Good point.

I know if I don't get the S8 now then I won't when the iphone 8 is out. I have been tempted past two days to get the S8 but realise I'm to into my apple products to switch. The OS works too well in my daily life.

7 plus
apple watch
macbook pro
ipad pro
apple pencil
air pods

just hard to switch when you use all these apple devices on a daily basics.
Yes that's why I haven't pre-ordered yet. I still have time to think about it. Probably will but I'm not rushing into anything yet. I can think about it for a while and still get it on launch day if I want. And even if it gets sold out and I had to wait I wouldnt be that bothered.

We all know if this was a new iPhone I wouldn't be waiting around. I'd have been camped out with my devices waiting for pre-orders to open and buying it without even thinking lol

I just wish Apple would make the iPhone 8 with a big enough screen.

Yeah if this was the iphone 8 I would have been up at a certain time just to pre order. The OLED iphone will be 5.8 inches but 5.1 usable but we need to wait to see what that means and if we can still do certain tasks on that 5.8 inch screen otherwise they wouldn’t market it as 5.8 surely.

Will see in September I suppose. I may still pick up a S8 plus but months down the line if the price drops. I love what Samsung have done with it and I really am impressed by android but IOS is just better for me.

I feel like if I'm going to get the phone then I should give it a real chance. Last year I got the S7 edge at the end of July which was too close to the new iPhone launch and didn't really give it a chance as I was anticipating the iPhone too much and just got rid of it in the end without really giving it a chance. However last year I believed the rumours that the iPhone 7 was going to be a boring update which was part of the reason why I got the S7 edge. However in the last few weeks before the 7 launched new features leaked which made it a good upgrade and then I was sold by the time I'd finished watching the keynote. I kind of feel as though the same thing might happen this year.

Also if I've waited until September and not bought the S8 plus then I didn't think I'll buy it even after the iPhone 8 launches. I'll probably still end up buying the 8 or even the 7S plus if it is a decent upgrade and the iPhone 8 really does only have 5.1 inches of useable screen area.

Yeah no matter what when you sell yourself it’s not worth it and you will give android a try as soon as the keynote finishes you are convinced it’s the right thing to do. I like the newest and greatest and wish I could be happy with 1 year off tech but I can’t lol. Least this year with OLED/wireless charging coming to the iphone I think it’s really worth upgrading. Maybe 6s plus to 7 plus I shouldn’t of upgraded as it wasn’t a massive upgrade. I only did it for the duel camera.

Yes they do:

~ Have Android activation lock bypassed (did this myself - bought a Moto G3 as "found"/"locked" and bypassed the "lock" and set it up as a new one)

~ Extra waiting time before things happen (good old Dalvik.)

~ Inconsistent and confusing hardware support from OEMs.

~ An extra 20mS of lag for audio.

I can find more. :)

Sounds like online dating.
I stand corrected. Thank you, sir.

Of course, the previous 2 times I've broken phones were by accident. Otherwise, I've had a good 6 year run thus far.

Still, accidents happen. Having a more expensive phone doesn't magically make it safer. I take care of my stuff no matter what. Akin to driving... I drive safely whether if I'm in a Toyota, or if I got a chance to drive a luxury car.

That said, I would want to wait a few more years before letting my 10 and 5yo niece and nephew borrow my phone, and even then, I'd have to think about it.

More good feelings to you then! It is indeed personal preferences. I'd feel like a bloody idiot if I paid $650 to $100 for a phone when a $220 phone looks slightly less good, but still does everything I'd need to out of it.
Yep accidents do happen, it's just something you have to account for really.

And well, to each his own then!

No you can't. You might be able to disable one, but it will still at there taking up storage.
This is the award winner for desperation post of the day. 20 bucks buys you a sd card that will up storage from a Base of 64 to 164gig.. and you are bitching about a mail app using a few Meg!!! Brilliantly lame!!!

I'm hoping that is sarcasm because otherwise I'm betting you are the type that held onto a flip phone for as long as possible.

No it's not sarcasm and my wanting to use wired professional headphones, that are not even closely available in a wireless version, is my business and has nothing to do with flip phones. I want to have a choice but Apple took away that choice.

Samsung found a way to keep the headphone jack AND give consumers a fantastic phone, which is also very water resistant so I salute their engineering ability (Apple is not the only company that has engineering ability).

Apple could have kept the headphone jack, made the iPhone just as waterproof while supporting BOTH high quality wired and wireless connections, thereby giving consumers A CHOICE. But Apple's dictatorial approach and their sheer arrogance wont allow them to do that. They have it in their minds that wireless is the only way forward, which will be interesting if they remove the headphone jack from the iPad and their MacBook ... don't think that won't cause more outrage especially from MacBook users.

Close to 100 people liked my post, which means I am not alone in my thinking. Time will tell on this whole headphone jack debate. If Samsung continues to release a great product, comparable to the iPhone that still has a headphone jack, we may learn what the majority of consumers think, not just what Apple thinks or sarcastic "flip phone" posts.

Nice looking phone, mostly all aesthetics, dont functionally improve experience. These are the downsides for me.

