Unless you're talking about ProRes RAW or ProRes RAW HQ, but highly doubtful that is what is coming to the phone.
Yeah I keep seeing youtubers say we are getting prores which is like what apple done for photos apple raw and they are wrong prores has that and raw we are not getting the raw one so you can’t edit the colour etc it’s just a better codec

Maybe there is a RAM requirment and 128 GB Pro has less ram (4/6?) than higher storage device (6/8?).
I don't think so but IMO it's the only hardware related possible reason. If ram is same as 256GB, it is an intended software limitation.

I bet it is just a basic upselling tactic exactly why they still sell the watch S3 (to make you clearer the benefits of SE/7 watch model to sell more expansive model du to huge physicial differences you can see in 2sec)

Anyway with this ProRes thing Lighting gets ever more ridiculous escpecially when they are explaining its benefits few minutes before for iPad Mini. It's embarassiing.

It's more a flex phone than a "pro" phone at this stage...
+ cinematic mode capped at 1080p at 30 FPS, that is so bad 😂
It could be simply the storage bandwidth. This happened in previous iDevices, where the higher storage models are showing better storage performance than the baseline model. I think it's basically there are more chips that can read/write at the same time, giving higher data throughput. But this is the first time Apple actually take out a software feature on the lower capacity model, despite it being in the same lineup.

Remember how lower storage M1 iPad Pros have less RAM than higher storage model? Imagine if Apple reduce the software capability of the one with less RAM.

I highly suspect that the engineering team did design the 13Pro software in assumption of having the performance of the 256GB model, but the accounting/marketing team wants better margin, forcing them to keep the baseline at 128GB.

It's an expensive option. I await to see comparisons with the regular iPhone 13, it may not be worth the extra cash for Pro Res video for the majority. It's a shame you need to expand your storage to make full use of it, but understandable too.
In reality, most consumers don't need it. Most people are not even taking advantage of 4K60 or RAW photo capabilities of current iPhones. It's just the principle of a premium $1000 model of a Pro device being software neutered compared to its own higher capacity brother.

Remember when Apple was about convenience and „it just works“ instead of penny pinching?

Tim Cook Apple is selling a Series 3 Watch in 2021 and a Pro iPhone that isn’t really Pro unless you choose a higher storage capacity. Also, imagine transferring 1 TB over USB-2 speed. Sorry, client … give me just one hour to transfer your raw data I shot with my Pro Phone
LOL. Remember how Apple still sold 16GB iPhone 6s when it can do 4K video?
The "just works" Apple is long gone. It's all about upselling and upsizing.

I'm just glad they put 128GB standard on the non Pro phones. Thought they would keep 64GB as base. Maybe next year iPhone 14 Pro will start at 256GB base with no reduced feature.

The fact that both the latest iPad Air and the just announced iPad mini both get high speed wired data transfer through USB-C before any iPhones is just beyond my comprehension.

And no, don’t @ me about Lightning being sufficient -They just announced 4K Pro Res cameras in a 1tb iPhone priced at $1599 but it’s the new cutesy $399 iPad mini that gets a high speed USB-C for its singular camera and 64gb internal storage.. because only the fastest transfer speeds and wide compatibility with all kinds of USB-C drives and devices will suffice for those 64GB?

Wow.

It's a silly decision by Apple. If a user doesn't have enough free space, the app can display a warning. But there's no reason to lock out all 128GB users.
Knowing apple is founded on the philosophy of giving as few options as possible, this is not a surprise.

They just need to push one step further so they could mass manage all iOS devices and remove all settings, citing “making our devices easier to use than ever”.

This is the same Apple that introduced 4k recording with the iPhone 6S and still sell 16GB models.

No excuses for Apple. I bet the engineering team did design the 13Pro with the faster storage in mind. But then the accountant team probably wants to maximize Apple's margin si the need to keep 128GB as base model by sacrificing the feature.

sure, for people that wanted it, and were willing to buy more storage to justify it. that still was not recording in prores, which you're choosing to ignore...for some reason. probably because you still arent even remotely trying to wrap your head around what it means.

go read about bit rates and come back to us later.

The current Apple is all about record breaking revenues, and making money for every single initiatives they have. In terms of lightning, it's about the MFi, which are making Apple a lot of money. There are more iPhones being sold than iPads, and more iPhone users will buy accessories, thus for Apple, they will keep iPhones on lightning as long as possible to milk that MFi license fees. I would guess the accountant see that there's not much MFi revenues from iPads, thus they are more readily to just switch to USB-C.

I used to try to defend Apple for the technical reasons. But nowadays, their motivation is very clear. It's all about revenues. I mean Apple even sacrificed engineering to save cost and make revenue from repairs (flexgate on Macbook Pros). It's no longer about making the best products, it's all about making the most profitable products.

It's kinda like Apple knew exactly who would get over excited and over hype this feature by releasing a video every 20 minutes focusing on nothing but pure speculation about it... It's as bad as the non-stop "It's been 2 days since my last review, is my M1 Mac still good?" repetitive junk.

Apple has truly lost it they droned on about how important Type-C was on the iPad mini to interact with devices and do large data transfers. But it has a weak sauce camera....

Then they talk about high quality massive data usage around filming with iPhone 13 Pro. USB 2.0 transfer rates no Type-C.

"Pro"
« We can’t wait for you to try it »
Well you can’t, but you’ll have to! Cuz I’m not buying

Or worst, the "long term" review of a few months using a phone. :D

So in other words they do not support 4k video recording. Who the hell wrote this article and who forgot to proofread it?
The 128GB model support regular 4K HEVC/H.264 compressed recording. It's just that if you want to use the Prores codec, you are software limited to 1080p resolution.

Basically Apple is "increasing" the price of the 13 Pro. If you are looking for a 13 Pro fully featured, you have to spend at least $1099, not $999.
The $999 128GB model is basically an iPhone 13 "Ultra."

As a company, that's the advantage of having faithful customers. Can't blame Apple. Their business strategy is what every business schools are teaching, and what every other businesses want to achieve.

It's just annoying for us who knows better and see the trick behind the curtain. Worse if you are not in the US. Example, in my country, $1000 won't give me the iPhone 13 Pro, it will just be the regular iPhone 13. Apple's pricing is even more out of whack outside the US.

I wonder what kind of ProRes it is.
LT, HQ, XQ?

But why is this locked to 30fps only.
if they want this to be used by professionals you have to give them 23.98 or 25 the standard framerates used in media.

i wonder if its only the prores function they capped on the 128gb version? Maybe they also capped the RAM on the 128gb vs rest? I hope the 128gb version dont have less RAM than the other versions. that would suck
