I wish they'd go ahead and give us a release date already! Or at least some info...

I'm starting college next week and going to be needing a Macbook Pro. Can't afford to wait anymore, because all students from my uni require laptops. I don't want to be caught up in buyer's remorse if the new models roll out shortly after, and they are prettier and faster. :(

Those are actually some gorgeous designs.
I am sincerely hoping there is a hard drive based iPod Touch, or at the very least, a 64Gb iPod Touch for cheaper than the current 32Gb.

Heh, thanks.
I think a hard-drive based touch would be ideal. It would essentially replace the iPod classic in the product line, which would be more AppStore revenue for Apple. It makes sense for them to do it.

ipod updates maybe. MacBook, Macbook Pro updates no way. Many students will be buying over the summer months and almost definietly the biggest month for buying laptops will be august. A refresh the month after veryonea bought their MacBooks spells disaster. Apple won't do this, the same thing was said last year and every apple store said the same thing to me.

what they say and what is the facts are two diferent things. That was most likly a sales scam, to take your kind off of the new updates so you'll buy a new machine. Happens all the time in the world. get used to it. ;)

new iphone? please :apple:

what the hell is up with people rolling their eyes for no reason?

I dobut apple will relase a new iphone so soon. Just get the current one and quit complaing. I also dobut they will do this while iphone nano, iphone shuffle etc deal. That rumor was created by some kid who thinks apple will repeet the ipod family name....

Shot in the foot to my mind.

They've missed out on a massive chunk of the market - the "going to college/high school or college/university" group. They've all gone - by now - to buy themselves dell laptops and the like.

Not to say that Dell are a bad company, but Apple should really have taken this into account and released earlier to maximise their potential. Admittedly they've probably negated that with the back to school deal, but it pisses me off a bit that they do it with the old macs in the knowledge that you're getting an iPod to placate the annoyance of buying just before an update.

This is what's going to happen: The Macbook Air gets a very respectable upgrade whereas the Macbook gets dropped for a 13" Macbook Pro.

The iMac's aren't getting upgrades anytime soon. They already use a "mock" Montevnia chipset and would see no gains at all if added to the iMac.

The Mac Mini on the other hand hasn't been updated in over a year, and is due for an entire redesign. There have been rumors about it for the past year.

Does the iMac use SODIMM or just regular DIMM? If it does use SODIMM then 1066Mhz memory would be an upgrade. If it uses regular DIMM than I am not sure why it is stuck with 800Mhz memory.

64GB touch? Not likely as Apple didn't give the iPhone any storage boosts. Plus, isn't the 64GB SSD for the MBA $600? Don't see how they'd offer you an iPod touch for less than $500 when the drive alone to them is valued at $600.

Just another piece of support for September

Was anybody expecting otherwise? All the rumors pointed to September for iPod and Mac refreshes.

I think the event will be a combined Mac/iPod event, with a lot of products being updated at once.

I also think that the Mac will be the centerpiece of the event (with the redesigns), and the iPods will be on the side, relatively speaking.

iTunes 8 / iTunes X / Media Me may also be released at the event. As many are expecting a revamp or a redesign from iTunes 7, Apple may do exactly that, breaking from the 2001 layout of iTunes into something more suited for today's changing media landscape (Mac, iPod, iPhone, :apple: tv). This would also explain why Macs are refreshed at the same event as the iPods.

It's also possible that the Macs could be released the week before the iPod event, as what happened in 2006.

While rumors have primarily focused on new iPod nanos, we've heard whispers that an iPod Touch update is also likely in the same timeframe.
An update? So it's not the significant upgrade previously rumored?

Apple Expo Remix'08 : 17 - 20 sept 2008 in Paris
my guess as the timetable suggests new products :)
Apple isn't attending the Paris expo.

This is pretty exciting!

Anyone predict a MBA refresh anytime?
Probably early next year, whenever Apple/Intel can put updated (1067 MHz FSB) CPUs in there. Apple may also be holding out for the 120 GB HD coming next year.

This is what's going to happen: The Macbook Air gets a very respectable upgrade whereas the Macbook gets dropped for a 13" Macbook Pro.
Then I hope the MacBook Air gets a price drop, but I agree with you on this. I just don't think it'll happen this soon.

64GB touch? Not likely as Apple didn't give the iPhone any storage boosts. Plus, isn't the 64GB SSD for the MBA $600? Don't see how they'd offer you an iPod touch for less than $500 when the drive alone to them is valued at $600.
The iPhone uses one flash chip while the iPod touch has two. So a 64 GB iPod touch is possible with a 32 GB iPhone.

And SSDs aren't the same as flash memory.

Yeah this isn't new information, its just another reminder for people to hold off on iPod or MacBook purchases until after September if they can. Apple is also counting on ppl taking advantage of the Back-to-School rebate to help clear out the current lappy's and iPods.

As mentioned earlier, flash isnt the same as SSD
Plus the fact that it isnt costing that much for Apple to get the memory, the only reason they can charge it is because if people are paying over £1000 for a laptop, then the £300 extra might not make that much difference to them. With the iPod Touch on the other hand, people are only paying £250 or so, therefore £300 would be a significant difference; Apple would lose sales of the higher model in compromise.

