I'm really irked about the fact that you can't order online, and MUST activate in-store at either an Apple store or an AT&T store. Of course we all know its to prevent people from jailbreaking it and using it on any network they want (say T_Mobile in the US). Ya know, that should REALLY tell AT&T something. People were and are willing to take their brand new, expensive device and subject it to potentially risky software hacking, just to get away from their horrible network.

So because AT&T decided to just recently upgrade their network to 3g to support more users, the end customer pays for it an extra $10.00 a month on the data plan. At least the CEO can finally buy that second vacation home.

Screw AT&T
and their monopolistic cronies. If I buy a 3g iPhone I'll wait until someone's figured out a way to jailbreak it, and use it on the much more affordable and hassle-free T-Mobile network.

I'm not disappointed in the hardware, since we pretty much knew what was coming. There are a few software features that I'd have liked, but nothing major.

What is really disappointing is that actually increased the total price of the phone while presenting it as some sort of huge discount. An additional $15 a month for an equivalent data plan over 24 months is huge. I expect Apple stuff to be expensive, but I think it's somewhat insulting to raise the price and brag about how much they lowered the price. They should have been upfront with the fact that the cost was moving from up-front to monthly.

..........what don't people understand about the fact that APPLE DOES NOT CONTROL AT&T's PLANS????

All I wanted anyways was a 16GB iPhone with GPS so I'm as happy as can be, and for $300! The wait sucks though.

Guess what? The GPS that you are getting with your iPhone is not a real GPS system. The 3G iPhone does not have GPS chip hardware. What it has is called "ASSISTED GPS." Meaning the cell towers and wifi will still triangulate your position and and pin point you and we all know that these are way off. The only new thing you get is the dumb needle moving with you, but even then the ***** is stil wrong and is not spot on.

I called AT&T rep up right after the keynote finished and asked him about the data plans. He said, everything is going to be the same, no difference. I asked him if GPS was free and he said, he is not sure but they might charge $9.99 a month extra for that. Then I call my local AT&T store and talked to the manager and I asked if the GPS was free. His reply was that its not a real GPS, its "assited GPS" and then he explained it all to me. Even if you go to iPhone website, it says "ASSISTED."

It sucks for people who sold their iPhones, knowing that we who have not will most likely get the "assited GPS" in the 2.0 upgrade, since its not a hardware, but a software change. The only real difference is 3G and that can be remedied.

So no "real" gps. No copy paste. So the only new thing is 3g? Is the back shiny plastic or like the dull plastic on a blackjack or the bottom of the current phone? Also is the screen the same glass non scratchable?? Ahhhh? I need answers the keynote was so vague!

We all know 32GB (and beyond) iPhones will come eventually, maybe before the end of this year even. So in the meantime, I'll be happy enough with my first gen 8GB iPhone running the new 2.0 software and available 3rd party apps. I'll seriously look into upgrading to the 3G model once a 32GB model comes along. I'll be surprised if it doesn't happen within the next 6 months, or certainly by MWSF 2009 anyway.

With a cracked screen, I am trying to figure out if its worth getting a new one, or just getting mine replaced. Any suggestions?

Actually, it is real GPS. It only does the tower and wi-fi triangulation if it doesn't have a line of site to the satellites.

You can read about it on Apple's website:

A receiver estimates the distance to GPS satellites based on the time it takes for signals to reach it, then uses that information to identify its location. But the A-GPS (Assisted GPS) solution on iPhone 3G goes a step further, using a unique approach to find the closest satellites and more quickly identify your position

If GPS is available, iPhone displays a blue GPS indicator. But if you’re inside — without a clear line of sight to a GPS satellite — iPhone finds you via Wi-Fi. If you’re not in range of a Wi-Fi hot spot, iPhone finds you using cellular towers. And the size of a location circle tells you how accurately iPhone is able to calculate that location: The smaller the circle, the more accurate the location.

sooooo.....same iphone 9pretty much) for 200 bucks.....i can deal with that,, 2 year contract hmmmm rogers or fido,, ia m with thema laready soooo ic an deal with that full carrier support so no more jailbrakeing BS for me i liek it i like it..no dissapointment here

Copy/paste is software - if it's not on the iPhone it will be either via upgrade or a free or paid for app. As long as something isn't hardware related - it's changeable and obtainable.

