I'm starting to think maybe the NYT article is bait to get Apple to come out and show off how great their headset is. It's not going to work if the headset isn't real though. I guess this mess is what Apple gets for being so secretive.

I wonder if people will actually stop believing it's real if we get reports from "leakers" that it's been "delayed" again and it doesn't get announced this year. Remember, Apple has actually said a total of ZERO things to corroborate the existence of this headset.

I'm not saying it's definitely not real, but I am saying we've seen zero evidence for it but people have been acting like Apple has been running advertisements for it already.

I cannot WAIT to come back to this thread in ten years. It’ll be a monument to shortsighted internet commentary.

This is the second article by "employees and ex employees" about the headset.

It's almost as if the design team doesn't like being overridden by Cook and are making sure that he gets the blame if it's not a hit. News flash people, Tim Cook's career isn't going to be negatively affected if the headset fails.

People that are optimistic may be in for a bit of a shock. I don't get any kind of vibe except a bad one.

The die hard optimists might think it's a mirage or misdirection, to hide a big surprise.

What do you think, it's going to be affordable? Maybe they will sell them close to cost for some reason. It's possible (like to unload them eventually).

Refurbs at $2500. Go for it.

Apple Employees Voice Concerns Over Impending Release of Mixed Reality Headset

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple Inc. is set to announce the release of its long-awaited mixed reality headset, dubbed the Apple RealityPro, in the coming months. But some current and former employees have expressed concern over the company's decision to release the device in an unpolished state, targeting a questionable market, and at a premium price point.

According to multiple anonymous sources, Apple's CEO Tim Cook is pushing the company's employees to release the headset as soon as possible, leading to concerns that the device will not meet the company's usual standards of quality and polish. One current employee, who asked to remain anonymous, expressed frustration over the rushed development process.

"We're being pushed to release this thing before it's really ready," the employee said. "There are a lot of bugs and issues that still need to be worked out, but the deadline is looming."

The mixed reality headset market is still in its infancy, with few consumer-ready devices on the market. While some analysts have predicted that the market could be worth billions of dollars in the coming years, others remain skeptical of its potential. One former Apple employee, who also asked to remain anonymous, questioned the company's decision to enter the market at this time.

"It's a risky move, to say the least," the former employee said. "The market for these devices is still unproven, and it's not clear if there's really a demand for them."

Another concern expressed by multiple anonymous sources was the price point of the device, which is expected to retail for around $3,000. Some employees questioned whether consumers would be willing to pay such a premium for a device that is still largely untested in the market.

"It's hard to see who the target market is for this thing," one employee said. "It's too expensive for most consumers, and too unproven for enterprise customers."

Despite the concerns, Apple is forging ahead with the release of the RealityPro headset, which is rumored to feature both augmented and virtual reality capabilities, as well as advanced eye-tracking technology and a suite of sensors for spatial awareness.

Apple declined to comment on the concerns raised by its employees. The company is expected to make an official announcement about the release of the RealityPro headset in the coming weeks.

Personally, I think any corporation would love to have you strapped into their virtual world so they can monetize your entire existence within it.

This will be a success by means of FOMO, and it’s just that kind of peer pressure that makes an unnecessary (and possibly even dangerous) product sell.

I know baloney and traps when I see them, and this will only make those who are dependent on their phone and social media even more so, and further social isolation. But make sure you buy one so you don’t miss out!

It’s much more efficient than plugging the lightning to USB cable and dealing with a 10-year-old charging cable. It’s about aesthetics and design.

But you still can’t use the mouse while it’s charging, so what you have there is a considerably more expensive mouse with the same flaws as before.

Ah yes because a cellular phone and a VR headset are even close to being the same.... Apple loves customers like you...
I think he has a valid point. None of so called "experts" in this forum board knows what direction an unannounced product is gonna go. Every Apple product before announcement does get a lot of hate around here, for some truly bizarre and unexplained reason!! Just go back and read how Apple Watch was instantly going to flop before it was even announced and how late Apple was to the party. And please don't get me started on the woke Apple employees. More than likely the snow flakes who wanted to work from home indefinitely and the ones who felt disoriented on the Spaceship campus. People just never seem to learn from the pass, even though it keeps and it keeps repeating itself.

That would be great!, but fortunately, for parents and loved ones, too expensive, and so everyone will be spared from mind control, washing, or whatever. But there's still potential.

It’ll be another luxury that people will be socially manipulated into buying. The price point will be above most people’s means since it’s Apple and novel technology.

As usual, Apple will find 15 million ways to make this conveniently fit into your lifestyle and once the influencers get their hands on it (social proof), widespread adoption will begin. That’s the modern day marketing plan, and mark my words, people will eat it right up.

