All I wanted anyways was a 16GB iPhone with GPS so I'm as happy as can be, and for $300! The wait sucks though.

funny how all the "that's an easy software fix" stuff was said almost a year ago about the first iphone. I even remember someone posting something to the effect of "my buddy knows someone who works in the research dept, the next update DEFINITELY fixes blah blah blah", and yet iphone 2.0 still has these features missing (such as copy/paste).

Anywho, after reading all 8 pages of this, it's funny as hell seeing arguments start because no one knows if the OP was talking about a camera flash or adobe flash. People assume, but i don't think it was ever specified.

BTW, what's a2dp?

I wasn't upgrading anyway. I'm pissed i had to switch to att's crappy network where i miss calls all the time and it's expensive, only to see it can be unlocked a few months later. I won't be upgrading until i can get a 128gb unlocked iphone. and it better be able to massage my feet.

What I WASN"T disappointed in:
- 3G
- GPS
- price reduction
- black plastic casing/shape
- better audio quality
- games, games, games!

What I WAS disappointed in:

- no video-conferencing
- no 32 GB model
- no option for black casing for 16 GB model (I like the black one 10x times more than the white)
- better resolution phone
- wait until July

Even though there isnt a video-recorder or video chat, its not IMPOSSIBLE for a developer to create an app that can turn the iPhones camera into one and give/sell it on the App Store. I think a lot of developers that have created awesome apps for the jailbroken app might make them available via the App Store.

I'm definitely buying the 16 GB one, and even though I don't like the white case as much as I do the black one, I'll still get it. (and maybe hope someone comes out with a cool case/skin that I can cover my iPhone in

All this whining is really funny if when you realize that normal people are just going to be excited as hell to get an iPhone at $200, and you guys are picky babies with all these complaints that can't possibly be fulfilled.

Yeah, Apple, please add 3G, GPS, an extra camera on the front, an extra memory chip (required for 32GB) and a phenomenal CPU for the outrageously taxing Flash runtime. Oh, and make it smaller. Wait! And a better battery! And make it cheaper. Also, I want MMS so AT&T can rob me of my hard earned money for a service that is basically email. And make it look better according to my arbitrary and nit-picky assessment.

You guys are hilarious. Really. This is comedic gold.

People complain about high gas prices but then they have the money to go out and buy a phone that costs more than my computer. Thanks but no thanks. I'll stick with Verizon Wireless over that other sucky cell phone company.

A very minimal upgrade if you think about it

No really, how are you guys not disappointed? Do you love Apple so much that you would allow them to continue to lag behind in such basic features such as video recording and voice-dialing? 3G and GPS were something that a $499 first generation iphone supposed to have. We all gave Apple a break on that because it was their "first product in the market" and the fact that they pioneered touch screen and forced the industry to focus on interface. Now that competitors are catching up in those areas and the most Apple can offer on its second generation iphone is something that should've been on the first generation one?

People aren't disappointed for the lack of innovative features. They are disappointed with Apple not providing them with something as basic as video recording, voice-dialing, copy and paste, etc.
I agree totally. The further I get from the RDF, the more underwhelmed I am about this phone.

I am an Apple user since before OS X and a big supporter, but you really have to be drinking the Kool-Aid to say this new iPhone is anything other than a slight improvement on the original.

It's a minor hardware upgrade, and to non-corporate users a minor software update, period. It's also more expensive (with the contract) than the 1.0.

It's the 2.0 version and yet it lacks some of the most basic features that other phones have, and several "no-brainer" hardware upgrades like the camera were simply left out for apparently no reason at all. The price difference between the hardware for the 2 Mp camera and a 3.5 Mp camera (made by the same company!) is what? 10 bucks? Who here would not pay an extra ten bucks for the extra 1.5 Mp's?

The final kick in the teeth is you won't be able to buy it online, and you won't be able to buy it at all without agreeing to a two year minimum contract from a predatory monopolistic service provider. I was one of those guys that spent the last year criticising all the hackers and jail-breakers of the iPhone, but now I think they were right all along. Apple is letting it's customers down big-time IMO.

