A very minimal upgrade if you think about it
No really, how are you guys not disappointed? Do you love Apple so much that you would allow them to continue to lag behind in such basic features such as video recording and voice-dialing? 3G and GPS were something that a $499 first generation iphone supposed to have. We all gave Apple a break on that because it was their "first product in the market" and the fact that they pioneered touch screen and forced the industry to focus on interface. Now that competitors are catching up in those areas and the most Apple can offer on its second generation iphone is something that should've been on the first generation one?
People aren't disappointed for the lack of innovative features. They are disappointed with Apple not providing them with something as basic as video recording, voice-dialing, copy and paste, etc.
I agree totally. The further I get from the RDF, the more underwhelmed I am about this phone.
I am an Apple user since before OS X and a big supporter, but you really have to be drinking the Kool-Aid to say this new iPhone is anything other than a
slight improvement on the original.
It's a minor hardware upgrade, and to non-corporate users a minor software update, period. It's also
more expensive (with the contract) than the 1.0.
It's the 2.0 version and yet it lacks some of the most basic features that other phones have, and several "no-brainer" hardware upgrades like the camera were simply left out for apparently no reason at all. The price difference between the hardware for the 2 Mp camera and a 3.5 Mp camera (made by the same company!) is what? 10 bucks? Who here would not pay an extra ten bucks for the extra 1.5 Mp's?
The final kick in the teeth is you
won't be able to buy it online, and you
won't be able to buy it at all without agreeing to a two year minimum contract from a
predatory monopolistic service provider. I was one of those guys that spent the last year criticising all the hackers and jail-breakers of the iPhone, but now I think they were right all along. Apple is letting it's customers down big-time IMO.
It's still a very good phone, and I am not one of those loonies who tries to insist that Nokias or Treos or Blackberry's are better (they clearly aren't), so I won't be rushing out and purchasing a different phone, but I sure won't be buying this thing until I can buy it without a contract and at a reasonable price.
