I dont see the point. The screen when closed is tiny. You will have to use it open 99% of the time.
Nearly $500 overpriced IMO; $1500 would have been good entry price (and still high for a phone even with its specs).
And that weird corner notch lol, just why.

4.6 inches is not tiny.

Somehow my iPhone SE is perfectly usable despite being smaller than that.

my point is a device with Nvidia 1060gtx, i7 CPU, 32 gb Ram, best 4K display is $2000. This Samsung Fold is not reasonably priced!

I'm sorry, you are probably a troll, but I can't let this go lol. Technology gets more expensive when you shrink it OR when you do something new that no one has done. The Samsung Fold is both A) much smaller than your laptop and B) using technology in a way no one else in the world is.

Why do people pay for a gaming laptop like Razer or Alienware or MSI or whatever instead of saving a thousand dollars and building a MORE POWERFUL gaming desktop computer? Because of portability. Same principle here. Seriously hard to comprehend your ignorance or your trollish aptitude.

....and the fold would still have twice as much ram of both combined.

And also the Xs Max and iPad Pro could potentially still outperform the Fold individually in benchmarks even with the lesser amount of RAM.

This is the first true mainstream luxury phone on the market! I’m all in for one! Let the plebs have their affordable XS.

I’m joking but not joking. I’m actually thinking of picking one up if it impresses me in the flesh.

Normally I enjoy Gruber, but I don't find this just released take very compelling or even that thoughtful honestly.

https://daringfireball.net/linked/2019/02/20/samsung-galaxy-fold

The piece seems to mainly be about pointing out how "he was right" about high prices being the new norm.

Seriously - who cares man - the "claim chowder" routine is a little tired.

His take here feels rushed.

I feel like he is doing more of that vs how he used to post longer more considered pieces down the road...maybe he will again if he tries one at some point to see where and what Apple might do in this space

Generally speaking, I'm exhausted by the general attitude in so much of the Apple blog/pod sphere these days. Apple is simply not the young imaginative experimental company it once was anymore.

Too many hold Apple's efforts in too high regard given what they've actually done in the last 3-5 years.

What the hell is going on with these prices?

This is a luxury product. They’re not targeting the average customer with this Fold. Even with financing this will cost nearly $100/month which means a $200/month phone bill. Expect to see them in the hands of fashionistas and influencers until the price drops a few years down the road.

It's stellar. I like it, but I don't like it folded, and it would've been nice if the darn thing ran something other than Android.

Say ... Chrome, when unfolded. I still don't get the point of Android on a tablet or any screen larger than 6" really.

Just give us Chrome on anything larger than 6.1" cellphone screens and REALLY push Chrome to compete with iOS.

That will be the key, what is it like in a hands on test. Will it have the wow factor and ease of use to back it up?

Yo

You do know that the iPhone XS Max is only $500 less than that right? That is $1500 for what is a very conventional smartphone bettered by many much cheaper competitors.

I'm not saying this Samsung will be a success or that it's priced correctly, but hearing Apple fans complaining about the price for what is actually an innovative new exciting product is a joke.

We should celebrate this news, if not the price, and I hope that this is the start of some much needed innovation in the smartphone space.

I will say this is an interesting phone but lets put this in perspective…. the iPhone max is 6.5" and this thing unfolded is 7.3" making it .8" bigger. I think they should have went bigger (if it would have allowed them to make each side thinner). I really like the idea but to me this fails as a great phone and as great tablet. So basically your getting a subpar phone experience and a subpar tablet experience with a high end price. If people actually thought about it you could get a iPhone XS and an iPad Pro (with pencil) for less money and both would be better. I think this is a good step in the right direction but for me its an easy pass. As far as the s10 I think they did a great job (long story short I went from a iOS to android recently and can honestly say for the average user there is no way android is better then iOS, but for those who like to tinker android wins).

I have the disposable income to buy it but my sensibility says NO! That much for a mobile is ridiculous to me.

How was the build quality on the Samsung foldable? I haven’t seen nor handled one yet. Was it clunky? Didn’t feel good in hand?
It will run Android, right? And have Samsung's "world renowned" customer support?

You can visually discern it will be clunky because it's too big when unfolded and too fat when folded.

The smaller screen looks stupid too.

Pass.

Gruber can suck it. If suddenly I have a burning desire to spend 2 large I will go buy an iPhone and an iPad Pro.

That user grossly misrepresented what Gruber wrote. He said that higher phone prices in principle are justifiable because the phone is the most important and most used computer im many people‘s lives. About the Fold specifically, he was quite clear that it absolutely doesn‘t deserve that absurd 2K price tag:
Gruber said:
But I look at the Galaxy Fold and I still see a prototype. It looks terrible when folded — a thick device with a tiny display with huge forehead and chin. Clearly the two modes are not equals — the primary mode is open, and folded is an afterthought. And even in tablet mode, there’s a weird off-center notch in the corner. It just seems clunky.

You're just throwing shade. This reminds me of everything said about the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Air's design features.

BTW, You do realize the notch can't be over the hinge, right?

Despite a thousand bright spotlights in that auditorium, a stunning lack of charisma on that stage!

So, is it usual for Sammy to unveil a new product, and provide almost zero specs? Battery life?... errr.. “it’s got a lot of power”.. etc

Had to laugh.. “it’s easy to open Google Maps”... followed by three presses of the icon before it opens! Teething troubles with these new touch displays, perchance??

Little Salty?

Not joking....I love Samsung but this would be their most powerful android tablet for maybe the next 2 years.... hence it has a current processor and not last years and tons of ram...they really should start using the most up to date processors and ram on their tablets otherwise I love my tab s4 and its actually a suitable tablet size imo which is anything above 8.3 inches or more........
