I made a seperate thread the other day but I thought I'd copy and paste it in here as well:

I left my phone on standby for 9 hours the other night without using it at all. When I checked it in the morning it had dropped to 91% with 31 minutes usage. I had push disabled and mail set to fetch hourly.

I ran a few more tests leaving the phone on standby for an hour and found for every hour on standby the usage was 4 minutes (even though I hadn't touched it in that time).
I tried uninstalling a few programmes like sbsettings but it made no difference.

I restored to stock 4.0.1, set up as a new phone and ran the same test again (left the phhone on stanbdy for an hour) this time I found no usage at all. As soon as I ran jailbreakme and installed cydia the phantom usage came back.
I haven't even installed any packages yet, not even openssh.

And did you still have mail set up to poll every hour after restoring?
31 mins usage for 9 hours = roughly 3.5 mins per hour which falls in with your 4 mins per hour (roughly ;)).

Possible your mail boxes are/were taking 4 mins every hour to wake the unit, poll the box and get any mail?

Thanks. Would I lose any apps etc? ie. any possible side effects?

None that I can see. Nothing's changed at all. If something did screw up you could always just update through Cydia - the newer version is obviously there and will always be flagged with a badge in 'changes', just update if neccessary.

If you folks want to know when the next new version of Mobile Substrate is available but don't want to see version 0.9.3228-1 in the "Upgrade" list, you will want to make a change in this file:

/private/var/lib/dpkg/status

In this file, find the line that reads:

Version: 0.9.3209-1

Change it to:

Version: 0.9.3228-1

This will make apt (Cydia) think you have 0.9.3228-1 installed. When a newer version is released you will have the option of installing it.

If you want to actually install 0.9.3228-1, just go to:

Cydia --> Manage --> Packages --> Mobile Substrate --> Modify --> Reinstall

Then you will be up to date for real.

I appreciate that tip sidewinder. Having the badge icon on Cydia all the time certainly wasn't killing me, but it's nice to be rid of it without re-installing 3228. Thanks.

Downgrading to MS 3209 Worked for Me

I respect the work and comments of Saurik but downgrading to MobileSubstrate 3209 got me about an extra hour of battery life.
I've kept a battery use spreadsheet for the past 3 weeks, logging usage and standby times at consumption intervals of 10%. For the past 2 of the total 3 weeks of tracking I've been using MS 3209. To really push the battery I'm streaming audio over 3G to a Bluetooth speaker, doing light browsing, and have Mail & Facebook set for Push. I have a Winterboard theme and LockInfo running too. I'm running the battery down past the 10% warning almost everyday and have gone from about 6 hours of usage to at least 7 hours.
I won't be "upgrading" MobileSubstrate until I see that the next version won't take away that extra hour of battery life.

Or it could be not a problem with Mobile Substrate at all. Maybe 3206 is changing a feature which could be causing some other library/program to work differently? Just a guess! IMO, the current version gives me much better battery life than 3206!

"3206"?
