Are the new trackpads as loud as the previous (Unibody) ones?

Mine is quieter than my previous Unibody Macbook.

Yeah the trackpad is a bit noisy. The keyboard in general is noisier and squishier than the silver ones in the previous generation.

See above. As for the keyboard, it's definitely nicer than the Unibody Macbook, but still not a slick feeling at the pre-unibody Macbook Pro's. I'm still very happy with this machine as a whole.

i wanna upgrade the ram.. where is the best place and price... wanna make my macbook even better :D

I've had very good luck with Mushkin RAM, in my mom's MB, my previous UMB, and this MBP.

MRJ, no, I haven't run a software update. I am so new to Mac that I was worried I'd do something wrong. I'm not sure how to even do a software update. Is there a way to tell which version of iTunes is on this new MBP? And since the "old" computer was purchased May 1 of this year, and I no longer have it, how do I know what version that was? I'm sorry I'm so ignorant about all this. Thanks so much.

To do a software update click on the apple in the upper left corner and select software update (have to be online)

To see what version of itunes you have open itunes, and then select itunes in the menu bar and "about itunes"

qpid, I can't get to that ABOUT ITUNES because I get that message that I mentioned about not being able to read the library. I think since I am having so much trouble I will either wait a couple of days til the hoopla settles down a bit and call Apple Care or go back to an Apple Store. Mine is two hours drive away, but I will be in So. Cal with access to several stores next week. I don't want to wipe out the iTunes on here or the iPod and since I'm so new I will just wait since I can't get into the iTunes at all. But, thank you very much, I appreciate the help.

i love my mbp but want to upgrade the hard drive and ram. I know how to do the ram but is installing the HD the same process?

dont worry about checking the iTunes version... just run Software Update, as another poster said, by clicking on the apple in the upper left corner, and selecting the second item called Software Update. then when it runs, just hit the install button and all the updates will be installed. if you are still having problems after this, then go an Apple store.

but try this first.

I got mine on Sunday from the Apple Store in KC and have only put it down for I think five minutes. I use a Mac Pro at work and have had a PowerBook G4 for 4 years. This computer is perfect for what I need. The screen rocks. It seems very snappy and I get about 7 hours of battery life. The backlight for the keyboard has never worked since I got my PowerBook and I don't know how I lived without it.

Pretty much, just take the bottom off and pull it out.

I've had mine for 24hrs now and im loving it, i've used a mac mini for a while so remember some of the basics, just going through moving files and installing programs.

The multitouch is brilliant, i just have to get used to how big the trackpad is as it's twice the size of my VAIO and i sometimes rest another finger on it without realizing.

I just found the speech thing were you highlight text and it reads it back to you.

So far I love mine. Finally apple has a decent price on a great machine. I went with the base unibody model and upgraded the ram to 4gb and put my already owned 320GB 7200 seagate in it. Performs just as good as my previous MBP 15's. I don't require upgraded video card and for what i do CPU speed difference is not noticeable so I get away cheap now :). Love it!

Screen backlighting issue?

Ok I have the macbook pro 13" screen at half brightness in my basement with one lamp. I noticed something weird.
As i move closer to the screen, the screen goes dark a bit and when i move away it becomes bright.
is this right?

you can try it too if you put your palm on the front sensor where the isight camera is and see what happens.
I assumed that if it gets dark, that the light will be brighter as opposed to get dark
any advise?

I'm not sure about most of the things you said, but the ambient light sensor is designed to turn UP the brightness when the room becomes brighter (to out-compete the room's light) and turns DOWN the brightness when the room gets dark (to minimize eye strain)

ah gotcha!
ok plus i figured that you can turn if off in the settings too

Smartalic, qpid, I did do the system update and as far as I can tell IT WORKED JUST FINE.

The only problem I'm having now is keeping up with all the many passwords needed for different things. I have them written down but must have made an error somewhere as I had to reset something. Anyway, I think I have the apple id, mobile me, iTunes, email, etc. so hopefully they are all straight now.
Also, I'm just wondering, why would I need so many updates since I bought this computer MONDAY? As in 6 days ago? That seems like a lot, especially since they did the transferring from the also new Mac Book, purchased May 1, to the MBP.
Thanks for the help. I think I'm good to go now.

You bought it Monday but it was built last month likely. So there has been new software since it was put into the box.

and, as a corollary, even if it was built 6 days ago, the operating system imaged to the hard drive isn't update every day. the OS they put on the machine includes software that is weeks, even months, old. Apple doesn't worry or care because they expect you to run software update so they dont have to:)

glad it worked.

Upgraded from Aluminum Macbook. Bought the 2.23 ghz
I would say the upgrade is well worth.
Way better screen!

I just took delivery of my 13" MBP 2.53 with 128SSD. It's FAST!! The screen is beautiful. I love this machine. I sold my Air for this and I couldn't be happier. :)

I was reluctant to upgrade but now that I have - I LOVE it!

It is SO much faster than my old Powerbook, and quieter too. Keyboard and trackpad are great too. The glossy screen (which I thought I'd hate) is fantastic too.. the colors are so much brighter

All in all, very happy with my purchase

You exchanged it because you had 1 stuck/dead pixel? I though there had to be a few for Apple to exchange it? I've got 1 stuck pixel, right on the dock. I've tried a few methods but nothing has worked so far.

I may take it back then if you had sucess.

No, you don't take it back and say "I have a stuck pixel", its "its making this weird sound, not all the time, but its a grinding sound". That's how you do it. :p

1.5 or the 3.0 SAT interface ?

Does your 13" SSD has the 1.5 or the 3.0 SAT interface. If you can check I appreciate.

Is here a guide somewhere here to install a Hard drive?

I think I'll run out of space soon with all these torrents and programs I am installing.

I absolutely love mine. I'm coming from a 15 inch PowerBook G4 (which is now the wife's). It gets about 6+ hours of heavy use. Very fast and snappy. It runs very cool too. I can run it for hours and still comfortable keep it in my lap.

My only dislike (and something I may have to get used to) is the multitouch track pad. With my PB, I used to rest my thumb on the mouse button and move around with my index finger. Now, with no dedicated mouse button to press, and with moving my index finger around, it has been causing some pages to zoom in/out when I don't want them too. Is there any way to disable the pinch zooming on the track pad? It's driving me bonkers.

Exactly same with me w/ the 15". As for the track pad, you'll get used to it in about a day or two. I had the same problems in safari.