Meh, I don’t really want to jump into conspiracy land, but most people nowadays spend first and think later. Both about their purchasing decisions and about the intentions of the product/company. What’s a little extra credit card debt?

Also…parents are always looking for the next best thing to shut their kids up with. Toddlers already have iPads and AirPods as modern day pacifiers and that’s a conscious choice by parents.

Will this be the first flop of Apple in the last 15 years?
Apple already had a flop relatively-recently. That flop was the HomePod. The HomePod lineup seems to be okay now, but originally it flopped big. Flopped even before it was launched (was to be released in December of 2017, but was delayed and missed an entire Christmas/Holiday buying season).

The HomePod was a flop, but (I assume) everything is going okay with the HomePod lineup now. Siri is still… Siri, but the hardware is good at a good starting price point. (The first-gen hardware was good also, but at an awful starting price point.) Apple got that first-gen awfulness out of the way and put what they learned into the second-gen.

Gotta release the headset eventually. (Or never releasing it ever is also a possibility.) I’m not going to be buying the first-gen, but some brave souls will. Those early adopters can be the guinea pigs (and usual) and all of us who wait will benefit from their sacrifice in the second-gen and beyond. 😂

It's almost as if consensus among a team that large is impossible but some people can't accept they've lost the argument.

You're right that Cook will come out of this fine. In the end, it's the team's job to deliver. Going to the press and undermining the release isn't going to do their careers any good. This is just bad form by engineers who want to be celebrities for a day.

i don’t see it. I have an open mind but ultimately I don’t think people will want to strap something to their face on a regular basis.
As someone who wears glasses… I disagree, lol. People already do strap something to their face on a regular basis. 😂

Obviously I understand what you mean and I’m just joking. Although I’m also somewhat serious. If not bulky and comfortable enough (like glasses, sunglasses, or googles now) people will want to wear them (and do so on a regular basis). That likely won’t happen with the first product generation. But future generations of products… sure. There is nothing about a device for your face that is all that unusual right now. Billions (with a B) of people wear glasses and it’s not a big deal to do so.

A mixed reality headset has the potential be more useful professionally than the Apple Studio display or Pro Display XDR. It will just be a different set of professionals. Architects, Doctors, Engineers... people who do things in the real world as opposed to creating digital content, will find more use out of this than they find in the pro computers and accessories. Not to mention use in games. It will not be as successful as the iPhone. But then, nothing will. Doesn't mean Apple should only invest if it can be as big as the iPhone.

Seems like some need to lower their expectations. This isn’t designed to change the world on day one. It will fill a need for pros and pave the way for incremental improvement to become a consumer device later. Selling a million units in its first year would be a huge success because that means it resonated with some general consumers already and primed specialty component suppliers to start producing higher outputs. It is like going to retina displays when all of Apple’s competitors were still on 72 DPI.

The solution in search of a problem logic is nonsense. This isn’t an Apple Watch, but a general purpose device. The problems it solves is the same class as the iPad or the Mac. Eventually it will make inroads in to the same spaces as it evolves.

And if the product succeeds? He retires rich?

Even then he could retire forced with a very big “thank you for your services” package. Most of the time investors don’t like these kind of risks. So even if the product succeeds - and I seriously doubt that if the rumors are true - Cook’s position might be up for grabs.

This isn’t just some AirPower like accessory that you can fail with and come back stronger later. If this product fails after huge investments, because it was released too early it destroys the entire product category for Apple in the near future and investors lose billions.

"The video depicted a man in a London taxi wearing an augmented reality headset calling his wife in San Francisco, sharing the sights of London through the husband's eyes."

Really? That was the sales pitch? Something you can do on any smartphone for a few hundred, but Apple wanted to make a device costing from 3 grand to do the exact same. Oh and you need a 'hip battery' so a cable running from the glasses to a battery pack on your hip.
It sounds like something from the 90's.. If Apple staff are concerned, and all it will do is the same thing as a smartphone, and it'll cost several thousand dollars. I can only see it flipping in sales.
I have a suspicion this won't be the next Apple Watch or iPhone or iPad or AirPods.

You can look at it from both perspectives and either make sense.

I actually expect this product to be a big commercial failure(!) initially because of the price tag and limited application.

And most reviewers and consumers will probably struggle to see the need for it.

But that’s the whole plan. Just get it out and have devs and early adopters help shape the path for it.

Over several many years it’ll develop into what I have to assume is as a fully AR/VR replacement for MacOS and iOS, controlled by gestures, head and facial movement.

Some 10 years after the first iteration launches, prices will come down to around higher end Mac prices and it will lose the battery pack and just be a big headset with the similar configuration options we’re used to see when buying Macs.

This will eventually replace both Macs and iPhones.
