It's cool looking but I can't see many people buying it at that price. You could just buy an iPhone XS Max & an iPad Mini and save hundreds of dollars.

Don’t like it in it’s closed position. Too thick and looks retro. Don’t want to sound like a hater. Just don’t think this thing will gain the interest Samsung wants it to. It’s simply not attractive.

Finally, people can **** about "omgz Apple is expensive"

No, they won't. Samsung has been selling expensive products for a while. Is one of these things that they had to copy. Heck, even Google has followed Apple with the prices. But it won't matter when these companies sell super-expensive trash! It is a big deal only when Apple does it.

4.6” is great for the closed phone, but need closer to a 16x10 aspect ratio for the tablet part. That would give you an iPad sized device unfolded...

Isn't the iPad 4:3 aspect ratio?

This Galaxy Fold unfolded is 4.2:3... so that's pretty close to the iPad aspect ratio.

16:10, however, wouldn't be very similar to the iPad.

Get your photocopiers ready, Cupertino! :D

This is THE biggest Mic drop in tech history right now!

#Applepawned Apple you’ve just been owned and punked like a jailhouse floosy!

Love how Samsung specifically gives their 10yr anniversary follow up vs Apple. I’m not even mad about the price as this kind of tech warrants it upon debut!

Apple needs to stop playing us users as mindless fools. When device revenue, shipments and sales drop significantly in next quarter along with services drop Apple will finally return to innovation!!

No idea what anyone would want to copy that but guessed you were joking.

It is definitely something new but is either a small tablet or a really odd aspect ratio / *thick* phone. Interesting to see if it sells so there's a gen2 improvement.

Nokia’s engineers of their Communicator lineup are rolling in their sleep right now. The last of that breed the E90 was nice but overall twice as thick and that was just less than 10yrs algo.

Fair. I’d agree with that, but also say that “how it looks” does not equal a great product.

Apple, if anything, is way TOO focused on how things look (vs other important priorities)
Packing in features for the sake of it or being first to the market doesn’t either

Yes. The 10 year boompopshlocka really outdid Apple.

I’m an Apple guy inside and out, but damn. Damsung jist made me think more about next cycle of upgrade.

There are so many times I am out and about that I wish I had just a bit more screen space on my 10xs max to do some reading and even gaming because I don’t like carrying the 12.9” iPad Pro with me everywhere.

Having the option of more space in one device is incredible.

Can’t wait to see my first sighting in public.

I am looking forward to Apple's device launch this year after Samsung's true engineering feat. They are beating Apple at their own game, pricing, true innovation, sleek design.

All I can say is if the iPhone is just a small bump up for the XS and XR this year, throw in additional camera, make the notch 20% slimmer than it is, and call it a day... that would only show how far behind Apple truly is.
If Apple can't get the in-display fingerprint sensor in too, maybe it's because Samsung has a patent on it or some exclusive licensing agreement? Either way, Apple needs to innovate. I mean, they don't need to given they have a ton of money, but it seems like were at an inflection point where Samsung is really outpacing Apple in terms of mobile phone tech.

I will wait and see what Apple's response to this device is this year, though Samsung really did a 200% job this year, and maybe... just maybe... I will think about getting a Samsung device depending on what the response is. I thought the Google Pixel 3 was already good enough, but Samsung really put on quite a show. Well done Samsung!

Ya. What features are packed in JUST for the sake of it?
I know none of the specs whatsoever. Please enlighten.

Good points.

I feel pretty iPhone maxed at this point. I honestly am thinking of not upgrading my iPhone for the first time since inception.

I keep wishing Apple would make an "iPhone Nano" or something along those lines.

As it is, I don't think that will happen and my iPhone 7 will be the last smartphone I ever buy. I miss having a 'dumb' phone or at least something that isn't so big and cumbersome and inverts my jeans pocket every time I have to answer the phone.

Some of us want to stay in the 'ecosystem' and not bother with a flagship device. Why is having simple phone functionality so tied to having a hugely expensive device? You have got to be kidding me if you expect me to buy an even larger XR at minimum.

I think your onto something. Apple should make a device that takes an Apple Watch form factor, and makes it capable of folding out into a 4.7'' phone. That would be comparable if not better than the innovation were seeing here.

