So i accidentally upgraded. And I've read every post in this thread. But I'm stuck.

I was going to bed, and I plugged my iPhone into my macbook pro to charge overnight. As I plugged in, it asked if I wanted to upgrade to 3.1.3. Well, in my state, I didn't read it, and assumed it was the update to iTunes I haven't done yet. I clicked Download and Install thinking I was updating iTunes. When I woke up in the morning, my previously jailbroken at 3.1.2 iPhone 3GS was at a factory state.

I followed Sauriks directions, added the proper entry into my /etc/hosts file, and have put the iPhone into recovery mode. At that point, I option+restore and choose the factory 3.1.2 I have locally still. It signs fine, and starts restoring, but eventually bombs out and shows me the Connect to iTunes screen on the iPhone. What's going on here?

Am now on a jailbroke 3.1.3 iPhone 3G (baseband 05.12.01) but its now network locked but i have no idea which network its locked to!

Its a great paper weight now :(

Same exact problem here. I'm having to give up and go back to 3.1.3 cause it's getting late here.

The 3GS can only be downgraded in DFU mode. Recovery mode won't work.

Saurik gets hashes for whatever firmware version is being signed by Apple when you choose to make your life easier, and for every subsequent version as it is released. Those of us with 3.0 hashes also have 3.1 and 3.1.2. You probably only have 3.1.2 (if any).

But seriously, if you can't figure out how to edit your hosts file by following Saurik's instructions, perhaps jailbreaking is not for you.

ok so I tried it last night...and it did not work.... the phone also stuck in recovery mode and I wasnt able to do anything about it until I recovered using 3.1.3 so I assume something went wrong somewhere maybe I did not save the sshz or maybe something else... but I keep getting the error10015 or whatever it is that I am supposed to get as mentioned on modmyi forums...

i guess no choice just sit tight...

And yes I know how to jailbreak.. sometimes instructions can be convoluted for no proper reason and sometimes just downright inaccurate... too long a story to explain but yeah will keep up with the forums and see if any solutions pop up

have you read the downgrade thing on modmyi ? theres more of a discussion there

I haven't. Can you link me to it?

And fyi, I mispoke. i was doing DFU mode, black screen and all as well. When i'd try to restore to factory 3.1.2, it would pass the signing and start to install, but bomb out somewhere in the middle with an error from iTunes (can't recall the number). I tried it with a custom ipsw from Pwnage and the stock 3.1.2. The stock firmware got the furthest, and the custom firmware failed right away. Signing doesn't seem to be my problem though, as I know i had mine on file and it seems to be getting past that when I attempt to install.

I've been on the jailbreak train since iPhone 2G and am a Linux sys admin. So, while I do make mistakes and misread directions from time to time, I feel like I know what i'm doing here.

But I am not sure of all the details when it comes to iBoot and what not. I assume if i updated to 3.1.3 factory then I got a new iBoot and baseband. I'm hoping that I only screwed myself out of unlocking, because I don't care about using it on anything but AT&T. But I want my jailbreak back!

Well, I think i found the guide. I'm on mac, but I read the guide for both OS's and saw in the comments on the Windows version (http://modmyi.com/guides/?p=3146) that the problem I was running into could be cured by using a tethered jailbreak option of redsn0w.

I'm not interesting in a tethered jailbreak I don't think. So, I guess I'm stuck at 3.1.3. Though these guides seem to indicate what I"m doing should be no problemo. And also, they tell you to enter recovery mode. But as I said before, I was in DFU mode. Perhaps I'll try it as per their instructions for recovery mode later tonight. I don't have time right now.

If I have a 3G Iphone that is factory unlocked do I have anything to worry about Jailbreaking in 3.1.3?

Also, If I do jailbreak, do I need to download the 3.1.2 ipsw and browse to it in Redsn0w? I just got my phone and went straight into 3.1.3.

You can jailbreak your 3G to 3.1.3

Hackintosh has a good tutorial.

Thank-you!

Though I was planning on this being my first attempt to jailbreak my iPhone 3gs 3.1.3, I appreciate the clear and concise answer to my search. Now, I'm just sad.:(

i guess I was hoping someone could confirm for me whether I'm stuck with only a tethered jailbreak, or whether I can get back to where I was with 3.1.2. I'm guessing since i probably got a new iBoot with my accidental 3.1.3 update, that I'm screwed and can only do the tethered jailbreak. But I'd love for someone to tell me otherwise.

iBoot is burned onto ROM chips inside your phone. The only way you can get a new version of iBoot is with a soldering iron. If you would have had a tethered jailbreak with 3.1.2., you will have a tethered jailbreak with 3.1.3.

What week was your 3GS made?

did you try using iRecovery? that normally boots it up after it fails after the installation.

If you have set up everything right to sign with Saurik's server and have put your phone in DFU mode, there should be nothing short of hardware failure that would prevent your phone being downgraded to 3.1.2. Are you getting any error PwnageTool?

Unlocked

It's locked to official carrier since you can't unlock.

I've just used FuzzyBand and have been able to downgrade my baseband to 04.26.08 whilst staying on v3.1.3. Here's what i did: (Windows)

1) Used Sn0wbreaze to upgrade and activate the phone to 3.1.3. Followed this guide:
http://www.redmondpie.com/sn0wbreeze-3.1.3-jailbreak-iphone-3g-3gs-3.1.3/

2) Installing the update using Sn0wbreaze wouldn't work initially as kept giving an error so after switching USB ports it got much further but not all the way. I then installed and used iREB to get me past the next error iTunes was giving when trying to install update. (iREB will crash in the background this is normal)

3) Booted up the phone and opened Cydia, installed and ran Blacksn0w.

4) Again through Cydia installed FuzzyBand. There are 2 versions I used the one that is just called FuzzyBand not 3g Fuzzyband.

After rebooting the phone it is now unlocked again and working fine, the baseband has been downgraded to 04.26.08!! :)

I purchased the phone already unlocked 2nd hand but don't think it was one of the original few, I would advise giving FuzzyBand a try it will tell you if its not possible to downgrade the baseband so nothing lost.

Fuzzyband only works with phones with the 5.08 bootloader. Those phones were only manufactured in the the first weeks after the 3G was released. Either your phone was made then, or it was remanufactured using an older chipset.

I'm completely stuck myself. I know for a fact I had my SHSH saved with Saurik, changed my /etc/hosts file as directed and it appears that iTunes gets past the signing portion and part way through the actual install of 3.1.2 and then I get a failure with an error 15.

I've seen a couple other people having the same exact problem but no real ideas yet on why...who knows.

I'll probably try again this weekend since I have time.

Have you tried running iREB before clicking restore in iTunes?
