You are correct on both statements. Also, the month periods of the two plans are not likely the same (unless you bought the iPad and activated the 200 MB plan the exact same day as the start of your 1 GB billing cycle).

They are on two different iPads so they are on different cycles.

Pulling up my new (got it an hour ago) rMini account it shows that I have the "Free for life" 200mb and the "Unlimited" 1gb plan active at this time.

Here is how I understand it, which may or may not be correct.

When using the Free 200mb plan: Which I have on my Air and wife's Mini

Once you hit 200mb the data is stopped. You are taken to a screen to buy more prepaid data. (I had this happen last week).

When using a monthly plan (I have the 1gb): Which I have on my rMini

Once I use 1 gb of LTE I will still have unlimited data but it will be MUCH slower.

Again, just my understanding, it may not be 100% correct.

This sounds exactly right to me.

I ordered a white rMini 16gb online to avoid the hassle of the stores. Coming this Friday! Can't wait. It does require a credit check and $10 SIM card. I tried to get it waived but the online csr wouldn't budge. I'm going to cancel the plan after a month and pay the entire amount. Then I'll try my Verizon iPad SIM to see if it works.

I was able to get the SIM card fee waived and three free months of data in the store.

Enjoy your new rMini! I am loving mine.

Would a non-US resident be able to walk into a T-mobile store and purchase the Retina iPad Mini LTE at Wi-Fi pricing, cancel the contract and bring it home across the pond?

My dad will travel to the US for business in May. Thinking of upgrading my old Mini.

I don't know for sure, but it's possible signing up for a plan may include using a social security number. I cannot confirm and am just speculating.

They run a credit check in store. You need a SS #.

Possibly but I think they still do a credit check for any postpaid plan even if you pay full price up front so you would need a U.S. social security number..

Seems like most of us have used this promo to get the rMini. I realize this isn't ground breaking news, just interesting.

I'm looking into also getting a retina mini from t mobile. I don't have a voice plan but I plan on purchasing it full price right away. Either way do I get 200 mb free? If I wanted to get 1gb I'd only be paying $10 a month right?

Yes, you can get the 200mb free for the life of the tablet. You are eligible for the free 200mb regardless of where you buy the retina mini. The 1GB is free through 2014 if you have a voice plan. I am not sure how much it is without the voiceplan.

$10 per month until January 2014, $20 after that.

So the data is throttled after the 1GB of LTE is used? I'm considering doing this because I really want an iPad again.

Ordered a 32 GB Air on Monday night. Received it today. I love TMO's fast, free shipping.

Debated on the rMini, but the screen size of the Air was too much to pass up. And with how thin and light it is, the portability is great, IMO. Obviously not as good as the rMini, but coming from the OG iPad and then the 3rd gen, this thing feels like heaven in my hands.

Does anyone know if you have to have a t mobile voice plan for the deal? I'm looking to just get the ipad with 1gb of data.

What happens if you exceed the 1.2gb? Overages fees or it just stops working? I'm considering the $10 a month but not sure if 1.2gb will be enough. It looks like 3GB is $20, would I be able to up to 3GB later this year if need be or the promo might expire? I could probably live with 1GB for awhile, hate to pay for data i'm not using.

Greg

for tablets it just stops and does not give any more access until you pay for more. no overages

No, you don't have to have a voice plan. If you do have a voice plan the 1gb is free, if you don't it is $10 per month.

It doesn't stop, it just gets throttled to a lower speed.

Just an update to this. On my new rMini the 200mb get used up before my 1gb starts. Not sure if that has any benefit at all, but I just noticed it on my account summary.

I got a T-Mobile pay as you go SIM for testing and so for I've gotten better data speeds on T-Mobile than on Verizon (V-14mb T-21mb down). Makes me wonder why I'm paying Verizon's premium.