I think it's the fact that the money is coming from their pockets regardless of who set the prices. Apple has leaned on many companies in the past(see iTunes music and videos), why not exert a little more of that pressure and keep the 3G data package at $20? I don't think I'll be using any more data at 3G speeds, just doing it a lot quicker. It's a decision I've yet to make:

Pay the $30 for 3G plan
or
just pop in my current SIM and disable 3G on the new iPhone for the remainder of my contract

I suppose AppT&Tle will decide this one for me depending on how strict the "in-store" activation requirement is, I mean what about all those people wanting to purchase one as a gift for someone else?

Please ignore kuckiemonsta

He thinks after talking to a dumb AT&T rep and only on his 2nd post, he knows what he is talking about.

If i had an Edge phone, i'd be happy that i didn't have to buy a new phone. 3G is still limited from what i hear,
:)

Really? what did you hear? I use it all the time. It may be limited (everything has a limit, I suppose) but it still crushes/destroys Edge.

As many others have said, assisted GPS *is* real GPS *plus* triangulation. If you lose contact with the GPS satellite, the phone can fall back on triangulation.

The current iPhone supports triangulation only, which is not GPS. The new iPhone 3G has GPS + triangulation, which is called assisted GPS, or A-GPS.

From Wikipedia:

Conventional GPS has difficulty providing reliable positions in poor signal conditions. For example when surrounded by tall buildings (as a result of multipath), or when the satellite signals are weakened by being indoors or under trees. Some newer receivers are better at handling these situations.

In addition, when first turned on in these conditions, some non-assisted GPS units may not be able to download the almanac and ephemeris information from the GPS satellites, rendering them unable to function until a clear signal can be received continuously for up to one minute.

An A-GPS receiver can address these problems in several ways, using an Assistance Server:

The Assistance Server can locate the phone roughly by what cell site it is connected to on the cellular network.

The Assistance Server has a good satellite signal, and lots of computation power, so it can compare fragmentary signals relayed to it by cell phones, with the satellite signal it receives directly, and then inform the cell phone or emergency services of the cell phone's position.

It can supply orbital data for the GPS satellites to the cell phone, enabling the cell phone to lock to the satellites when it otherwise could not, and autonomously calculate its position.

By having accurate, surveyed coordinates for the cell site towers, it can have better knowledge of ionospheric conditions and other errors affecting the GPS signal than the cell phone alone, enabling more precise calculation of position. (See also Wide Area Augmentation System)

Yeah, umm... How about... NO.

Maybe you should read up a bit on it before making such asinine statements that people are actually taking to heart. Your lack of knowledge has done nothing but make other people think there won't be GPS, when there will. Good job.

Assisted GPS is still hardware, and it still uses satellites to obtain position. If it is not in sight of a satellite, it will then revert to cellular and WiFi signals to help it triangulate where it is. Outdoors, and when driving, you will find out where you are to within 3 meters or less. Inside, when the satellite signal is lost, the range MAY increase to several hundred meters, or it may stay relatively accurate. No matter what though, it is more accurate than the current "solution" used by the Gen 1 iPhone. (distance comments are obviously an estimate)

Here is a link to Apple's website to help you understand just how WRONG you are.

Just so you know, Randall already has several vacation homes, an OC3 connection running to his house, access to a corporate private jet to get to his vacation homes, etc...(honestly)

AT&T definitely should not get away with changing rates like this without a little bad PR. At least include the 200 SMS package with that $30 data plan. Now...if a developer can make an app that sends SMS through the UNLIMITED data plan instead of using SMS, and an online SMS mailbox if you will...that would be the way to go.

I'm sad about plastic back. Hopefully invisible shield is available right away.

Everything else is just fine, capacity will probably get bumped to 32gb sometime in the not so distant future.

Just sad that Steve is letting ATT hold the ball in their court. Steve is more whipped than I ever could have foretold.

Oh Steve...grow a pair (re-grow) and fight a little for your army.

To answer the thread's title/question: very.

Lame. 3G and GPS are added, features that were standard on phones approaching the cost of iPhones for years are finally added. And a new white one.

/crickets

That's it? Really?

I'd be happy if they sold one not on contract for full price....in canada.

The crazy prices you yanks pay is gonna be a bargain compared to here.

I am definitely disappointed. I was hoping for Flash playback, better camera and MMS....that LG Vu is looking mighty sweet!

Please no, I just returned one I bought. After using iPhone, nothing satisfies quite the same.

I am really not that disappointed. If Apple released a product with this much hype, then there has to be something good about (or else they wouldn't have done so). I trust Apple and their products.

I personally can't wait to get my 3G!
