Siri is Apple's property, and they would rightfully prevent others from using it on devices other than what Apple intends.

And as someone who bought a Siri-enabled device, I resent freeloaders putting additional traffic on Siri servers, potentially impacting service to those who paid for legitimate access.

What I'm really hoping/wondering, is now that it's becoming more obvious to everyone what should have been obvious in the first place (that you never "Needed" a 4S to use Siri and Apple was just using it to set the new device apart), if they will actually give iPhone 4 users Siri. Once the dust settles on the 4S launches, why not let existing iPhone 4 users use Siri? At this point I'm not upgrading to a 4S and am just waiting for the 5, so I find it really annoying that they don't roll out this software upgrade to me. Same with the iPad 2.

Call me a prick, a flame, a troll, whatever. I'm going to say this anyways.

All you jailbreaking lamers can GTFO of my Siri service.

Plz kthx bai.

I am sick and tired of this irrational attitude Apple users are exhibiting towards this thing. It's like you're all entitled to EVERY goddam software feature that Apple EVER releases post-purchase of your shiny iPhone N (where N is an integer between 1 and infinity).

News flash for all you thick-headed users who can't wrap your brains around it- Apple exists because they produce NEW PRODUCTS with NEW FEATURES. If they never did that- you'd never have incentive to upgrade. You'd never have incentive to buy a new product. Buying their **** is what lets them forge experiences like Siri (I'm well aware the core technology was purchased. They took it and made it usable, then integrated the hell out of it into iOS 5).

I paid $850 for an iPhone 4S 64GB unlocked. Included in that price was the right to use Siri- the right to a guaranteed "Siri Experience", as it were.

If you can't pony up the price for the hardware and software, then stop ****ing things up for those of us who did. I can't wait until the Siri servers are overloaded with iPhone XYZ requests, and Apple either: A) shuts them off, or B) does something irrational that only impacts paying customers.

Then I guess you'll all just sit around and go "Nuah hahaha, look what Apple did to all those paying fanbois! Serves them right for actually PAYING for something!".

Oh well in that case, let's get that update just for you.

Anyway, why an Android user would want to get their hands on Siri is beyond me. I've heard a few of them say their phones have been doing advanced voice recognition for years!

I've played with friends "advanced voice recognition" and it's NOTHING like Siri. Wretchedly slow, mis-recognizes over half the words, and doesn't understand language like Siri does (i.e. "I'm hungry" on Siri gives you restaurants. "I'm hungry" on android gives you "I'm sorry, I don't understand your question.")

Wow. The iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch 4 definitely should have gotten Siri. Apple just wants money and thats why they are just having it for the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch 4G both have A4 which in my opinion is great for Siri.

Wow - what a brilliant observation, that Apple wants money. That greedy "for profit" business.

Well, I didn't used to think so... But after seeing it perform perfectly on an i4 (by @stroughtonsmith) I'm not so sure...

Applidium, the developers who brought the open source video player VLC to the App Store only to have it pulled over licensing issues, have announced that they have reverse engineered the protocol used to allow Siri to communicate with Apple's servers.

I suppose that part of the purchase price of an iPhone 4S covers Apple's cost for running the servers for Siri. Anyone who hacks into Apple's servers to use them without having paid for the service could find themselves in some serious legal trouble.

Yet another useless hack that nobody can use. What's the point of these "front page" articles? They belong in the techie-nerd forum.

Is anyone shocked that Apple validates the device to ensure it's "allowed" to use Siri services?

Why? Apple spent a few dollars buying/modifying Siri and a lot of dollars with their data farm so they should validate users. If it weren't for wankers spoofing iPhones to steal the capabilities then Apple wouldn't have to protect the IP.

(Why isn't "wanker" in my dictionary? WTF?)

ya i tested it out in an AT&T store, didn't work as well as the google version it couldn't connect to the server, then it kept lagging and doing the wrong thing.

People who make silly claims like this are easily dismissed out of hand. It shows complete ignorance to what Siri actually is. It’s akin to comparing two car models and concluding Shell gasoline is better than Exxon.

