But they can't say 'hey look at our amazing new awesome keyboard that is better than the old keyboard which we told you was amazing and awesome because our new new keyboard is more like the old old keyboard and not the old new keyboard'.

I'm sure this will be a silent update

Why not? They can easily say “We’ve designed an even better keyboard than our last one and you’re going to love it!” They do that stuff all the time.

I bet this is somewhat of a soft launch, probably along with the Mac Pro. Looking at the leaks, it's not a major revision, just a slightly larger body and screen, rearranged Touch Bar, and then new scissor key switches, which I don't think they want to make a big deal out of due to ongoing consumer lawsuits. I think they just want to get it out there and eventually people will acknowledge the keyboard is fixed.
Im still betting if this thing gets released this year it will have the SAME keyboard they just put in the 2019's back in May. I just don't see them releasing a soft update with a brand new keyboard after they just fixed the current lines so they say. They would need to do a bigger overhaul of the body to fit a larger keyboard in there and by then its a complete redesign.

Because after years denying there was a problem with the last keyboard they won't want to be seen to backtrack. Its too close to admitting a problem.

They’ve already admitted its a problem and claimed to have corrected it with the current model.

And so because the old keyboard has problems they can’t ever announce a new one? That makes no sense.

Are we expecting the case to be larger or can they fit 16” in the old body? I know the Catalina icon comparison showed a size increase, but that was maybe just a mock-up.

Well, when the 16" icon disappeared from the release version of 10.15.1 that suggested it was included by mistake, and might have just been a mockup.

...then it turned out that there were other images in 10.15.1 that matched the machine shown in the icon and all Apple had removed was the one image that was explicitly labelled as a 16" MBP. So it looks like the larger design definitely might be possibly real.

They’ve already admitted its a problem and claimed to have corrected it with the current model.

They've announced repair programs and 3 rounds of "improvements". They haven't explicitly stood up and said "the butterfly keyboard was a bad design", or that the level of failures was unacceptable - let alone admitted that, even without failures, the design is clearly too "love it or hate it" to be the only option in their laptop range.

Going back to a "scissor" design (which may well turn out to be substantially the same as the current Magic Keyboards) is hard to spin as an improvement.

Look it seems like the model does exist... I suppose Apple is just playing the waiting game maybe on even 10th gen CPUs or Navi?

Honestly I'll be waiting for it no point upgrading to the 2019 models knowing this exists.

Apple can spin it any way they want to. If you don’t know that then you don’t know Apple very well.

All they have to say is that it’s a new and improved keyboard based on user feedback. They can call it “Courage” if they want to. They can put any type of spin on it they want and talk at length about it and how they’ve innovated even further with this redesign.

At the end of the day all this “They won’t be doing an event” is just wishful thinking because the “They are doing an October announcement” has been proven wrong.

Look if you own a Mac or a Windows laptop right now just hold out for this machine it's simple as that.

Buying a current 15" 2019 with old Polaris Gpu arch doesn't make any sense at all, you are literally shooting yourself on the foot

It doesn't matter how this thing gets revealed... At the end of the day it's an enthusiast piece of hardware. We don't see casual users talking about this product due to the fact it doesn't make any sense of all to any of them

Heck I'm into databases and virtualisation and I'm looking forward to this because I need to run 3 VMs alongside some other million apps on the background in MacOS.

This is a mobile rig for folks who do some heavy lifting not for the guys who browse emails and look at Facebook.

That’s great, but I’m not sure that has anything to do with what we are talking about.

The current versions of the MacBook Pro were all released without events (the high-end in May, the low-end in July) including significant new features like 8-core options at the high end and touch bar* in the low-end. Likewise, the iMac in March.

The current version still has the same design. They don't need to announce it from events. It happened several times already.

Apple may indeed someday release a 16” MacBook, or 17”, or 20”....

There... can we start another thread dedicated to the release of the 16” MacBook in November?

And another for December? January? ...

I bet we can keep this going until Apple releases this device, at which point someone will claim victory because the rumors were correct.

:)

I can't see them doing a 16" launch without some type of event. Apple usually likes to tout major launches like this would be to show off new features. I can't just see them dumping it in the Apple Store without some type of event to discuss the laptop. I could be totally wrong but doesn't seem like it it will be out this year.
As discussed by others, and based on macOS Catalina beta leak, 16" MacBook Pro does not appear to be a major upgrade.

Slightly larger screen, smaller bezel, and switching to scissors keyboard are all very welcomed changes, but nothing that needs to be explained in an event.

I expect 16" MacBook Pro to be announced on the website, most likely on the same day Mac Pro's order page goes up. My guess is December 12, 2019 -- iMac Pro launched on the second Thursday of December 2 years ago.

I hope you’re right but I guess we’ll see.

The 13 inch MBP Ice Lake refresh will be interesting, but 15 inch laptops don't seem to have much on the immediate horizon.

But I don't think a new Intel CPU is going to hold this back. Even without drastically new CPUs from Intel, I could see Apple getting hold of some minor speed-bumped CPUs, much like they did for the 2019 13 inch MBPs and that would be enough.

There are then plenty of other upgrades they can shout about, the 16 inch screen in the same size chassis, a Navi GPU to drive the extra pixels, Wifi 6, bumping base storage to 512GB, 3000Mhz RAM. It's not revolutionary, but it keeps Apple in contention.

You might also see a slight curve ball like FaceID (although the TouchID still being present suggests not), possibly a cellular modem option given that Apple has picked up Intels 4G modem team, or the return of a discontinued port - my money would be on HDMI as it's not a legacy port, easy to add and they could sell HDMI 2.1 and Freesync / VRR compatibility.

All for a low low price!

Well, I can dream.

I mean.. Do we know if Navi is ready for prime time in laptops?

Take this with a grain of salt...

Careful with the grain of salt.
Depending on the tolerances of the new keyboard you may get a key stuck

It’s not news. It’s all recycled “interpretation” of Kuo’s comments from last month. There have been no new comments from Kuo, or at least none are referenced. Maybe they’re super secret.

This.
What we see on this forum currently is really wishful thinking - maybe November, maybe December..

October is over, there was no event nor announcement. Next reasonable slot is .. next year.

If they were to do just the announcement (don't believe in it - MBP 16 is a new model, it is redesign they want to talk about) they would have done it already - shopping period is about to start.

I was hoping to get new machine sooner but have accepted the delay and now patiently waiting for next reliable rumors. On the positive side we may have new GPU/CPU options, faster memory, wifi 6 , .. , etc.

Right, where is Kuo's research note explicitly saying this?

I wonder how much of it is people not being able to read and just assuming without critical thinking that Kuo's earlier note of a scissor switch Macbook coming in 2020 is the 16". We can all infer that by mid-2020 all of Apple's laptops will be scissor switch, so Kuo's note is sort of a no duh note and made no specific mention whatsoever that it was the 16".
