The thread was framed as a desire for praise. From the title to the wording of the post.

Altruism goes out the window when you come looking for kudos.

Actually the thread title was purely descriptive; no framing devices used at all. You're getting bent over your false inference.

The idea that the OP spent $500 for kudos is ridiculous. Even if he wanted praise it doesn't efface the altruism completely.

The money the OP sent is wonderful; seeing your reactionary whining is the gift that keeps on giving. Keep making up a bunch of self-serving standards that decide whether charity counts or not (hint: the people of Japan don't care what you think about this donation).

Then donate the money and be on your way. Don't come looking for a pat on the back.

You call me a troll, yet here is the OP pretending as if he has made the ultimate sacrifice. I have friends and family in Japan, so don't play the troll card on me. But I find the OPs post quite offensive.

I think people need the pat on the back or they won't be donating. OP i am proud of what you're doing. If no one gives credit to anyone, who will be willing to help anymore?

Plenty of people donate their time and money without once asking for - or, in many cases, receiving - recognition. There's no wrong reason to donate to charity - even if you're glory-hogging you're still helping somebody - but people do commit charitable deeds without a thought about what they stand to gain.

good thing OP!

in the modern world people do not appreciate good people. charlie sheen and lindsay lohan rules this modern world, sigh ...

Uh, yeah. That IS the one good part.

It's pretty much the only reason to do it that I can think of, actually. So he came here solely to try to inspire people to donate.

And yet you think that's a bad thing? Sorry, but I don't understand that.

I'm not going to donate $500, but the OP's post just inspired me to donate $10. Please tell me how that's a bad thing.

Clearly, several things I said indicate I think it's a good thing if people end up getting inspired to donate because of his post, so not sure where you're getting that from. Nor do I get where people are getting that we called him a "bad person".

My original post was only to say I understood calderone's post about starting your own thread to tell people you donated instead of getting an iPad seems misplaced or like searching for praise. You are saying he came here solely to inspire donations- but that's the premise some people disagree on. In the end, it doesn't matter- this guy did a good thing, nobody is denying that. If inspiration was his sole reason for posting then great. If not then that's fine too, just kind of strange.

Outstanding!!! But why would you do it with hope not to regret? What could possibly be regrettable? Very commendable and if you feel you may miss it, claim it on taxes. Yes, you most definitely will get it back in 10-fold.

Thumbs up to OP, I'm jealous that I don't have the decency to donate that much but if I had, damn straight I'd want to be praised. That's a week's worth of work to many Americans. People here are arguing about your character, but don't debate, your donation will speak for itself with food, water, and supplies.

guys im not here for praise :p just wanted to maybe give people the idea :)

I was thinking the same thing, that you posted to pass on the idea, not to receive credit.

My compliments.

I will follow by contributing immediately thanks to your example.

I contributed some money also, I think it is good to do what we can to help. It is a little ot, but as long as the money donated actually goes to helping the people there, every little bit ... Watch out for fake scams and make sure you are donating to places, that will help !

Jesus, I am utterly astounded that people can have this reaction to the OP and this thread. When I read the post, the first thing that crossed my mind was - wow, what a great idea. I hope others follow suit or donate what they can. I have already donated some money, but not that much and frankly, that post alone has convinced me I need to do more. Than I read all the pompous, self righteous follows ups and can't fathom how people can have a reaction like that. Seriously, even if the sole intent was to look for a pat on the back, who freaking cares? You think some starving people in Japan give a rat's a$$ why someone donated? Does that somehow buy less food for them? Wow. My wife and I have worked for a couple of years raising money for a local temporary housing shelter for abused kids and I assure we go out of our way to tell everyone we know about it. And you know what, it has helped raise a lot of extra money for them that would not have happened if we hadn't been "attention whores" singing long and loud about it. So to the OP, kudos to you and to all the naysayers criticizing him about it, pray that you are never in need of donations from others because a lot less people would donate if we followed your narrow definition of what is an acceptable way of donating.

OP, I have donated too (10$) because of this thread

Also...I posted thread about the iPhone having Swype..So far it has gotten 4 pages of responses

But I have learned by now I should have put "iPhone is STUPID because of no swype"

Bet I would have gotten 40 pages then Haha.

I find it odd that some people are saying this thread inspired them to donate. Have you all been so glued to the iPad 2 launch that you haven't stopped to watch/read the news? Seeing homes/buildings/cars/roads destroyed and thousands dead/missing/displaced did not move you enough to donate? However this thread did?

seriously, THIS.

And I'm sure if the guy was really looking to inspire people vs get a pat on the back there were far better and more effective outlets to do it... I know what I do and don't do, so I'm not worried about being stuck in a situation where I need charitable donations and there being nobody to donate due to following my logic/example (really?...) Seriously, if you were standing in line for the ipad and you saw one guy get out, put his fists on his hips and annouce "I'm not getting an iPad, iiiii'm donating myyyy money to charity you guys!" (even without the whole "hope I don't regret it" thing), you wouldn't be thinking "not really the place or way to go about it"?? You don't think there would be some people that end up feeling guilty just trying to enjoy their purchase when someone brings that up? I'm not saying that's more important than the people needing help in Japan, but charity is not about bringing attention to yourself or people feeling guilty. There are just better avenues for it, that's all.

Please, everybody please help Japanese people with all that you can, this is the worst disaster I've ever seen to a highly developed nation/economy and their respectable people in the world. I'm astonished by their discipline during the disaster.
