Hey guys! This definitely happened to me. Here’s a quick tip. When you get your “Loan Approved” email from Citizens One, login and add the new loan to your account and change your payment method back to your Apple Card. Love you all and happy iPhone day! ♥️😊
That’s what I ended up doing. So my upfront payment was charged to another card. Sucks though for people who only have an Apple Card.

Same thing happened to me. After purchase with a different card, I logged into (for the upgrade program) Citizen One and added my new finance account and changed my payment information to my Apple card. Hopefully that works since they dont withdraw payment until shipping.

I had the issue ordering at 5:00 AM PST. I ended up having to use my AMEX which annoys me. Apple's own card would not work which means no 3% cash back for me.

did two pre-pre orders on Wednesday.

then got on this morning right at 8:00AM and had the same error messages as everyone else.

the only card I have is the Apple Card so I couldn’t just switch to something else.

I got frustrated after two hours of trying and just gave up. I’m not wasting my time anymore on this.

first time ever since the original iPhone that I will not have upgraded.

Apple lost out on two iPhone preorders today because of their crummy system.

if Apple was a premium company, they’d reach out to every card holder after the issue is resolved and offer them the ability to still purchase a launch day iPhone.

now I’m wondering if I should dump the Apple Card and pick something with better rewards.

I'm guessing you can still go in and change the payment method on the Citizen's One loan for the iPhone upgrade program to the Apple Card after the fact. Just not sure if that would still garner the 3% on every monthly payment.

Same here. It’s disappointing to go through the whole preapproval process and then run into payment problems with the card you have already been using. I ended up calling Citizens One afterward and changing the payment info to my Apple Card. I’m not sure if that will apply to the first payment, but at least going forward it will be 3% cash back.

Haven't tried ordering the new one yet but still see a lot of irony in the fact that my Apple Card was denied due to unusual activity when ordering an iPhone for my wife. Sure, there is no possible way an Apple Card holder would EVER order an Apple iPhone...

Not to worry, everyone! Tim Cook has said there are great Apple Card updates in the pipeline. This the best Apple Card ever and Apple can’t wait to see what you do with it.

One more thing: the Apple Card Pro is Coming Soon. It will be the most pro Apple Card ever released by Apple. The Apple Card Pro is 20% more pro and will completely change the way you use your Apple Card. Nobody does pro like Apple does pro.

Had this issue since it launched this morning. Tried countless times. Just tried again now and it finally went through. Maybe they just fixed it?

Update! Apple and/or Goldman Sachs seem to have resolved the issue and my Upgrade Program purchase went through. Had to choose pickup because the mail delivery wouldn't have been until mid October but I will have phone on launch day.

It’s just a really poor customer experience. I don’t know who dropped the ball here bit I hope Tim Cook is chewing somebody out.

"Successful" Resolution for an Apple Card and iPhone Upgrade Program (through Citizen's One) user here with the same issue of having everything ready to go for the final pre-order step this morning through the app:

I was finally able to place the order using my Apple Card and the Apple app at 1:28 PM Eastern. I didn't login to Citizen's One as I refused to forego the 3% cashback on the first charge. I had called Apple Card and they said they couldn't even see the authorization declines. I called Apple directly and they weren't able to be of any further assistance. I now have a ship date of 10/18-10/25. That kinda stinks since I was ready to go at 8 AM Eastern with a 9/24 delivery date.

Long time apple fan with an Apple card and Apple upgrade plan. Did my pre-order 2 days ago, and today nothing worked. Failure to process the order for 4+ hours and still no resolution. Called customer service at Apple, Goldman Sachs, and Citizens One. Nobody has any idea and they have no resolution. No one cares. This is what Apple customer service has become. You would think the Apple card and the upgrade plan customers would get an express lane. Instead, we're still in the garage as shipping dates are creeping into November. It's a perfect FAIL on Apple's part.

So I paid off my upgrade plan and will stick with last year's model. As an owner of every model, this will be the first year I skip.

I plan to cancel and re-order (I don’t want to deal with changing credit cards after) but Apple support said it could be 24 hours before I’m able to cancel and-reorder. Boo.

You’d think people on the upgrade program who get a new phone every year would be front of the line. I guess the ones who don’t use an Apple card are fine. But is is an epic fail on Apple’s part. The customer has a relationship with them not GS or Citizen’s One.

And now apparently some TV+ users are getting a recap of the first episode of season 2 of the Morning Show at the beginning of the episode hence spoiling the episode. Eddy Cue can retire any time now.

That's all a bit of an overrection just because you couldn't get launch day delivery, isn't it?

My Apple Card works again now, so that's good news!

However Citizen One is still rejecting my "loan" despite 811 credit score and pre-qualifying. I called them and they said some information couldn't be automatically verified and they can do a manual review within 1-3 days.

Mind you I've successfully completed this same process for my whole family with all the same information every year iPhone upgrade program has existed.

This year, I assume we now won't get our phones for another month or more. And then next year we'll have to wait a month past launch or pay an extra month ahead.

Major bummer. Maybe it's time to stop buying new phones every year and just use them until they die.

It seems like this is related to purchases that are something more complicated than just clicking Apple Pay and paying for the phone. I guess the upgrade program, or loan program, or installment program, or whatever all that stuff is. Nothing unusual happened for me this morning when I used Apple Pay to pay with my Apple Card. I bought an unlocked iPhone and paid in full. I wonder if others above had trouble with regular transactions like that, or if this is really limited to transactions with more hair around them.

I'm pretty sure that the upfront costs (taxes + early upgrade payment) will still be charged to your original card and not receive the 3% off. Your monthly payments will be charged to your Apple card and receive the 3% off. Sucks, but at least i was able to secure my 13 Pro 1TB for 9/24 delivery. I'll pay the extra $6.50 for that!
