Awesome, I didn't realize iBoot was unchangeable. I'm definitely in the clear then. I bought this thing in the first week that the 3GS was released. A week 26 I believe. Serial number starts with 86926*.

Anyway, I'm going to back up and try again. I'll redownload the ipsw and try it, and give iRecovery a try if I can't get it up with just Pwnage.

I'm feeling a bit more positive about it now, so that's great news! I'll be back :)

Well, good news. I'm back on 3.1.2 and am on my way back to the state I was in before. Can't wait.

What I did was this: use the modmyi guide to get to the point that I was failing before. iTunes did a full restore with the factory 3.1.2 firmware, but towards the end it would bomb out with an error and reboot to give me the recovery icon. At this point, I ran iRecovery and got it to boot to 3.1.2. I was back at factory point, and then I ran the new pwnage tool to create a custom 3.1.2 firmware. It walked me through plugging the iPhone in, and sent it some payload before dumping me in recovery mode and telling me to recover with the custom firmware. I did as instructed and it worked!

Happy days again! Thanks all!

dunt remember if save the shsh on cydia, or saurik server.

Hey, I am just wondering how you could downgrade your iphone.
I got my iphone 3gs 16gb about 2 months ago. stupidly enough crash my ip, and have to restore, now i am stucked at a non-jb and locked ip. all my files are gone, left only the new 3.1.3 fw, and a new baseband 5.12.1.
i jb it with blackrain b4, and it works well, i like it. original 3.1.2 fw, and baseband 5.11.07 b4 the stupid restore.
I tried to restore, but just didnt get wat ya mean by using the saurik server. i tried to add this 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com to the host file, but it still cant get around with the itune, still saying the msg " not eligible with the build.
i dunt know if i did send my jb info the the saurik server, or save in the cyndia.
could you tell me more specifically how to work it around?

plz send any info you think could solve my problem to gary2430@hotmail.com
thx, and appreciated!

ok so i stupidly updated my iphone which was jailbroken and unlocked
now i cant use my sim card with the phone because it is with another provider
and i also cannot get past the authorization stage of the update
i have a theory that if i buy an AT&T sim card from the states (which the phone was originally with) use the sim to authorize the phone, then jailbreak it
and ring up AT&T and have it provider unlocked will i then be able to use my iphone again?
and am i able to ring AT&T from australia?

Theoretically you'll be able to activate your iPhone with an AT&T SIM-card but tell me, why would AT&T unlock your iPhone for you? ;)

iPhone 3GS

Jailbreak? Maybe
Unlock? No

Whether you can jailbreak your iPhone depends on whether you were previously jailbroken and have your phone's ECID SHSHs on file in Cydia (you can check this by opening Cydia on your phone and seeing if it says in green at the top of the main page: "This device has SHSHs on file for iPhone OS: 3.1.2"). If you do have this information on file, you will be able to downgrade your phone to 3.1.2 using Saurik's server to sign your install request (follow instructions here). You will then be able to jailbreak your phone using redsn0w or blackra1n.

Is there any way to tell if my SHSH is on file with Cydia without being able to run Cydia?

I jailbroke my phone about a week and a half ago, and my transfer was still pending according to the Cydia main screen as of Wednesday. On Wednesday, I had some problems with my phone and had to restore, but since my SHSH was still pending, I had no choice but to restore to 3.1.3.

If there is a way to find out if my file is on Saurik's server, then I can restore back to 3.1.2 and be happy :)

There are two ways that I can think of. You can try it and see if it works. If you don't have your SHSH on file, it will error out. Alternatively, you can download Umbrella and try to download your 3.1.2 SHSH from Saurik's server. There is a tutorial for it here. It will tell you if you don't have that SHSH on file.

I tried the Umbrella method and it said it could not get my ECID SHSH for 3.1.2, but it downloaded it for 3.1.3 which is weird since I never uploaded that one to Cydia (lost access to jailbroken programs when I had to restore, obviously).

Is it possible that the file is actually the 3.1.2 file I uploaded, but says 3.1.3 in the name since it is the device version I had to choose to get the file?

I am probably just out of luck, but here's to hoping

Are you sure you set the SHSH Repository to Saurik - Cydia in the drop-down menu? As far as I know Saurik hasn't started saving 3.1.3 SHSH's.

Also, I'm not sure you quite understand how Make My Life Easier works. You aren't uploading your SHSH...Saurik's server uses your ECID to requests it directly from Apple. You only have to click Make My Life Easier once...after that Saurik takes care of each new version automatically, requesting it right from Apple.

Try Umbrella again, making sure you've set it to Saurik-Cydia.

Yeah, I think I was misunderstanding how Make My Life Easier worked.

Either way, I had Saurik - Cydia selected and Umbrella said it couldn't find it when I had 3.1.2 selected.