With regards to not upgrading the iPhone capacity, I think this is because many iPhone users aren't that likely to have vast amounts of music or video on their phone. Well, not that much to exceed the current maximum of 16Gb. People who have large music collections or want to carry around heaps of videos (such as myself) are more likely to have a seperate iPod.

It ain't a phone, people.

The touch has always been the step child of the iphone. pretty much apple trying to offer the iphone to customers without who don't want a phone contract.
I disagree. At least with the "step child" comment, with its negative connotations.

Honestly, I think you're looking at it all completely backwards. It's an iPod. It's not a phone. Compare it to the iPod lineup and suddenly it's a positive, not a negative. Better yet, compare it it the Zune. Completely destroys it. I wonder when the Zune will be able to surf the web in coffee houses,... not anytime soon, that's for sure.

Comparing it to the next iPod down from it (the iPod Classic) and side from the Classic's massive 160GB hard drive, the Touch trounces the Classic on all fronts. And while not huge, the 32GB Touch is still twice the capacity of even the new iPhone 3G.

While you might point to the lack of mail, weather, maps, notes and stocks initially, a mere $20 puts them all on the device along with 2.0 software that packs in MS Exchange, new Calc, multiple calendars, contacts search, MobileMe support + the new Apps store that let the iPod Touch do pretty much whatever the original iPhone could, except take pictures (which honestly, I don't use for much except take people's pictures to go in the address book. crappy camera).

Sure, it looks a lot like the iPhone - and it does much of the same things now as the phone, but it's iPod.

The best damn iPod there is actually. And it's just about to get better.

I will bet that Apple will be having a big announcement sometime soon. Best Buy is advertising $180 off a computer when you purchase it with iWork '09 and MobileMe. I have not seen iWork advertised anywhere. Also there are many references to a 17" iMac on Best Buy's info about this discount and the back to school promo. Could they be bringing back the 17" iMac to replace the mac mini? This shows the Best Buy ad: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat157400050010&type=category&h=387

Yeah, after all isn't the iPhone merely an iPod Touch with a cell phone glommed on to it, and with less memory? ;)

I think the iPod Touch is a great iPod, especially the 32GB. It's a bit pricey right now, but that's more storage capacity than the iPod 5G. Plus it has app store, better battery life, much bigger screen, Coverflow, etc...

They're both great devices, I chose a Touch because I have no desire to play $30 extra per month for a data plan.

alrught so sorry to sound like a newb or w.e but im about to be a first year college student and of course im going to get a mac, prolly the mbpro 15" but of course there are rumors of this new upgraded model coming out. this would be my first purchase of an apple computer, so would one suggest that i wait until september or wenever it comes out, a good month or so into the school year, or jsut go with the current model already out? thanks

Longtime Best Buy watchers: REAL or FAKE?

Apple does have a 17" iMac, it's just education only. It looks like it applies here.

If you look at the buyer's guide, everything except the 4 month old iMac is ready for replacement. I've never seen so many "Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle" advisory notices. A new ipod and perhaps laptop update isn't going to make the entire line look much better to me. We're pretty much in the doldrums at the moment.

Oi! My thoughts exactly. Apple needs to do a major product line revamp. I'm not talking major redesigns or anything but some minor cosmetic and decent hardware updates would be greatly appreciated and would help me encourage family and friends to migrate to the "new" Apples from their old, decrepit Windows boxes.

But seriously, if they update the MacBook and drop the price a touch I'll be all over that like white on rice and a glass of milk on a paper plate in the hands of an albino during a snowstorm.

I doubt that. I work on a large campus and from what I see the vast majority of students could care less about esoteric (in their opinion) spec upgrades. If a MacBook is good enough for you, then you're not caring about a bump, unless you hang out on Macrumors.

I believe the ipod line is pretty clear by now and i cant really find any useful things to add. They're prolly make an even larger-capacity ipod classic, a widescreen nano (maybe, although i like this one), shuffle maybe gets 4 gb and a click-wheel. As for the touch... i like it just the way it is... but they'll sure have the 64gb version. i have a Touch and i would sure hate it with a plastic back. after all, fingerprints get all over the screen, i wouldnt want them on the back also.
i only ask for one thing: put some volume controls (really tiny) on the side of the ipod touch. thats all.
as for the mac line, i'm reaaaally looking forward to see some improvements in performance and design :)

How about a AM/FM and/or XM radio?

doubt it.

my guess is that those 2 aren't counted because apple isn't counting them in the student promo going on in the stores. this iwork/mobile me thing is likely an extension of the same promo.

i am laughing however because the coupon has a major typo, calling it iwork 09, and there's no such thing as 'mobile me software'. the box is just your activation key. the software is all stuff in the computer already

I did some looking however and the whole thing aint as great as it looks. unless I am reading the coupon wrong if a student walks into best buy buys a macbook black, iwork and mobile me right now, according to the website that's $1679.97-$180=1499.97 (+tax).

but if you go to an Apple store and use the in store student discount plus the current new user MM discount that's $1479 (+tax) AND the apple stores have the ipod rebate and a printer rebate. so basically you end up with those for the cost of the tax which in Cali would be another $33.

so for $1624 you walk out of Best Buy with a laptop, iwork and mobile me. or for $2033 you walk out of Apple with a laptop, iwork, mobile me, an 8gig ipod touch and a printer/scanner and then 1-2 weeks later you have a rebate check for $399 making your grand total $1634. for $10 more I'd rather have the ipod and the printer as well.
