If you do the math Google grew by 7.8% and Apple grew by 3.7%. This is strictly smartphone sales. When you compare iOS and Android then that's different cause those include the iPad which everyone knows sells enough for the numbers to actually be around even.

Android is winning! Facts be damned for Android folks:

There is one new feature that I think is interesting. Apparently it uses a sensor to detect if a face is looking at it, in which case it won't put the screen into sleep mode. That's pretty useful, particularly for reading. It might be a nice feature to make it into an iPad. Maybe Samsung plans to use it as a settlement offer? (I.e. give Apple a license on the software patents behind it in exchange for dropping the lawsuits on the Galaxy Tab).

People will buy it, then stop buying it. It's the same with every Android phone ever released. A big month or two then plummet into nothingness...why would anyone expect any different with this phone

exactly these android phones are all the same and they are boring.. they all have silly names and there is a new one every 2 months...

S3 is ugly... has no personality.... here is some advice tko samsung...

1. stop using android make your own mobile OS that is as silky smooth at IOS but as feature full as android
2. Get at least 500,000 apps into your own apps tore that you control like apple.
3. STOP COPYING EVERYTHING APPLE DOES!!!!! MAKE YOUR OWN COOL NOW STUFF THAT WORKS WELL AND EASY
4. SPEND MORE ON THE HARDWARE DESIGN AADN QUALITY OF MATERIALS
5. make the galaxy your only phone and make it perfect as possible and only release 1 per year..

I see, you like Apple and want Samsung be like Apple. But did you know Samsung sells more smart phones than Apple? Maybe not everybody like glass phones? Besides Galaxy phone can't be a copy of iPhone and be ugly at the same time, right?

God, this is like stepping back to the mid 2000s. Plastic, curved, UGLY.
I'm not a fanboy, but this seriously looks bad. Hopefully Apple can provide a 4" iPhone so we're not stuck with this as a 'flagship' 4"+ phone.

This isn't a competition

Competition is good. It pushes competitors to achieve their very best, each going the extra mile to pip the other to the post.

However, I don't think this is competition. It's plagiarism. Samsung aren't bringing anything new to the table, they are just copying everything that Apple does.

Add to that their constant mockery of Apple users in their advertising and the result is that rather than admiring a worthy adversary, I just hate them for being unimaginative, insulting and cheap.

This has real-Workd effects : when shopping for a new TV recently, I actively avoided any Samsung products. They might make the best TVs on the planet for all I know, but I'll still never buy one. Why should I? Apparently, Samsung think that I am an idiot.

Fair enough I say, but this idiot will never buy a Samsung product.

I completly agree, the way they announced it is very cheesy. Human this and human that. Not a bad choice for a phone though.

But I'm sure the phone will be a success, all it needs now is great marketing.

Maybe, Im a bit worried about the marketing by Samsung.

And also, as Virtualball compared the services Samsung launched - its sooo similar to Apple services -> I believe there will be more "patent wars" coming in the near future?

1: I bet you have a Galaxy Note.

I luuuuvvv Android. I bought it because it's cheap and crappy.

2: Look at the picture of the kid holding it...... seriously, you want a phone THAT big and then get all upset when on an APPLE fan site, people like me state how massive the phone is!

I could snap a picture of a two year old holding an iPhone, and it'd look HUGE. Then I could hop on here and type out a post that ends with "lol", or "fail", then add a  to really drive my disdainful dismissal home.

Oh because the iPhone can take 20 pics and select the best one for you and it can also auto-tag based on your social network. Let's not forget that beautiful 4.8 in screen the iPhone has. I also love the offical Apple flip case that was made for the iPhone. All the gesture controls the iPhone was also copied by Samsung.

/sarcasm if it was not obivious

You do know that most people actually prefer Android phones, right? Perhaps they find those Android phones besting Apple products in terms of simplicity of design?

I believe the iPhone outsells every other smartphone on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, so your logic seems a little faulty to me.

"Apple's iPhone 4S is the number-one selling handset at the nation's three largest network operators, outselling all other smartphones combined."

By the way, what are you actually doing here? I am certainly not wasting my time on Android forums when I have little interest in the platform.

You must know that MG Siegler is a known Apple evangelist and a laughing stock of TechCrunch readers.

If Apple sold a top of the line iPhone for $49 to $99 dollar it would likely have a higher market DESPITE being the ONLY manufacturer of iPhones/iOS.

Find us a reputable source where Android customer satisfaction tops the iPhone/iOS. That would be a far truer indicator of which was "preferred" by users.

They do sell cheap phones (2 year old model - fee with a contract). Apple's inability to produce a cheaper model is really puzzling but does not change the fact that Android phones are much more popular.

Good Phone in my opinion. Would rather get the One X, and here's why:
Pentile display, RGBG is not as good as RGB.
Touchwiz makes it look like android 2.3, Sense 4 is actually better this time around.

All IMO ofcourse:)

I made that mistake 2 years ago and bought Samsung TV, the only reason, Im still having it in my living room is that I really dont have time to watch TV so it's like a decoration for past year or so...

NO! I think samsung is the only company in any position to really compete with apple but they make cheap campy hardware that feels and looks cheap... then they ride the android band wagon.. and make boring clone phones..

yes samsung sells more phones cause they make many POS throw away phones that go to folks who cant afford good phones ore dont care about cool greta phones... 2 markets that apple does not want..

These sale numbers are just for one quarter (not to mention that they cover only three wireless providers). If people were replacing their phones one a quarter that would mean something.
