Actually, I think you will need a signature. Indirect means you will be able to pre-sign for the shipment online. Direct requires a person to be there to sign for it.

Wait until tomorrow to see if you get it. I dont think Apple has handled this poorly at all. Everyone just wishes they knew everything. If everyone wasnt so paranoid, they would take a step back and realize that Apple originally said shipping September 2009. Then they officially announced "Shipping August 28th" (Which you should be happy about) and now MOST people are getting emails saying it'll be overnighted to them tomorrow (The others may or may not receive them tomorrow, but we dont know yet and therefore cannot complain yet).
perhaps but seeing how the retail version is 10A432, guess I could technically download it since I paid for it. Im tempted to but have not violated copyright law before....slippery slope I say.
Mine still says not shipped, but according to Apple rep. I should have it tomorrow as they are sending them overnight. I ordered mine on Aug 9th.
I ordered the family pack here in Germany on the 24th and it was shipped today. I expect to get it within the next few days. 
Ok. I decided to cancel my order at the online Dutch Apple Store. I was able to cancel it, since nothing was shipped yet, but what about my payment? Is Apple going to give me my money back or is it not that easy.
Also, I just called my local Apple Reseller, and they said they had plenty Snow Leopards. I was put on the reservation list, and I can pick my order up tomorrow. Which is, in 12.5 hours.

Have faith man! 2 years ago, I was afraid that it wasn't going to ship in time, but they over-nighted it at no extra cost to me and I got it on the 26th.
Also, they may have already shipped your order, but the status just hasn't updated yet.
Then there hope! I just moved to a new city to study and I have nothing to do really, so I was looking forward to play with SL over the weekend

I ordered via the up to date program Tuesday morning, Apple order status says Ships by August 28th still :/ any hope for the UTD peoples?

Anyway...
The consensus seems to be that the discs are being overnighted and some have already received tracking numbers. It seems that Apple may not be updating the shipping status in real time but have confirmed that the 28th is the RECEIVE date for U.S. customers. Several people have called in. I hope this is the case.
Also, several people have mentioned that the exact same thing happened when Leopard was released and that it arrived at their door on release day without shipment notification. So I'm hoping that mine arrives tomorrow in time for the weekend.

Not looking good for us. I think the up to date people get pushed aside for the new orders, which is kind of crappy considering we recently spent at least $1,000 on a new computer from Apple. Mine still says Ships by Aug 28 as well. I am located in CA and I ordered in June, I don't know if that makes any difference but it might.