  • Fingerprint sensor in the back, horrible ergonomics, iris scanner security questionable
  • Why doesn't Samsung phone use a Samsung processor - Exynos - this is not confidence inspiring
  • No 3D touch like functionality - I love that feature on my iPhone
  • No dual cameras - Samsung was not able to develop software (software not Samsung's forte) for DOF processing
  • Paltry 4GB RAM
  • What happened to the 'Edge' screen hype
  • Samsung software comes with redundant functions that compete with native Android
  • Non standard aspect ratio of the display - developers nightmare

I don't agree with most of those downsides.

I think the back fingerprint sensor is an ideal place. It's awkward to use a thumb to open the phone when you pick it up - it makes the phone easy to slip out of your hands.

I'm also excited about the iris scan. When the phone is face up (day) you are instantly in. When it's down, night, you unlock when you pick it up.

And yes, the dual camera on the iphone is nice, but only for one type of shot. For every other shot the Samsung GS6 is better. Never mind the GS7. And certainly I expect this to be even better.

Some say redundant. Some say choice. Same resolution on both models.

This is a form factor change, not an internals change. People are eating up the form factor. This is looks, not substance. But it is some great looks and it took a ton of engineering to get rid of the home button on Android. (Though I might point out that BBRY had no home button necessary on BB10 OS due to its swipe based operating system.)

And no, of course the CPU will not top the iPhone 7. But CPU speed is fast enough in all these phones.

Exactly. Hypocrites, man. If Apple would do this they would get furious. Especially if they increased the price like Sammy did. I expect this to be a flop. Vocal minority aside, who's buying a super expensive Samsung phone? Those that buy it every year. Will they buy it JUST for the screen? Doubtful.

Plus, reviewers are already laughing and grousing about the Galaxy's fingerprint sensor placement.

That's because they placed it beside the lens. Below the lens makes more sense and is much more natural when picking up the phone. My index finger already rests below the camera lens.

so you only bring up testing in what apple does good in?

I thought you wanted the most powerful and highest performing chip? you do know the gs8 will have the most powerful GPU in any phone until the next gen iPhone comes out right.

I already said I take benchmarks with a grain of salt. Not sure what else is there to discuss.

Didn't mean to shatter your "Android as the corporate OS of choice" fantasy, but frankly- it was absurd.

Your rant is frankly absurd. The "desktop" metaphor is going the way of the dodo bird. With a Virtual Desktop (VDI) infrastructure companies can just hand out phones and give a Citrix, Terminal Services, or VmWare Horizon client and be done with it. All data stays within the host server and those desktops can be secure as you want them to be. Since they are most likely virtualized TCO is quite low especially when you factor you are already providing them a smartphone. With a dock like DeX with keyboard, mouse, and monitor support this becomes a great idea to pilot or implement.

We also don't know the DeX's capabilities - it may very well support future phones (GS9) as it uses USB-C as the connector and just needs to have space.

Many companies are doing VDI either in pilot or in production.

EDIT: Oh Wait, Samsung has been working with VDI partners to make this viable for business. And at $149 is certainly an interesting preposition for businesses.
Samsung notes that it has worked closely with Citrix, VMware and Amazon for its virtual desktop environment, in order to supporting log-ins to Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). The idea is that business users will be able to simply plug their phone into a DeX Station at any office, log into their VDI and access all of their work applications and documents just by carrying their smartphone around.

Me thinks you are the one that needs to get out of Denial. IT is rapidly changing and the old way of thinking is quickly getting shown the door.

Hold on, S8 has split screen multitasking like S7, file system access?, back b

My comment was in reference to the iPhone, not other Galaxy devices. I'm basically married to Samsung (or Google Pixel devices) until Apple catches up on those features, which they probably never will.

I find that sad, because I'd love to have my all-Apple ecosystem back. With every passing year, this is less and less likely.

Feels like Apple got beaten to the punch for the first time in the mobile space.

Perhaps my view's a bit twisted, but it feels like they were always the first with major features, at least in terms of a polished implementation.

I don't want to switch to Samsung and I'm hoping that Apple blow it out of the water, but I wasn't expecting the S8 to be so slick. It's a good thing Samsung muddy up the OS to hold my temptation at bay.

I still don't think there is a big demand for the S8. 24 hours after in went up for pre order on Verizon, there is no backorder. Still delivering on the 21st. Not saying it's a bad phone, but one can probably walk into any store on the 21st, check it over, and choose to buy if they want.

Preordered a black S8 for myself and silver S8+ for the wife, they will be here shortly after I get back from vacation, perfect timing!

No need to switch. Apple is typically late to the party when it comes to features, but their implementation is always better. The same will happen this year. Samsung typically takes rumored (or first hand knowledge since they are a major supplier) features and rushes to release first. This is why many features are half baked or considered gimmicky. Unfortunately for Samsung, it never helps, as Apple continues to sell more iPhones than the Galaxy line each year.

The note 7 was backordered.

Exactly. There is a reason why Samsung releases 6 months ahead of Apple. If they released at the same time, Apple would sweep up with them. I give Google credit. They are challenging Apple by releasing their Pixel phones at the same time. Pure Android vs Pure Apple. That's going to be the big game from this point forward.

Right, but the 8 is not.
