iPad Pro just arrived today (yay!)...and without a Smart Keyboard, not exactly sure what to do with it.

Not just because I plan on typing all the time, but because that will serve as my old case for the device.

My solution, though I will probably get the Apple Smart Keyboard at some point, has been the following. It works great as a setup overall:

  • Smart Case protecting the backside
  • Smart Cover protecting the glass and acting as a dual position stand
  • Logitech KEYS To GO ($35 from Best Buy clearance on the RED version)
  • Apple Pencil
  • This Sleeve to hold it all, which includes a slot for the Pencil: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/brentha...blue/9397135.p?id=1219412878575&skuId=9397135
  • And this which I will eventually stick to the Smart Cover to store the pencil when I'm not using the sleeve.
Taken together, this is a light weight, convenient setup that maximizes portability, protection and usefulness. The Keys to Go is small, which means it can even travel easily just resting on top of the iPad, or I may put a magnet on the back of it to make it adhere to the edge of the Smart Cover (essentially replicating the Apple Smart Keyboard for a lot less). That small size makes it a bit more cramped to type on, but I'm pretty good with it and don't find it uncomfortable to use for hour+ sessions.

off topic but since you asked, the logitech keyboard doesn't work that well in my lap either. If I sit with it flat across my thighs it's ok but if I have my feet up on something and try to have it bridge between my thighs and stomach it pushes the back of the unit up and the iPad loses contact with the keyboard via the smart connector. At that point the on screen keyboard comes up sometimes and the physical keyboard definitely stops working. There's a hinge on the back of the case to allow folding the keyboard behind the tablet and the play that allows combined with a not-to-robust attachment between tablet and keyboard makes using it that way a bit frustrating. The SmartKeyboard is worse in that sense but the Logitech is not a cure all for lap use. In either case you can do it but have to keep it pretty flat.

Thanks for the information. I see myself with the Logitech case, the silicon case and the Smart Cover. Maybe the smart keyboard should be an option, but I didn't like the hump when closed.

Good for you. However, I just got my pencil before yesterday by just walking in to a store without "preordering".....I am sure that I will get keyboard as well next week without trusting Apple's great ordering system. Good luck on ur waiting :D

Oh, I ended up getting my Pencil last week by walking into a store and getting lucky, too. :) I keep hoping to get lucky with the keyboard. o_O

The initial assertion that I was addressing was that Apple didn't provide information to people on how/when to get these accessories, but that just wasn't true. There is a mechanism, and a pretty precise one at that. It might not be as fast as most of us would prefer in this specific case, but it doesn't change the fact that they do provide the service and the information despite the claim to the contrary.

I tried a few days with the otherwise pretty cool Microsoft portable folding keyboard. I could not get used to the big space in the middle. It kept slowing me down. Apple business folks called me today and got a smart keyboard in. I bought it and am returning the existing Smart Cover. (I also have the matching case)

In testing at the store, I found the cover works just great as a Smart Cover (you can prop it up high and fold the keyboard out of the way). But if you have the case just folded over the back for general use, the keyboard will kind of flop out. It's better removed entirely for reading etc if you are not needing to prop it up.

Ordered via the Apple Store for Canada and it shows delivery Dec. 30 - Jan 5.

As frustrating as waiting for the Apple Watch was they were bang on with their estimate and I expect this will hold true for this too.

Just ordered a Smart Cover from Best Buy, it'll be here tomorrow. No choice really. The Pro just got here, and like any iPad it needs at least the function of the Smart Cover for propped usage, lap usage, or when not in use at all.

Probably won't be able to return it in 2 weeks or so when the Smart Keyboard gets here, but I'll have to call that a $60 insurance policy for two weeks of iPad safety.

I did the exact same thing.

I just picked-up my Smart Keyboard from the Apple Store in the Westfarms Mall located in Farmington, CT. They had just come in. They had the one I purchased and one other in the back room. No Apple Pencils though.

So...I bought the iPad Pro this weekend and picked it up at the Bethesda Row Apple Store. I also bought the Smart Keyboard, though according to Apple, that won't ship until the week after Christmas.

Should I take that as canon, or is that a 'at worst, it ships then, but it may very well ship sooner..'?

My experience has been that I generally receive the product at the beginning of the ship window. Could be different for thsi one though...

This one is a different animal than other product launches. No one really knows about the keyboard. The pencil is slowly rolling out faster in places, but the keyboard seemingly isn't. I have a Nov 19-27th window and it has yet to leave the "processing" purgatory it is currently in. I am not even sure if it will ship by the end of the window at this rate...

My situation exactly ... I live >1,5 hours from the nearest Apple store (in 3 different directions), and our Best Buy is tiny and seldom gets much of anything before general availability. So I am basically stuck waiting for Apple ... which makes it frustrating to know that while I have waited nearly 2 weeks since my pre-order, there are people a few hours away who can simply walk into a shop and buy the keyboard.

I see where you're coming from but even us fortunate enough to be 10 min from 3 different apple stores can't obtain the keyboard.

Yeah, I live within an hour of approx 5 Apple Stores, and none of them have the keyboard.

I'm headed to a Bestbuy tonight after stopping off to pick up a portfolio at Staples. I intend to buy an iPad Pro cover to protect it (I'm traveling to FL for the holidays), but I may just buy the Logitiech keyboard, and see if that wins me over..and if it does, I'll just cancel my order for the Apple version.

Signed,

Jilted Lover.

Just checked on BB web site and was offered option for overnight or 2 day shipping for keyboard. I pulled the trigger for Wednesday delivery so I guess I will see what happens.

Bestbuy is selling it with next day shipping available (11/24/2015)

How is your shipping so cheap?

Ah well, I just payed $26 to get it to my house tomorrow as I have a day full of meetings Wednesday. I have a disease. I am gonna be sick if an Apple Store calls me tomorrow and says they got mine in... Ah well.

Shipping is usually determined by your zip code t the closest best buy warehouse. Thanks I ordered ken for Wednesday delivery too. It's quite ironic that BB pulled through for all us seekers, while Apple remains limbo....