Phoneme segmentation, what you are referring to, is only one part of Siri and the majority of it is handled by Nuance, though Siri has significant “helpers” in order to be less pedantic. Google doesn’t have a competing product. No one has a competing product yet, the first Zypr products outside of Pioneer won’t start appearing for another 6-12 months and will be nowhere near as integrated as Siri. Zypr wil never be as integrated as Siri either in terms of stand alone products.

Very nice piece of detective work, and an interesting read.

Of course, they're right...Apple will change and/or further encrypt the data exchange so it stays private. No way Apple will let Siri stay this way for long.

This would break Siri for EVERYONE, forcing upgrades on people. To what? Have it ripped again, 1 month later? Apple would be best off doing nothing, as the vast majority of consumers dont know and dont care about this.

Here's a list for you and those of us who neglect to mention them:

-Siri
-8 megapixel camera with vastly improved optics. Quality is absolutely outstanding. I am a pro-photographer, I use Nikon and Canon DSLRs, I shoot films on the RED and I can tell you the iPhone 4S camera is far from mediocre. 1080p video on a camera that does not look like $#!T, AND almost no color noise in well-lit photos. Amazing and worth the upgrade for me.
-A5 Chip, dual core processor. Talk to anyone who games on their iPhone, talk to me who uses the Brushes app and other creative tools. This particular upgrade makes Brushes, Games, and productivity apps run smoothly, and when I'm digital painting on my phone, I don't want the cpu to hiccup.
-improved antennae design. I get 1 more bar everywhere I got less than 5 bars with my iPhone 4. It makes the difference.
-Bluetooth 4.0.

And lets talk about the design a little. Stainless steel. Last time I checked, stainless steel is stronger than cheapo plastics. Glass. Beautiful, reflective, smooth, polished glass. My finger glides across it like a puck on ice. Used the Droid Bionic and Droid charge (Friends). It was like touching sandpaper with a burn wound.

Cheers.

Sorry, i just had to ask. In what way does the strength of stainless steel help for the lack thereof in the glass? Basically, you are pitching water repellent umbrellas, sporting holes like the very best of swiss cheeses.

But yes, the device is indeed appealing to the eye. N9 is growing on me, though. The inner hipster in me almost make me want to buy one - but i've never been big on throwing money down the drain.

This is standard Apple operating procedure.... The ideal experience is on the 4S with the "raise to speak" feature with the new proximity sensor that is "always on" (providing the screen is on). Supposedly the quality of the microphone matters too. Further, Apple wants to differentiate its devices.

I think that Apple could at least offer the dictation keyboard part of Siri to the iPod and iPad (1 and 2) without losing too much differentiation.

Maybe they're saving it for iPad 2s?

I like to school the apple sheep on why their products are illogical, overpriced, and over hyped compared to the competitors.

Having a few clueless idiots around can be marvelously entertaining. And being able to dictate this post lots of fun.

The only thing iPhone 4s has that the 4 didn't is siri... of course apple is lame and won't let anyone else have siri they want you to just keep paying the apple tax on a two year old product that is slower, smaller, cheaper, and more fragile then the competition.

Nice job ignoring the antenna redesign, new processor, substantially upgraded camera system, and entirely new internals. Does it hurt to lie so much?

Stop feeding the trolls!

Please stop driving the conversation down to where the troll wants it... ok? Just ignore him... don't quote him... don't feed him...

Well I had hopes that Applidium would resolve the VLC licensing issues so they could continue to support the VLC player app for iOS but it looks like they have been too busy trying to get their iOS developer license revoked by apple with this BS

1) Should be as simple as a firmware-update.
2) Is that the Apple term for fragmentation?

Please stop feeding the troll. His username is androidfan for pete's sake and he's on a Mac forum. He's just trying to piss you all off for his own entertainment. And he's succeeding. Just ignore the pathetic troll. Do you honestly think he's going to listen to your rebuttals and say "Oh I see now how wrong I was. Sorry about that".

When the 4S was introduced with Siri as a feature everybody bitched and moaned about how stupid and useless it was gonna be!! Exactly 1 month later everybody and their mothers want Siri on their phones!! Like I said before....you want Siri?? BUY A F****N 4S!!!!!!!!
