Power-wise, yes, but there are other aspects of the new Air that make it a much more compelling option for me. If I'm buying a machine to last me another 5+ years, I'd prefer one that's not using an already 6-or-more-year-old design.
Then your best bet is probably the $2,000 pro. New design, M1 Pro/M1 Ultra chip.

Sure, I could walk into a store and get that right now. There are plenty of options if I compromise on what I'm buying in some way. But ultimately, I'd prefer to just get the machine I actually want.
But would you rather wait until August and potentially go on your trip with something you wish you had, or would you rather get something that's arguably better than the M2 Air anyways?

I do design of structures, earthquake modeling, and soil response analyses. I also do 3D modeling less frequently but enough to warrant a good enough setup.
I’ve had 3D optical simulations that have sucked up virtually all the RAM of a PC with 128GB and effectively hosed the operating system. I had one simulation I needed to run in Lumerical which I couldn’t because it needed 1.5TB of RAM. 3D physics simulations can really suck up a lot of memory.

As soon as Apple part shortages clear up it will clear up for >$1,000 PC vendors also. Apple's share isn't necessarily going to grow if most of the decline for the PC market is in the sub $1,000 system price sector. The PC market is also in a transition cycle. The higher end mobile/lapotp Intel Gen 12 and AMD Ryzen 6000 have been rollout constrained ( similar issues that Apple is dealing with).

Apple will continue to get Windows switchers to get growth but also offering something that has problems for folks that need Windows specific apps. The switcher rate isn't necessarily going to increase substantially.

Windows PCs units have been flat or declining for years outside of the COVID bump. That’s over as Q1 sales figures reported. Macs are growing and taking market share.

I'm moving to a new country. The Air is slightly cheaper here in the US than it is there, plus I'd possibly be able to get the back to school deal. But yeah, the 14" Pro is way overkill for what I need, and the M1 Air and M2 Pro are missing some of the things I want — better design, magsafe so that I don't have to sacrifice a port, fast charging, etc.

A couple more months of using my current machine wouldn't be ideal, but I'd consider it less of a compromise than upgrading to something that's not really what I want in the first place.

You have it figured out. 14 pro is a machine not many people need.

Drop the 5+ lifespan requirement. With the rate of change IMHO that is not a reasonable strategy.

What's so unreasonable about it? My 2012 MacBook Air still runs fine for everyday tasks. When I needed more graphics power for a new type of development I got into, I upgraded to a Pro in 2018. Now 4 years later I'm upgrading to a M1 Pro for a variety of reasons, but it's not as if I absolutely must do so this year.

Lol, what? My current laptop is reaching the end of its 6th year. It still works, but Apple is dropping new OS support for it. What on earth gives you the idea that 5+ years is an unreasonable lifespan for a new laptop?

It wouldnt be hard for Apple to create the parts in china and stockpile them in another country for assembly. The only problem is they would make less profits that way since no other country will work for such little compensation.

If you are looking to buy higher-end configuration, or 16-24GB RAM and 512-2TB SSD, spend $300 more and get the real 14" MBP. You get a bigger screen with XDR and ProMotion, more I/O (MagSafe, 3rd Thunderbolt/USB, HDMI, SDXD), better webcam, and probably faster performance.
Well, it is more than 300 $. In my configuration the difference is 500 $.

Worse: the weight of the 14" is much higher, battery life is much worse and I miss the very practical touch bar.
BTW: I don't like the feeling of the 14" case. Somehow it is uncomfortable to pick up the 14".

"delayed" - they were always going to take this long, EVERYTHING is taking this long at the minute.

Seems to me that they are getting highest average selling price they can before launching MBA and later the Mac mini and iMac.

Might explain why the desktops are not being replaced at the moment
What desktops? they've all recently been updated.

The inevitable M2 mac mini and M2 iMac 24. Seems to me that the supply chain may be having a hand in dictating launch dates.

They're no where near due yet. They're following the same path as the initial launch. The first M1 systems were launched Nov 2020 - the iMac did come out till April 2021 - and hasn't been in stock properly since. If they were playing to the supply chain they'd have delayed stuff a lot more now as some of the 16-inch MacBook Pros ordered in November are only arriving in stock this week. They SHOULD be delaying things but they're not - 18 months is roughly the release schedule always planned - the problem is you're then not able to get hold of it for another 3-6 months, at least with the higher specs.

I think they'll keep the Mac mini at M1 along with the entry level MacBook Air, it makes sense to have two systems and an iPad still using the original M1, also they need binned M1 chips from the Mac mini to put into the MacBook Air for it's 7-core GPU version.

24GB is todays sweet spot what 16GB has been until now.
Don’t start the f••• circus that people did with 8 vs 16GB before.

I have 32GB it’s to much but 16GB is to little so if I would order now, we’ll the air 24GB is perfect as a developer / specialist
Agree, even on windows, 16GB is the old 8GB.. now it's 32GB or nuffin'.
