What sort of work do you do that benefits from all of the extra ram? I’m going to buy one of these M2s at some point (soon) and am stuck on the 8 GB vs more, because it seems like there’s more disagreement between the 8-is-enough and the No-its-not crowds than there is between the Han Shot First and Shot Second groups.
Apple isn't the company for you then.I don't care what company you are, shipping any computer with less than 16GB RAM is absolutely ridiculous. To charge hundreds of dollars to upgrade to what a base level machine should be is even more ridiculous. Part upgrade cost $5, better increase the cost of the machine by $200. I'm so tired of computer manufacturers.
Those are long back order dates. Dang…All custom M1 Max models arrive two months earlier (July 20-27), while the custom M1 Ultra models won’t arrive until September 22.
The least Apple could've done is provide a high-end pre-configured model with 16GB of RAM. But no, they're all BTO only, meaning that majority of MacBook Airs out there will have only 8GB of RAM. Money making scheme to get people to upgrade sooner than they have to.I don't care what company you are, shipping any computer with less than 16GB RAM is absolutely ridiculous. Well ... shipping computers with less RAM is fine when they're cheap. When they're over 1000 dollars after tax, anything less than 16 GB of RAM is simply gouging the customer. There's no other way around it.I don't care what company you are, shipping any computer with less than 16GB RAM is absolutely ridiculous. The Mac isn't much of a player in the laptop/desktop computer segment. They've never had more than about 10% of the market, and last I saw were currently under 8%. Even if the M1/M2 chips might be top tier processors, the market doesn't buy $2000-$4000 computers. The way consumer purchasing power is decreasing, the idea that Mac market share will increase seems unlikely in the near future. Can only imagine how fast Mac market share would be growing if Apple wasn’t supply constrained.
You do realize that in market with hundreds of companies having 10% of market share is quite an achievement? The Mac isn't much of a player in the laptop/desktop computer segment. Most of that because Apple doesn't play in the sub $500 market. A bulk of PC market is in that segment, and also with enterprise market (where Apple is not really interested in playing either). Apple doesn't have the marketshare, yet similar to smartphones, Apple is garnering most of the profits with their premium pricing and shorter upgrade cycle (compared to Windows). The Mac isn't much of a player in the laptop/desktop computer segment. And sensible pricing for memory & storage! Can only imagine how fast Mac market share would be growing if Apple wasn’t supply constrained.
But Apple is not after marketshare, they're after profit margins. Take the smartphone market, where Apple is not the majority, but rakes the most profit. Can only imagine how fast Mac market share would be growing if Apple wasn’t supply constrained.
I’m a geotech too… Why the hell are you using a Mac?I do design of structures, earthquake modeling, and soil response analyses. I also do 3D modeling less frequently but enough to warrant a good enough setup.
They’re somewhere in 4th-6th place depending on the year. Dell, Lenovo, and HP consistently round out the top 3 with ~20% each depending on the year/quarter. Apple, Acer, and Asus round out positions 4-6 with 7-10%. Their achievement really isn’t their market share, it’s their margin. You do realize that in market with hundreds of companies having 10% of market share is quite an achievement?
Correct. Apple has specific positioning for their brand and products, and such, they’re actually not that severely affected by the pandemic and other economic events. I mean they’ve been breaking revenue record quarter over quarter through the pandemic years… Apple has no interest in the lower segment. In a world where expendable income is decreasing for many people, I don’t personally see how Apple will expand their market share. They’ve always had the same smaller group of customers with deep pockets, so they’ll likely continue to hang around the 8-10% share they’ve always had.

Indirectly yes they should, for soldered RAM, SSD and glued battery. Planed obsolescence, and that way users could simply self upgrade. This is unconscionable. The EC ought to fine Apple over this.
Until they release Stage Manager II in 2024, then you’ll need at least 24GB.16 is more than a sweet spot for majority of people and will be for a long time.
I can only imagine how much better off we would be as a country if companies hadn’t outsourced their production to foreign sweatshops and hadn’t abandoned their manufacturing capabilities to make more profit. Can only imagine how fast Mac market share would be growing if Apple wasn’t supply constrained.
