Get laughed at by the people who didn't sell their iPhones.

Did I call it or what? This was my response to a "What will you do if Apple 'shafts' consumers by not releasing a new iPhone very close to 6/9/08:

I will laugh uncontrollably.

And from the sounds of it, the current gen iPhones may only get a little more valuable, or at the very least retain their value a lot longer than most would assume.

8GB iPhone - $399
Going crazy but deciding to keep it and then watching Steve drop a bomb at the WDC - Priceless
:D

Spoke too soon (post #162). The at&t mothership just released that the iPhone 3G will require IN STORE activation (Apple Store or at&t retail). U.S. phones are subsidized by at&t so they're not letting them out of their sight without a contract in hand.

Guess I'm hanging on to my first gen on T-Mobile for the foreseeable future.

How would you do that at the Apple store? Buy it at Apple, and truck it down to an AT&T store? Whatever I have to do.

3G and GPS is not worth my time either; even less for the $10 data premium.

I mean, if I was going to high school for another year I would think pretty heavily about it, I used to walk home for 20 minutes a day without WiFi so 3G would make sense - next year it doesn't.

Besides, Apple is probably going to release a iPhone WiMax next year or something... I can wait :p

I will probably keep my iPhone 1 and not get the 3G also. Edge speeds are fine for me and I really don't need the GPS. I thought about getting the 3G and giving my iPhone 1 to my daughter, but the more I think about it, I'll probably just keep what I have. Now if I didn't have an iPhone already it would be a completely different matter.

Yes, so it will be $40 for your line on the family plan. With the iPhone right now, its $30, and normally, it would just be $10.

Lovely, it's just me and my wife, so I'd be primary and her line wouldn't cost anything.

Looking at $95ish.

If you primarily use the iPhone as a phone / music player, or in an area with a huge amount of wifi, there is no need to upgrade your handset, if you use the net all the time there is an obvious need to upgrade, that's it. The GPS is a nice plus, but it doesn't make or break, and seeing as so far no phone actually does GPS well I'm not expecting much from iPhone 3G's, although it could be a surprise. Even with this announcement the original iPhone could MORE than satisfy your commands, it's only those earlier adopters who are gadget-junkies, those who found their data use through the roof, and those patient enough to wait, or had to wait that will get the new one, a new phone doesn't make the previous obsolete.

Extremely dissapointed.

GPS is a waste - learn to figure out where you are on a map without having a sattelite/cell tower help you.

Nothing about this phone stands out except 3G

The 2 most important things would have been 32GB and 5mpx camera (front end camera isnt too common thus not a priority)

Also waiting till July 11th is stupid. (My T-mobile contract runs out in August - so if it came out today i was just gonna bite the bullet and take the cancellation fee), now i gotta wait till mid August.

Also No Flash is a very important suck factor - since the most incredible things on the internet are created with flash. (www.thefwa.com)

well i do not have an iphone and well i thought I would be getting one and now i am on the fence about it. No copy paste, for one, thats an easy fix, no mms and it does not make sense to have a 8 or 16 gig phone and now start releasing all these new apps that have to take up room. so why no 32? also yes even though a better cam is not a big deal to me, it could have been improved. also no video. I am also a little worried about at&t i mean i am with alltel and i have one year left on the contract and well i actually thought about paying the 200 to get out and switch but it just does not seem worth it. I mean at&t are putting up the prices of the data plan and all . its not looking all that great. i will wait and see what happens.

Everyone is so upset and disappointed with a company that never completely satisfies its customers anyway.

The main concerns of the first iphone were the fact that it wasnt 3g and there was no GPS. As time went on people had more time to compare the iphone to others and think on more features that could be added. 3g and GPS are both on the new version but people are still crying.

You have allowed these analyst and liars to fill your heads up with RUMORS. For some reason I guess you expected all these features to be added. So dont blame Apple, blame yourselves for believing everything you read. I myself am pleased with the new 3G version. what the phone doesnt provide now, can later be handled through software updates for the most part. How many other phones have video chat anyway?!! The one thing that bothers me though is a lack of video recording, but for some reason, I feel like Apple has indeed at least added the components to later add it through a software update. More than likely not though. Who knows.

Its just soooo funny reading comments that you guys leave though. Keep em coming!!!!!!

So true.. And why would any company for that matter, feed you the meal 1st, when there are appetizers:D Mo Money Mo Money

This device, along with the other changes that will benefit all iphones, will lead to huge unit sales. I don't know enough about their margins, but these things are going to sell through the roof in my opinion.

It does not please everybody, but I think they have found a great balance of enough new hardware features for new buyers and upgraders, but not so much that existing iphone owners are too pissed off, and they give existing owners the same software upgrades. The price point is now in the territory where many of us will probably just plan on buying a new one every year.

Some of the new wannabe alternative devices are really pretty cool. Some have a little bit better features, but when I have played around with them... they just don't do it. I am an admitted Mac fan boy though.

The Mobile Me and Enterprise stuff is huge. They really are eliminating the reason for not buying an iPhone, but leaving enough room for the next one to provide the next upgrade (video conferencing, 32GB, etc).

I think they nailed it. Ugh, July 11th... hurry up.

I have an iPod touch and I've been getting kinda jealous... I want an iPhone.

I want to sell my touch and buy whichever iPhone will be cheaper (how much do first-gens go for on eBay?)

but, could I get the iPhone without phone/text and 3G/EDGE service? it may sound weird but I don't want or need either of them. plus I can't afford em.

I have wi-fi at my house which is about the only place I use my touch, and with the upcoming 2.0, I just want built-in speakers!!! I have a crap pair of external speakers for my touch and I don't think I could stand using them for games or stuff like that... even headphones annoy me.

yep I'm weird but that's my opinion!

A big reason to upgrade might be to upgrade to 16gb if you currently have the 8gb.

With the music, movies, and podcasts I like to take with me, I'm always near my 8gb limit. With the app store coming, 8gb is just not enough space for my needs. So even without the 3G and GPS, I'd probably end up upgrading for more space. The new features, and lower price just make it a no-brainer for me.

The GPS is a nice plus, but it doesn't make or break, and seeing as so far no phone actually does GPS well I'm not expecting much from iPhone 3G's, although it could be a surprise.

Actually I think that the GPS could be used pretty effectively on the iPhone just because of the app support, look at that location-based social network that they were demoing and you can see where the GPS could be used.

But still, Apple is going to have a hard time convincing people that the iPhone is affordable when the voice and data starts (including data) at $80/mo including taxes.

The OP I quoted never said adobe, and it was next to or directly under a camera spec. I seriously doubt he was talking about the web based flash, given context.

Hmm. Too many noobs. I really wish MR gets back to good old days of pre-iPhone, pre-intel era.

Based on everything I'd read, the update today is EXACTLY what I was expecting.

You all read the same rumor sites I do. What caused you to expect more?

If today disappointed you I think it's time for you to realize that the problem is you and your strange fantasies. You can't blame Apple for that.
