissing are two different things. I always like to see what the competition has to offer, but I have no intention of buying it. That does not mean I'm dismissing it.

This device looks great.

Sadly, I'm not willing to give up split-screen multitasking, file-system access, the back button, the headphone jack, and with the Note series, the pen, so it doesn't matter how pretty Apple makes the iPhone.

Looks like the larger Note is in my future, and it looks bright if it's anything like these.

Then again, I need to keep my Note 5 until 2018, so maybe iPhone 9 will have finally caught up feature-wise.

But I doubt it.

Dunno.... if the S8 does not have "all that" what's the iPhone 7? Three old design...... dunno if you can bash the S8 where apple currently is

Seeing such an amazing phone come out of Samesong, I can't wait to see what Apple does to top it! Or if they'll even try....

Apple better have a good competitor to this. I really hope the "iPhone Edition" rumors of it being a whole new tier are false.

Yeah, while paying 33% more. Samsung just took a lot of pricing wind out of Apple's rumored $1k price tag. Knowing what Samsung has done as a slightly higher cost than 7/7+, I think many will find it hard to shell out $250 more than an S8 for an iPhone 8.
yep

£779 for the S8 plus is reasonable and there's no way the iphone 8 is worth paying £1,000 when the S8 is going to be similar or even better in so many ways.

screen size for one is a big factor here

You get what you pay for. I have absolutely no issue paying $1,000 for a great iPhone. A lot of other people might, but I don't. However, I do expect it to be one damn good phone for the price.

If iPhone 8 comes close to this specs for over $ 1000 they'll hail it as the best phone ever, lol. People's mindset are still trapped into 2007 when Apple did something really special. They haven't been doing something special for their customers in years instead of milking their past successes. Apple knows it has trapped some of their loyal users. It's time to free your mind and look around with an open mind set. As much as you love Apple, Apple's only love for you is your money. Look at their offerings compared to others for proof. It hasn't always been like that. But surely for the last four years.