Looks like I'll just have to be patient until someone manages to get 3GS jailbroken on 3.1.3

Thanks for suggesting Umbrella, it was worth a shot

We aren’t revealing any new exploits to Apple with this jailbreak. Everything here has been used before, it’s just a straightforward port of Pwnage2 and 24Kpwn to the new firmware. It’s possible the new firmware was released largely to flush out new exploits before the next big release. We won’t be biting.
Does this mean that the dev team isn't going to release an unlock (if they find one) until 4.0 is out?

Well, to be precise, it means that PwnageTool 3.1.5 doesn't contain make use of any new exploits. But it is very suggestive of the Dev Team's attitude toward this release: they don't want to waste anything on a tiny upgrade which is useless to most people when there are big things to come.

A friend of mine downloaded some video recording app from Cydia for his iPhone 2G and it completely borked the phone. He says he only "saw the pineapple" after that. Ouch.

The only option he had, then, was to restore the phone to get it working again. When he did, iTunes said that he could restore, but that it would also update his phone to 3.1.3. He went ahead and did that. It was unlocked before this restore.

Now he's stuck at the "emergency calls only" screen. Phone's working, but he can't get in. Interestingly, he can see his mobile provider's name and reception bars in the upper left, so I presume the unlock survived all this?

The question, then: is there a quick way to get past the emergency calls only to be able to use the iPhone again... or is the only way to use the phone again to go do this (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=7436), except with with redsn0w 0.9.3 and the 3.1.2 IPSW?

Thanks.

he should downgrade to 3.1.2, then jailbreak with blackra1n, which will hacktivate the iphone.

Thanks. That's an option. Would what I described work, though? That's what the summary at the beginning of this thread suggests, anyway.

On a 2G phone downgrading to 3.1.2 holds no advantage over jailbreaking at 3.1.3.

You should be able to jailbreak using redsn0w as you describe. Be sure to choose to hacktivate it and unlock if necessary.

I'm planning on getting an iPhone for my mom to use on t-mobile. From my research, it seems a Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G from ebay is the safest way to go (if anyone has any auctions/sellers to share, please do)

From this post:

iPhone 3G

Jailbreak? Yes
Unlock? Probably No

You can jailbreak your phone using redsn0w 0.9.3. When it asks you to point it to the firmware currently installed on your iPhone, you will have to "trick" it by pointing it to the 3.1.2 ipsw instead.

Sadly there is currently no way to unlock the new baseband installed with this firmware upgrade, and for most people it is impossible to downgrade the baseband. A small percentage of 3G owners (only those who purchased their 3G iPhones in the first weeks after release) may be able to downgrade their baseband using Fuzzyband, which has just been updated to work with phones stuck on the 5.12.01 baseband. The only way to know for certain whether this will work for you is to install Fuzzyband from Cydia and try it.

Sadly, if you are not one of those fortunate few early adopters for whom Fuzzyband will work, there is currently no way to unlock your phone. This means that you can only use your phone on the carrier it is officially locked to (unless your phone is factory unlocked). There is not currently any prospect for unlocking your phone.
...

Seems that if the upgrade to 3.1.3 happens, I could be ok. Worst case would be I would be locked to a carrier but since my phone would be factory unlocked, that wouldn't affect me right?

But since my mom will be using it, I wanted to keep it easy for her. Is there anyway to permanently disable the updates? Seems for everyone, the upgrade to 3.1.3 happens by accident.

But again, and sorry for this added question, I would be ok no matter what right?

I know we've seen one example in this thread of someone w/ the iPhone 3G accidentally upgrading:

If I have a 3G Iphone that is factory unlocked do I have anything to worry about Jailbreaking in 3.1.3?

Also, If I do jailbreak, do I need to download the 3.1.2 ipsw and browse to it in Redsn0w? I just got my phone and went straight into 3.1.3.

I'm a little worried about how his went straight into 3.1.3 but I believe if I'm buying off of ebay, I can make sure of the current software being at 3.1.2.

Over on the What to look for in a used iphone thread, pcs are junk suggested an iPhone 3GS for the following reasons:

...

I recommend buying a 3GS rather than a 3G, considering that, apple is focusing the updates more on the 3GS rather than the 3G. The 3GS is alot faster, and supports the compass application. And the 3GS is available in black and white, also there is a 32gb model. There is white and black 3g models, but the white models have been discontinued, so you have to buy a used one, which will probably have a lot of scratches. also im not so sure if there is a 32gb 3g model. Personally, i would go with a 3GS, because, for one, i already have one and love it, and two, i like having the latest and greatest.
....

I think the reasons to go with the iPhone 3G are 1) safety of keeping the jailbreak and 2) cost (I'm sure a factory unlocked iPhone 3GS is much more than a factory unlocked iPhone 3G).

hey i already know every thing about jb and unlocking but does anyone know if i alt upgrade my iphone will all my jb stuff stay?

If you really "do know everything" about jailbreaking and unlocking, then you should know that any firmware you install via iTunes (if that's what you mean by "alt upgrade") is gonna overwrite your current firmware, so yes, you will lose your jailbreak and unlock.

And it's generally referred to as "option + upgrade" on the Mac