It's still a very good phone, and I am not one of those loonies who tries to insist that Nokias or Treos or Blackberry's are better (they clearly aren't), so I won't be rushing out and purchasing a different phone, but I sure won't be buying this thing until I can buy it without a contract and at a reasonable price.

.

All of this supposedly.

Samsung Omnia

3.2" Full Touch Screen with Haptic tactile feedback
7.2Mbit HSDPA + EDGE
WiFi 802.11g
GPS with voice navigation
Accelerometer and autorotation
Ambent Light sensor
Second front camera for video calling
Voice Recognition
FM Radio
H.264, MP4 and DivX playback
TV-Out
5 Megapixel autofocus camera with a flash, geotagging, image stabilization, face recognition and smile detection
Wide Dynamic Range - can take face photos facing sun!
H.264 SD Video Recording 30fps
Automatic panorama maker
Bluetooth Wireless Stereo
8 or 16GB onboard with microSD upgradable to 32GB.
Slightly shorter and narrower than the current iPhone
About the same thickness as the current iPhone
Brushed metal back

BAM! You nailed it. The samsung makes the iphone look like 3yr old tech. I am going to take a look at this phone for sure.

My Disappointments:

- No 32GB (WTF? I thought the whole point of the iPhone is to replace multiple devices but act as one that can master it all. Now i have to carry a bigger iPod as well to hold my music and videos?)

- The wait (Again waiting. Great. I thought after the macworld we'd have seen a fully finished app-store and available iPhone 2.0 by now)

- Plastic back casing (I have to see it in person but i believe the first-gen back looks much better and noble. This plastic version could end up looking really cheap, smudgy and scratchy. We'll see.)

- No better camera (Many competitors have a 5mp camera and video recording too)

- Still no copy & paste?

Simple fact is apple is starting to really suck. I mean look at their old computers, same designs, no innovation. I am no longer impressed at these keynotes. Macworld, WWDC, whatever. Hype is built up for months and then blahh. If apple doesn't want pissed off customers then stop making HUGE deals out of stupid upgrades that should just show up on the website. There is no need for a developer conference to announce an upgrade to 3g. I see 3g phones all day long. That is a feature the first iphone should have had.

Just another steve let down speech. BORING. LAME. No innovation or forward thinking. All about profit. OH and mark up another included accessory as gone. Jeez. Now no dock. Whats next? No bag at the apple store when you make a purchase?

well apple is one amoung others...

iep, that is, again theres no special hardware here, the best part is software.
they pack a battery, chips, et all with sticks on a round case and they can call it the best fit design.

i never saw a phone 3g without frontface cam...the very reason that you buy an mobile with 3g in europe is to make videocalls. maybe they are trying to forcing people to use data plans, but whats the point? we use mobile phones to make calls not to use a computer.

fok, they don't put a front face camera because they know the batery will drain faster

listen to the music at the world domination scenario... ridiculous!

If that iPhone feels as cheap as it looks ill just keep my RAZR.

I don't even see how SJ can call 200 a "better deal" than the last 8gb phone. ATT is going to raise the data plan by at least 10 dollars. Across 2 years that is 240.00, putting the TOTAL you pay for that iPhone experience in the same ball park as the 1st gen. Thanks for the payment plan apple....

My gripe list:

hardware:

-- No improved camera
-- No camera flash
-- No external LED indicator for new mail/messages
-- No videoconferencing (front camera)
-- No LED backlit or OLED screen
-- No larger and/or higher-resolution screen
-- No user-replaceable battery
-- No 32 GB option (and $100 premium for an additional 8 GB seems a bit much considering I can find an 8 GB USB 2.0 flash stick for under $20-$30 now).
-- No mini flash memory expansion slot

software/firmware:

