I've got this happening to my iPhone 8 Plus (Space Gray) - 64GB - AT&T (iPhone Upgrade Program).

It was the first thing I noticed after getting into my car.

I've also noticed (or at least I think I've noticed it) it happening while listening to my podcasts through the Overcast app using the built-in loud speaker.

Hopefully it's software since it's happening to others who swap out their devices.

Same. Got my phone on Friday and noticed on my first call. Doesn’t do it all the time. My wife called me and it was doing it, ended call and called her back and all fine

Mine has been on every call (6 total) since Friday. I haven't had any luck after calling back or restarting and calling back. It's been the same every time.

Like other's have mentioned I'm sure EFFA will sort this out eventually. Thankfully I'm not always on the phone or this would really drive me crazy.

Several MacRumors readers who purchased Apple's new iPhone 8 Plus have reported hearing intermittent crackling noises while taking calls on the device. MacRumors forum member vask first posted about the issue on Friday and a number of iPhone 8 Plus owners from Australia, the U.S., and across Europe have since contributed to the thread describing similar experiences.

According to iPhone 8 Plus owners, "very annoying" static sounds can sometimes be heard from the handset's earpiece during regular cellular calls, but the issue doesn't occur when using headphones or if speaker phone is enabled, which could indicate a software issue rather than a speaker defect. The audible crackling has also been reported when using FaceTime, increasing suspicions that the problem doesn't lie with network carriers. Forum member Jgpsolo describes the issue like so:

The problem occurs "with or without WiFi calling, with 4G voice (VoLTE) on or off, with phone noise cancelling enabled or disabled under accessibility, and even with third party VoIP apps (like Acrobits Groundwire), with several different carriers," according to forum member ManuCH in Switzerland.

Some users have tried performing a hard reset on their iPhone 8 Plus, with mixed results. Apple's support team has advised some owners to restore their phone to factory settings and set up again via iCloud backup, again with variable results. Other users have even reported the same problem on like-for-like replacement devices after exchanging what they thought were faulty handsets.

Apple is apparently aware of the issue and is currently looking into it. We'll update this article as soon as we know more.

I have AppleCare. So I figure I want to see how this plays out and then I’ll work with Apple on it. I took awhile to set up my phone and I don’t feel like going through that again unless I know for sure this will be resolved when I switch it out.
On another note, I seriously doubt this is software-related. Unfortunately I fear it’s a hardware issue...

Yeah, I just got my iPhone 8 last Friday and I have noticed this static sounds. I am in Florida, not in Australia or Europe, so it seems it's a world wide problem.

I gotta watch this thread closely and see what is up.

Why is Tim Cook being blamed for quality issues? I’m pretty sure Antenneagate happened under Steve Jobs, to name just 1 issue. Humans make these things and humans are not perfect.

I have the static issue on 8 Plus. It’s a really grating intermittent crinkling like tin foil. I just left the Genius Bar. They’re getting reports of this and it is not carrier specific. They offered to replace the phone now (and possibly have the same static), or that in all likelihood there will be a software patch in a week or so that will fix it. ‘It looks like that’s coming down the pike’ according to the Genius guy. If it’s still an issue in 2 weeks come back and they’ll give me a new phone. I opted to wait. It’s probably a perfectly good phone with a software issue.

Yeah I’m waiting. I’ve changed three MacBooks once all to be the same. Each change was a ball ache . Wait it out. Apple are always great at replacements so will just see what happens.

It's probably best to wait it out. Playing the lottery now seems like a waste of time. Hopefully they can issue a software update before my 14 day return window closes.

funny, i had this first happen with the 4s, but there was nothing posted about it on rumors then :)
then everything was ok until the 7. i guess this is happening with the 8 too...

iPhone 8+ on ATT. Have the problem intermittently. Voice memos and music is fine right after call with issue. I believe it is software/carrier issue.

Apple is only increasing the price, not the quality.
Now going to upgrade my phone.

I just came from the Genius Bar and they gave me the option to swap it out immediately or to wait for a patch in a week, most likely. I chose to wait. It’s in the notes that if I return they hand me a new phone.

Then I called Apple Care and they told me that they all have been briefed on the situation and it’s very possible the regular Bugs and Fixes Patch will fix this soon. However, they are well aware and investigating the cause. So while it’s annoying, they’re working on it and one way or another we will be made happy.

It’s interesting that it only effects some of the devices. AppleCare did say I could try a Restore.

you appear to be on top of this but would caution you to have the problem documented with Apple support.

I had one problem that kept reoccuring (cracking sound or no sound with headphone plug on iPhone 6 Plus) I visited the Apple store, they never fixed the issue, and the problem was undocumented. Later I got fed up and finally asked for a repair/replacement only to find out I was now outside of my Applecare coverage. Had I been still on Applecare I would have paid the regular service fee. Since I had not properly documented the issue with Apple Support, they told me I had no choice but to pay for a brand-new iPhone 6 (one month ago)

Thanks

"but the issue doesn't occur when using headphones or if speaker phone is enabled, which could indicate a software issue rather than a speaker defect"

I would have thought this would mean it was more likely to be speaker defect than a software defect.
