Gotta wonder how long that screen hinge is going to hold up.

Somebody needs to subject that phone to cyclic opening and closing to see how long before pixels start dying.
One would assume they have stressed tested the hinge and display in a lab long before it ever went into mass production.
I'd be curious to know what the failure point is. If it lasted more than 100k open and close cycles, I'd be impressed.

I cannot spend my money on a galaxy Fold until it has a s-pen with proper s-pen support...that cost is atrocious... when its called the Galaxy Note Fold I will buy (most likely generation 3 or 4)..............but that S10 Plus looks so sweet especially the top-end model with the ceramic back................

Moreover, for that kind of money...I need current ipad pro processing and gpu power.

Hopefully all can lay off Samsung on the pricing..

This is a cutting edge technology attempt and Apple has been RIGHT at the forefront of jacking customers out of money with price increases, features being cut and accessories being externalized the last few years.

A new product that is competing with another while offering better features for the price? How outrageous!

I'm always amazed of people that come to MacRumors to just bash Apple. Can't you just celebrate if you like it?.

On a separate note, I do want to read reviews and see how this device behaves and the the extra value of this kind of concept in real life scenarios.
Let's have a drink shall we? :D

Never mind - you missed the joke..
Some of us are pretty frustrated with the iPad software limitations was my point.

Cheers
me too, that's why I gave mine away.

this device will only gain traction if enough people will buy it and developers start coding apps for it. at this price point and considering the notoriously stingy Android crowd (see apps devs' profits vs iOS) I don't see this happening.

I don't understand why everyone here is so excited about this. This phone may be the stupidest thing I've seen in years.

I'd say the better analogy to the Homer is a touch bar...

Phones are getting pretty thin - folding makes sense, as long as they're durable and thin overall. Now if it had four folds, I'd be with you.

I'll give them credit in one area here, the S10 and S10+ are priced how Apple should have, $899/999.

Flattered.

I can see a folding tablet - unfolding an iPad Mini into a Pro-esque form factor - but not an iPhone.

But yes - we'll see.

You’re flattered that we will make fun of you in 3 years?? Not sure you know what “flattered” means. ;)

All kidding aside, all Apple phones will have folding screens within 3 years except their “budget” device. It’s the future of mobile devices. And you can save THIS post if you like. :D

A revolutionary device (2007) Apple. 12 years later a revolutionary device... and not Apple. Much to think about.

Cheapest Xs Max and cheapest iPad Pro is $1099 + $799 = $1998.

But you’re right, you don’t save money. It’s exactly $18 more expensive still :p

Edit: math fail. That’s $1898. So it is indeed cheaper to go Xs Max and iPad Pro :)

....and the fold would still have twice as much ram of both combined.

Of course I'd never hand any money to Samsung (nothing against Android but been stung by their crap phones and TV's before) and the device in phone mode looks absolute gash, but you have to say the iPhone X series looks proper lame-ass in comparison to Samsung's 10th Anniversary Edition device.

What is Apple doing with Micro LED for example; it's what, about three or four years that they've been sitting on that tech and not knowing what to do with it? Don't answer, they can't even ship their new Mac Pro or AirPower devices.

Samsung just "out Apple'd" Apple with the new fold phone. Even with the ~ $2,000 USD price tag. LOL

Regardless, I haven't said "Wow" about a piece of technology since at least the debut of the iPad back in 2010.

I guess Apple will release more emojis and watch bands in response to this new tech category.

I can't wait until we get to the era of the Westworld foldable phablet.

Looks impressive. As much as I love to hate on Samsung for the fact that they jumped to the to market leader by copying Apple and probably wouldn't have the money to invest in things like this if they hadn't cheated their way here, at least now they are finally being innovative. I have a feeling that, in actual use, it will be trouble. But it's good that Samsung is pioneering forward with this technology and likely bringing the cost down over time so that when Apple is ready to do this, the stage will be set.

I can't help but think that Apple's obsession with thinness was leading up to this. It can't be too thick when folded in half. Their expertise with miniaturization will likely make certain that they end up with the thinnest foldable phone.

An interesting idea is to think about the current iPhone XS vs. the older iPads with the curved edges that went to a sharper point on the sides. If you have an iPhone with those rounded corners and open it up, it would basically look like those older iPads.

I also wonder if Apple will find a way around using three screens by having it unfold in the opposite direction. But the problem with that is needing space for the camera hardware on the back. Having to unfold it to use the camera would be annoying.

One of my theories for why the iPad Mini hadn't been updated in ages is because Apple was thinking a folding device would replace the need for that. But I think they are updating it this year because they are a ways out from releasing a folding device and they have also realized the price pushes many iPad Mini buyers out of the market for such a (as of 2019) niche device. But as I said years ago, I think that foldable phones like this will be the norm and the next evolution of smartphones. I just thought we would see it in the early 2020s and not 2019. Hopefully Samsung doesn't screw this up because people dropping $2000 on a smartphone are going to expect a quality product.
