Whoever first thought that this creepy surveillance stuff should be mainstream , should be covered in gasoline and burned to death. It's nerd-creep level ABSURD. Some things just should not exist. I get the Go-Pro, but this , just no.

Maybe just a wee tad on the extreme side. Could we maybe settle on and arrange for a good kick in the arse :D

Reminds me of how everyone thought Google Glass was going to succeed.

Apple believs in augmented reality so I wouldn't be surprised if they made a pair of glasses within 5 years.

That screams chick repellent. Cameras mounted on glasses just don't look good.

Yet he is with Miranda Kerr.. I sure he didn't wore the glasses on the first date though.

Apple loves the different cases for iPhone, iPad and now the Watch bands. Glasses are really a fashion item with literally billions of combinations and prices from $1 to $10000 for a pair even without corrective lenses.

Some people even wear ugly as **** glasses just for their identity. It's not hard seeing Apple join in with a product here. Throw in some Siri smarts, two cameras and let the iPhone be the brains for identifying people, places, moments, dangerous situations and so on.

Google glass was cool but a bit to early and I just can't see myself speaking to the glasses. If they where more passive and just needed a command now or then it would be nice.

However, I got laser surgery a couple of years ago because I hated glasses so I find it hard to wear a pair again. It would really have to be awesome hardware, incredibly light and super useful in day to day life.

These are far more unobtrusive than Google Glass so are sure to be used by a lot of snoopers, paedos, voyeurs and the like.
I predict that it won't be long before some parent catches someone filming his kids with these and takes the law into their own hands.
Then public places everywhere will ban them 'for the sake of the children'.
Didn't Snapchat not stop and think of the consequences of putting this thing out there? Wait until the lawsuits hit them and they won't last very long.
A bad idea from the outset.

Spy glasses have been avaiable for long time. Check amazon. The more expensive ones are used a lot in investigative journalism. I expect voyeurs, pedophiles would choose one of them rather than this snapchat product.

"The video is recorded in a circular format, as Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel argues that the square and rectangle form that photos and videos currently come in are a vestige of early photos being printed on paper."

Um yeah, because here in 2016 the devices we use to view photos are all round... That's a very strange bit of logic from Mr. Spiegel.
I presume he is making the point that our eyes do not send rectangular images to our brain. Peripheral vision does have 90-degree corners.

lol.. wearing these down the street.

They just want to compliment their app.... now u can record 10 seconds clips everywhere u go.

(except u still need a phone with you to post)..

oh well..

My opinion only, but they look pretty foolish.

Stay tuned.

Yeah, but obviously when Apple do make them, they will be done properly. Be very stylish, offer great functionality and be completely indispensable in everyday life. Yeah thou we shalt sing the praises of thee holy AppleVision™.

there is no market for smart glasses except maybe for military/police use

There is a huge market for augmented reality. Not only for law enforcement and military. Also, they have had body cameras and augmented reality for 20 years. I'm sure a fighter pilot would never go without again.

That we aren't using them yet is because of the bulk. You would look ridiculous wearing a 5 kg helmet and a backpack with the cpu/gpu and battery, walking down the street.

Imagine if one day (almost) everyone wears spectacles similar to these - if everyone's recording videos - who are we recording them for?

Who are you taking photos and videos for today? Yourself I guess?

I think this will be more of a passive system at first, always on video that empties its buffer after some minutes. If you find out that you want to save the footage or snag a picture you just tell the system. Like after a car accident, skiing downhill or seeing someone trip hilariously. Save it and go on with the day.

With all the AI work being done today it's not unthinkable that this will be done by itself. Understanding situations and people that you want pictures of. Go to your kids birthdays and its all saved for later, with highlights picked out by itself, like the awesome lego set your kid opens or when they blow out the candles.

Black Mirror
"Black Mirror" is excellent and thought-provoking. Charlie Brooker has been making interesting television for many years.

It would appear that in 5 years we'll have contact lenses with these and other functions.

Nah, it's bad until someone, anyone makes it good. These are just, well, scabby dobber (feel free to google :D) is my first thought looking at that photo, other than people will finally legitimately be able to call you four eyes :p

Smart glasses will only take off when you can read on them like an autocue and the camera's are pretty much invisible. You would also need a more intuitive way of using them, for example following the motion of your eyes and very little need to actually touch them or the frames. For these reasons I'm not sure our current tech is anywhere ready enough.

Not only this but many places have strict laws on recording capabilities, which make them difficult from a privacy point.

Only records 10 seconds of video with each tap - what a giant pain.

If the camera in a smartphone can be as small as they are, how has nobody come up with glasses with a camera that small that look unidentifiable instead of being a giant eyesore? ;)

I got these beginning of the year. They were awesome on the roller coasters and rides at Disney with the family. http://www.pivothead.com/smart/

While this is intended for the Snapchat generation, I can't help but imagine a more mainstream application for something like this.

Google Glass was too early for its time but its time may be coming. A pair of glasses that records everything that you see while wearing them is something that could exist in an era of unlimited storage which cloud computing will inevitably lead to. Artificial intelligence able to recognize and index objects, moments and people would make it possible to search our lives for memories. "Show me that time when I first noticed my wife walking out of Macy's".

There's a privacy concern that is gradually fading away as the generation that Spectacles was built for have grown up expecting cameras everywhere and not only not caring that they're being filmed but craving it. Older folks will hate it but the world will no longer be built for them.
There is a sci-fi TV show Black Mirror where this is the future. It's interteresting and explores a lot of the implications. The episode is slightly ruined by the main finding out his wife is a skank but blames the technology for ruining his life instead of his wife being a cheating skank, but overall very cool future exploration.

Sorry, I'm not into round videos. Even hate vertical videos that they show on the news.
Vertical videos are the worst. If my wife takes them I delete them without looking at them. They are the worst. Turn the dang camera people. Real vision has dramatically more lateral vision than vertical.

A land of guns and shooting people America is and you want to wear a set of the these glasses. Good luck with that as you may want to pick the place you what to be put to rest.
Lol. Ok buddy. That's America. Constant shooting and the Wild West. Just stay out of Chicago and Detroit and a few other big cities and you will be pretty safe.

This is just so effing stupid and makes me figuratively weap for our future.

I truly think social media has turned into a net negative and things like this sure help cement that.

Social Media are the new TV... And I stopped watching TV around 18 years ago and never missed it. Quite the opposite: It totally annoys me when I come to a place where a TV is running. By TV, however, I mean regular TV programs - I still like watching good series and movies. But for that you don't need a TV receiver.

Social Media is another thing I avoid like the plague. It's just additional useless noise on a planet that's already too loud. You just don't miss anything when you don't use FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn and all the other related useless services. The Internet was a nicer and more interesting place before social media took it over like lower class and intellectually undemanding programs and shows took over TV. These days, when you are forced to watch TV, you literally feel the higher functions of your brain switch off bit by bit. Social media on the Internet is no different.