-- No local storage for files
-- No video recording
-- No universally-available horizontal keyboard
-- No cut and paste
-- No picture MMS
-- No way to select and email more than 1 photo at a time
-- No basic editing controls for photos (crop, rotate, etc.)
-- No way to specify the downscaling (or to stop it altogether) of photos synced from your computer
-- No way to use .Mac account aliases for sending (it always uses the master account address)
-- No ability to download, save, and sync files from the web
-- No real-time chat (iChat)
-- No Bluetooth support for external devices other than earsets
-- No notes syncing
-- No categories for iCal events
-- No master on/off switch for all alarms (clocks)
-- No preference for adjusting touch sensitivity (I'd like a slight longer tap delay since I'm constantly firing off links accidentally in Safari when I'm really trying to tap and drag)

Now of course some of the software items may show up at some point, I just haven't heard of them yet. Despite some disappointments, I'll still be getting one on July 11. The 3G, GPS, and Exchange support alone are worth it. :)

Based on everything I'd read, the update today is EXACTLY what I was expecting.

You all read the same rumor sites I do. What caused you to expect more?

If today disappointed you I think it's time for you to realize that the problem is you and your strange fantasies. You can't blame Apple for that.

Well, is it too much to ask for MMS and copy/paste at this point? A camera upgrade is fairly reasonable too. How about video? Also, the phone portion of the iPhone isn't the greatest in the world, did they do anything to address that?

These are reasonable expectations, not pie in the sky.

Even my cell phone which was free with contract at Verizon has flash on the camera. LOL.

They did say something about improved audio quality. I don't know if it was just for MP3 playback or not though...

If i had an Edge phone, i'd be happy that i didn't have to buy a new phone. 3G is still limited from what i hear, GPS- to me-no big deal, otherwise, it's the same phone. + it costs more now monthly. When 2.0 comes out, your Edge phones will feel like new.
:)

Well, is it too much to ask for MMS and copy/paste at this point?

I was almost surprised by this, but then I think "If they were going to do this, why not in the last update? And since they didn't do it then, what's changed since then?"

So really, no, it doesn't really surprise me. If they'd wanted to do these things they would have done them before now. So (for whatever reason) they obviously just don't think they're important.

A camera upgrade is fairly reasonable too.

Now you're getting into the same territory as "the Macbook Pro MUST have a new case this time! The just have to!"

You see how well that's worked out for those people.

How about video?

How about the app store? Funny how everyone's so CERTAIN that no one in the whole world thought to write a video-recording app. I'm willing to bet we'll this very soon. We know the current hardware is capable of it. People shouldn't be so annoyed that Apple left some tasks up to the 3rd party vendors.

These are reasonable expectations, not pie in the sky.

So is asking for 2 USB ports on the Macbook Air, but that didn't happen either.

Look, I'm not arguing FOR what Apple did, I'm just saying that if you watch the kind of updates they put out in other hardware, then expecting EVERYTHING that people were guessing IS, in fact, a pie-in-the-sky dream. Apple doesn't work like that for any product.

Question about ease of use

Do the clone iphones, like the upcoming Samsung have media managers, like iTunes, that can keep your audio, video and podcasts updated daily with latest additions? I really want to get a different phone, but I feel that I am locked in with the iPhone mostly because of it's ease of use with iTunes. Am I missing something or is there something out there that can do what iTunes can do?

I'm not disappointed in the hardware, since we pretty much knew what was coming. There are a few software features that I'd have liked, but nothing major.

What is really disappointing is that actually increased the total price of the phone while presenting it as some sort of huge discount. An additional $15 a month for an equivalent data plan over 24 months is huge. I expect Apple stuff to be expensive, but I think it's somewhat insulting to raise the price and brag about how much they lowered the price. They should have been upfront with the fact that the cost was moving from up-front to monthly.

HIGHLY upset about the release date

Also upset about no youtube upgrades and no video recording features and no voice activation

Other than that, can't wait to drop $300 on my 16GB black 3G iPhone

I feel that I am locked in with the iPhone mostly because of it's ease of use with iTunes.
Wow, that's horrible. I don't know why people feel they have to put up with superior ease of use when it's just so unnecessary. Why stay with something that works?
