It's not just the extra $300. Which is a lot for a color premium. It's also heavier. And tends to scratch more (the metal). Honestly even if the Aluminum and Steel cost the same, I'd prefer the aluminum model (and assuming color didn't force me one way or the other). I also use the smaller model, again, because I don't want my watch to be heavy.
The Sapphire glass on the higher end models scratches much less than the display of the aluminum model. I also do not think that the aluminum scratches less than stainless steel and titanium.

With pre-orders for the Apple Watch Series 7 opening today, dissatisfaction with Apple's new color options has been expressed by some customers and pundits on social media.

apple-watch-series-7-aluminum-colors.jpg

The aluminum Apple Watch Series 6 was available in Space Gray, Silver, Gold, Blue, and (PRODUCT)RED aluminum color options, while the aluminum ‌Apple Watch Series 7‌ overhauled the lineup of colors, and is available in Midnight, Starlight, Green, Blue, and (PRODUCT)RED.

These are the same colors offered with the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13, except there is a Pink option instead of Green. The new iPad mini is also available in a mix of colors, mirroring Starlight and Pink from the Apple Watch Series 7 and iPhone 13, carrying over Space Gray, and introducing a new Purple color.

The Apple Watch's Blue and Red tones have been slightly tweaked from last year's offerings, while Green is a totally new option. Midnight replaces Space Gray with a very dark navy, while Starlight replaces Silver and Gold with a subtle champagne color.

With such significant changes coming to the Apple Watch's color options this year, some customers have expressed confusion and irritation with the new hues. The replacement of Silver and Gold with Starlight has attracted particular ire, with some fans of the previous options being disappointed with the single new champagne-style color. Some fans of Silver have criticized Starlight for being too warm, while some fans of Gold have found it to be too desaturated.

While there are still Silver and Gold stainless steel Apple Watch options this year, Space Black has been replaced by Graphite, except on the Hermés models.

Stainless steel Link Bracelet users have also noted incongruity with some Series 7 models. This is particularly evident with the Graphite Stainless Steel Apple Watch, which no longer matches its accompanying Link Bracelet.

Although the Link Bracelet is a stainless steel band designed to twin with a stainless steel Apple Watch, some users have enjoyed using the band with the Silver aluminum Apple Watch in previous years. With Starlight replacing Silver, some users have noted that the cool silver of the Link bracelet now clashes with the warm tone of Starlight.

Other mismatching band and casing combinations have been noted by users across various social media platforms and websites, with some claiming that the Series 7's colors mismatch with more bands, more severely compared to the color options offered in previous years.

There is now an unprecedented level of fragmentation with Apple's color options across its product lines. The iPhone 13 and Apple Watch Series 7 now contrast with the iPad Air and AirPods Max models, as well as the 24-inch iMac and iPhone 12, with other devices like the iPad mini overlapping the divide.

Apple effectively now has three separate color palettes for its devices, in addition to the pre-existing tonal differences with the same shade that was common to see with the likes of Space Gray. Other product lines, such as the iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and HomePod mini, also no longer have any matching colors with the aluminum Apple Watch Series 7 or standard iPhone 13 models. This appears to have irked some users who like to have matching colors across multiple Apple devices.

As yet, there are no rumors about what colors Apple's redesigned MacBook Pro and Mac mini machines could be available in. When they do arrive, likely at an event later this month, there may be some more clarity about Apple's plans for color options going forward.

The lack of harmonization between the iPad mini 6 and the iPad Air 4 makes zero sense as Apple could have easily matched a portion of the Air 4 palette and added the purple to the Air 4 choices.

The lack of a silver along with no pink, purple or rose gold is a huge miss, especially for the female sales demographic, which Apple addressed with in the iPad mini 6, iPad Air and iMac color palettes. I love the green watch color, myself, but these colors are all very dark and apparently Starlight is just not going to catch on. I like it myself, but it’s an outlier color.

The iPhone 13 also needs a purple and a lighter green as well, all these colors skew dark, except the pink. Not everyone like pink.

IMHO, Apple needs to harmonize their palettes and do it soon. The current palettes are too chaotic and don’t address obvious gaps in some product lines.

Well, I expected Series 7 to have the cheap flat-edged look of Prosser’s renders, but I haven’t expected of Apple to change colors.

As for that, I think some of S7 colors are outdated, such as the green which reminds me strongly of now 2 years old iPhone 11 Pro.

All in all, I’m truly happy with the blue Series 6 I bought a few months ago when my 1st gen Huawei Watch ticked their last tock after 5-6 years.

Is that Nike watch space grey? I don’t need stainless steel for running (although not in market this year…so hopefully a one time event).

Really glad Apple is getting flak for this. Their Apple Watch release specs have been terribly fragmented and are going in the wrong direction. Whoever handles that need to be replaced.

I like the sport loop, but hate the colors on all the options for the series 7. Can't I just get a plain old black one?

Will the old 44mm bands fit on the 45mm series 7.

You can only order the graphite stainless steel with a blue band or a milanese loop?! I just wanted the black solo loop. I wish Apple would just sell the watch on it's own and let you buy the band separately. I'd be fine just using my old band until supply constraints ease up and I can get the band I want.
They do. Go to the Watch page on Apple and search for "create your style"

First world issues?
Everything on this website is a first world issue. The watch is designed as a fashion piece, and there are six generations of pre-existing bands that these don't match.

Yes, what color your watch is is a primo first world issue. But we live in the first world, and this is an expensive purchase that changes the standard options. People are allowed to say they're unhappy with a retail offering without having to be in a refuge camp :)

Yes. 44 and 42 mm bands will fit on the 45 mm series 7.

That's deep.

I’m unhappy Ferrari sell cars that aren’t red - like a normal person I will get over it.

The Apple Watch shape is iconic - it’s never going to change.

I’m not as concerned about the color as I am about the shape. Round watches are so much better looking. Put out a decent looking round watch and the sales would double.

I agree - then it wouldn't look so much like a nerd computer on the wrist either.

Surely they could adapt WatchOS for a round form factor

Because now to get plain silver, gray, or gold, one has to select the more expensive stainless or titanium cases.
Oh sorry I see you meant changing the standard neutral color options to stainless steel or Ti, you didn't mean changing the aluminum colors to make money. You're right, gotcha now.

Literally the only reason why I can’t get one. I really, really needed one because I’m still on Series 0.

The lack of black or silver is unbelievable.
FWIW the Series 6 is still available in many places besides Apple. It's the same price as the 7, but there's legitimately not enough difference to make the 7 worth it. The display goes farther to the edges. zzzzz.