Well, you don’t need an iris scanner, face scanner, and a fingerprint scanner on a device at the same time. Oh, and they just put more ram in for the sake of the specs game etc etc.
Face scanner for Face Unlock has been present in Samsung Galaxy devices for a long time. Even their mid-range phones have it. Iris scan is several generations old, too. As is fingerprint scan. There are several reasons to have multiple types of security mechanisms. Some people who work with their hands have their fingerprint permanently damaged. Some people may have issues with face unlock, particularly men who change their facial hair. The Iris scan can also be employed separately for the Locked Folder and Files feature. In other words, you can use a pattern or pin for your phone main use, but require an iris scan to access the Locked Folder and Files function, which uses Samsung Knox.

Here's some basic info on Samsung Knox.

There's more out there but it's a lot to read compared to the bite-sized stuff in that article.

For the record Samsung first showed off a curved display 6 years ago. Let it go. Samsung have been working on this for years. Apple cant even make displays, they have to get a third party to make their screens. They have only just started making screens with OLED displays.

Samsung had their own galaxy buds before the AirPods even came out. Samsung were not even the first to do that either.

Flexpai was first though .

I dont see the point. The screen when closed is tiny. You will have to use it open 99% of the time.
4.8" for the external display is larger than the 4.7" of the iPhone 6/7/8.
Nearly $500 overpriced IMO; $1500 would have been good entry price (and still high for a phone even with its specs).
And that weird corner notch lol, just why.
I don't think Samsung expects this phone to sell in any significant numbers. This is more a proof-of-concept product intended to get it out into customers' (and reviewers') hands.

You know, there was a time when Samsung decided to put 'face recognition' in, but it was really poorly done compared to Apples, and I'm sure there were a host of features, even basic fingerprint scanning that was 'packed in' without real testing, even the GPS was a problem... I think Samsung has graduated from that though, a lot of it's features seem to have more polish now, their camera quality or example has been top notch.

We'll have to see how well these new features work like the fingerprint sensor, etc. though I wouldn't be surprised if they have a lot more rigorous testing of their devices compared to their earlier years and reviews will promote how easy those new features are.

I for one am really hoping Samsung does their testing before releasing these new devices. Otherwise Apple will just use this as an excuse for releasing fewer features in the new 2019 iPhone if Samsung's innovation turns out to be poorly implemented and buggy.

That said, I give credit where its due, and Samsung has taken a risk here in an effort to push the industry out of stagnation. Good for them.
It's nice but will be dead on arrival at those prices. They need to cut the price in half.

I doubt the main purpose of this product was to make money. It's a halo product. It doesn't need to sell. It just needs to sell a case to the world that Samsung has taken the mantle of the world's most innovative smartphone company.

Well, that isn't on sale except for developers and not much has surfaced since CES. However, if we use the logic by some members of this site, then it doesn't matter as Samsung's effort is better and therefor Samsung only matter. Royole is also a Chinese owner

I keep hearing about Apple trying to make headway into markets like India and China. If they did make a low-cost *smaller* iPhone, I'm positive this would help rather than making even larger and more expensive units. I can only hope that it will be available to me as well.

Maybe I'm old school, but I would much rather use my Mac for anything other than phone calls and texts.

I'm not impressed by it I'm sure bet it will flop. The screen is too big, ergonomics are bad, too thick, the battery life probably doesn't last and it comes with an useless pen nobody cares about, plus it doesn't even have LCD. I don't give it 6 months before they take it out from the line. I mean who would want to carry such a huge device in their pockets? Can you even reach your fingers around it? I'm sure Apple wouldn't follow this trend of not ergonomic devices.

I assume you are pointing out that some predictions of failure are mistaken, but surely that doesn't mean every prediction of failure is a guarantee of success. After all, there have also been many heavily hyped products that failed, such as the Apple Newton and Google glass, largely because, as in the Fold, the technology was not yet available to make the innovative ideas sufficiently desirable, and this objection does not apply to your example, which incidentally is not an example I predicted would fail, nor one very many others did.

To paraphrase Asimov, to be a mistaken prediction of failure, it is not enough to predict failure.
