Sounds to me that these tags, in the hopes of beating Apple to the market, are a rushed product
Sounds to me like you didn't watch the event or even read the article. Samsung's UWB tags have a later release date.

As for "beating Apple to market" this is Samsung's 3rd pair of tags. The first was way back in 2012.

these are cool, kind of weird that Apple has these ready and they are beaten to market, or is it that they are waiting for someone else to release to figure out the kinks?

In fact... with a partner who works with broken families, often due to domestic abuse... I foresee these types of devices being used by (almost always) men, to track their ex partners, whether simply due to their possessive need to know what their ex is doing, or for much more malignant reasons.

But, they'll also be great to tag things that we are legally allowed to be tracing.
Agree, but please don't do the stereotypical thing and say men are bad and woman are victims.
There are a lot, and I mean a LOT of crazy females out there, and many mean are not taken seriously when they have problems.

It’s a shame Apple didn’t manage to release them before Samsung... they may be reasonable reasons for that but now they airtag will have an aftertaste of a “me too“ product. And even more shamefull because we all have the feeling Samsung wouldn’t have been launching this product if Apple wasn’t working on the airtags...

My guess is that airtags loses a lot of its value when people are not able to travel. As such, it’s not so much that airtags aren’t physically ready for sale much as Apple is waiting for the right narrative surrounding them.

What happened to that big Apple „surprise“ that was supposed to be revealed on the morning show the other day by the way?
It was a nothing burger. If you have noticed, Apple always brings up some product or service whenever a Galaxy S or Galaxy Note is launched.

Technically, it would be Apple and Samsung copying Tile.
But Tile will only file an anti-competitive suit against Apple, even tho Samsung’s was released first.

Lawsuit Judge: “I’m curious why you guys (Tile) are suing Apple, when Samsung’s obviously came out first to market (before Apple) many weeks ago.”

Tile: “That’s simple your honor. Samsung’s implementation is zero threat to us, no one cares about it. But Apple’s airtags product will stand out as the new gold standard, they will do it better than we can ever dream of, eventually making our product irrelevant. We are asking $5 trillion your honor.”

It's not entirely clear why Samsung hasn't adopted UWB for the SmartTags,

Just so they could beat out Apple to the market, who cares if it's a sub-standard product. Honestly, if I were to buy this, it better point me to the exact corner I decided to put my keys at... not a general "in the apartment somewhere". (I am not sure even Air Tags will be able to do that though)

Hopefully this gets Apple to stop dragging their feet and actually release AirTags. I doubt it though.
Oh yeah Apple is dragging their feet. 🙄. They're only busy innovating new M-series and A-series processors, working on three OS's and turning out new products for Samsung to rip them off on.
Just because a company isn't "first" doesn't mean they are dragging their feet. What a stupid notion. Could it be that they are still perfecting the product? See Samsung got theirs out first because they're not busy innovating. When you copy it's easy to be first.

Completely plausible that Samsung caught wind of Apple’s plans and beat them to market with a thrown together product.

Exactly my point. They don't set their own path. They look at what Apple is doing and try to earn a quick buck by being first, whether it's indirectly through brownie PR points or rumors setting the trends thereby increasing demand for a similar product.

Apple is simply looking at what UX they can improve and focus their energy on that. Of course, then they charge the ton for that solution.

Someone already posted already earlier about Samsung connect, circa 2017.

This copying faff is a bit silly.

and I already posted that that's missing the point.

No, not really.

Your point, Samsung are copying Apple.

"whenever someone says "Samsung doesn't copy Apple", just point them to this and a bunch of other examples in the past. Samsung copies Apple. Plain and simple."

The reality is although they were not first, they certainly weren't copying Apple.

Do Samsung copy Apple? Oh no doubt, but not this time.
