You can see the new Nike watch app in action here (starts at 0:37):

My hope is that the app will be available for all watch owners on Nike+ AW launch day (Oct 28).

Theory: the only app we have so far (Pear) forces the user to choose if they are using the watch for GPS, or the iphone. It should be a simple matter to get the watch to start using it's own GPS if the phone isn't available, but that's not what happens, at least with the 3rd party app. I'm wondering if Watch OS 3 has a bug or something which forces this behaviour. And that is what the other providers (Runkeeper, Strava) are waiting for, the Watch OS 3.1 update which will fix this issue so that the the user doesn't need to decide if they are using the watch or the watch with phone.

Personally .. I would prefer the way it is handled in the Pear app. It prevents the watch from switching to the phones GPS if it happens to get close enough to your phone during a run. Think running laps at a park where you pass by your car and the watch briefly connects to the phone. This happens with the native workout app and it leaves you with inaccurate pace results since the phone is stationary sitting in your car.

I definitely prefer the way that it is presented as an option. Currently I just put my iPhone in airplane mode and it isn't an issue, but shouldn't have to do that in my opinion.

It's strange that in the video it shows the silver Watch with black /volt band but you can only order the back band with the space gray watch ?
Do you think we will be able to pick a different combination at one point?

Do we know yet if the run tracking functionality still works after the Pear 30 day Trial runs out? My trial is still running, guess I'll find out soon. I hoping it does, and that it's only all the other stuff that you lose without paying.

Really finding it difficult to believe that I have had my Series 2 watch for over a month now and there is still only one, yes one (Pear Sports), running app that supports the Series 2 GPS.

I know developers aren't fond of developing for the AW, but at this point I find it a bit ridiculous. What's even worse, is you can't even get a "we're working on it" when you ask some of the major players about the status. The best you seem to get is "we are looking at it".

You would think it would be in the best interest of companies like Strava, RunKeeper, etc. to have an app that worked with the Series 2 sans phone. I would even be fine if they charged a premium for the Series 2 version .. at this point I just want something that works beyond having to use the native Workout app with its self-imposed data jail.

It just doesn't seem like it should be that difficult, or take this long.

I know everyone thinks the Nike Run Club app will support the Series 2 GPS once the Nike version of the AW is shipped .. but I wouldn't be so sure. I don't know if that has ever been definitively stated out loud.

Runkeeper have said 'we're working on it as we speak - stay tuned for this'

RunKeepers blog post from Sept. 13 reads:

"And keep an eye out for even better (GPS-powered!) Runkeeper Apple Watch app over the next couple weeks….we’re already hard at work!"

We are well beyond "a couple of weeks".

This the response I just got from RunKeeper concerning an updated app for the S2:

"Again, our team has been working non-stop updating the Apple Watch integration since Apple's latest releases. We actually found out about the Series 2 release at the same time as our users, so we didn't know about the built in GPS until those announcements were made. Our engineers just got their hands on some Series 2 watches, and we're currently figuring out the best ways to take full advantage of everything the watch has to offer, including the possibility of adding maps to activities tracked with just the Apple Watch. Stay tuned for future builds!"

Disappointing ...

Just played with the Nike Apple Watch at the Nike employee store in Portland. Pretty basic app, but it looks like it records all the functions that you need including elevation, probably based on GPS. The good news, is that you can upload it and it should sync to Strava.

What upload options did you see? Im amazed that they have a strava option as I would have thought they would want you to use their service only. Great news

I didn't see any upload options, as those are usually in the application itself. I only played with the watch. Knowing that it will upload to the Nike plus side, that opens up the opportunity. My assumption is that there are third-party tools at least that can allow you to sync to Strava.

RunGap allows you to import from Nike, then export to about anywhere else. There is no way to export to Strava from the Nike Run Club app directly though. Nike is as ridiculous as Apple when it comes to holding your data captive.

YES! Just tried it with RunGap and everything exported including maps!
Now let all hope this is the week we start seeing some goodies. Who feels confident?

I wish RunGap would be able to get map info from the Workout app... Hopefully we will see some releases soon that use the internal GPS!

Rungap is great, but having to pay $12 a year for it takes a bit of the shine off it. $2.99 for three months... yes I'm happy to pay developers for good work, but I think this is a bit much.

Nike released their app today!!!!!!

Thanks for letting me know! I will download it and try it out this weekend. Hope it works well!

Does anyone know how to get data out of the Nike app? Does RunGap work? I really like RunKeeper and it's services and would love to get the data into it from the Nike app if possible.

Just updated. So, essentially, apart from the Watchfaces and the band, there is no difference between the plain Series 2 and the Nike version.

Now: I just found a setting where you can enter in your Garmin details. does this mean Nike runs appear in Garmin, and vice versa?

I think it's FROM Garmin, not TO.
[doublepost=1477529959][/doublepost]I just had my first run. A few observations:
App has more features than I thought. I was able to turn off the countdaown and start running right away. Voice over works well and is loud. There is Apple Music Integration but i imagine that is with the phone.
My run did not calculate elevation since I ran watch only. Thats a bummer.
Also splits in the NRC app doesn't seem to work.
Run Gap synced all of my Nike runs prior to today, but did not sync todays run. Maybe an update is needed?
NRC puts the run in the Apple Workout app, with SPLITS! But no map.

A good start!

Here are some screenshots for my run....
