just got mine today. Fed Ex guy banged so hard on my door I realized I had overslept to the time of 1:45PM.

Me too...well not that late but i did over sleep. Dog barked waking me up to the Fed Ex lady, who delivered my first iPad, banging on my door. Almost didn't make it in time but all is well, delivered two days ahead of the tracking information :)

Guys, shipments are in by no way guaranteed by order time. Come on.

They ship these things in gigantic pallets. There is a lot that goes into operations and logistics in shipping these things out. Some factors being...metro area, sales within that area, etc.

They need to optimize shipping to keep costs low while shipping max number of units.

Yep, it's not like they have someone sitting there with a clipboard and a pencil saying "Ok, John here in NY ordered 10 minutes before Bill in Montana... so make sure he gets his first."

Patience, grasshoppers. The world is a mess right now. Slower manufacturing and shipping times aren't unreasonable, considering.

Thank you. +1

It's also important to note that no other technology company has had to supply these INSANE demands on opening weekend. Think about it. They will end up pushing 1million plus units in the first 3 days...they would have had to manufacture these months earlier.

Opening week is 1 week out of a year+ long product cycle. Why would they start manufacturing months back just to meet this demand? This means...higher costs upfront, less time for R&D, leading to much longer product development cycles.

Unless Jony Ive can bend space and time, it's almost physically impossible to meet initial launch demand. More importantly, it's not financially viable.

I had a result with mine, last year I ordered it through Bundlebox http://tinyurl.com/ipad-too to London, and there were loads of delays due to the volcano... this time I just saw on MacRumors that the ordering had opening early... so ordered mine at about 9AM on Friday GMT....it arrived in my Bundlebox this morning, so will be here on Friday, and will cost me about 40 quid more than waiting I think

How?

Name one computer company that needs to deal with this type of demand, at launch.

I'd say they are doing pretty damn well. It's just selling like hotcakes.

They created this level of chaos - for the demand.

1) Asking folks to log on in the dead of night.
2) Parading folks in front of stores for 5 pm line ups.
3) Giving Targets and AT&T stores five (5) units! Why even bother?
4) Not communicating what models Best Buy would carry and where.
5) Plus selling to the US first for "professional exporters" to take advantage off.

They could have setup a reservation system, an App, Fedex, anything.

Where is the loyalty to the fanboy with a day job?

I own thousands of dollars of Apple gear, it would appear that they no longer value your time, just your money.

This is dead on! I failed to order at midnight. I could not get the day off work, and now I have to deal with it!:(

This is the first time I am on the short end. People that are receiving their iPads today are the smart ones. I just felt that it would be like last year where I was able to walk into an Apple Store and get one. Boy was I wrong. By the time I reacted, the wait time was already 3 - 4 weeks on shipping.:(

Don't get me wrong but...

1) is better for the fanboy with the dayjob, rather than doing so at work, not working at the day job.
2) 5pm is easily better than 9am, for the fanboy with the dayjob, getting off work early compared to missing work altogether.
3) no person looking to lock down an order would ever consider these stores anyways.
4) why supply their retailers with more units giving them smaller margins? lol
5) apple had nothing to do with this.

Also, how would preorder have helped, realistically? They knew what levels of inventory they were dealing with, and probably had a fair estimate of demand. They would have been out of preorders as quick as shipping pushed to 2-3 weeks regardless. Essentially, those people online first 'preordered.'

Edit: and with any other product, it's first come, first serve. People just have to deal with that. No one 'deserves' access to an iPad above someone else...lol

I now get to laugh at all of the people who said there would be next to no lines come Friday 5pm. Expecting to stroll in on Friday at 7pm or any time Saturday and pick one up no problem. I laugh at you now!

BTW, got mine at Target at 5:02pm.

Sent from my iPad

Good news: Mine arrived.

Bad news: I'm at work until 6.

Oh well, at least my wife is having a good time with it. :D

Strong sales aside, Apple really screwed up this launch.

We know you only post to get a reaction, so its my bad for biting, but you are aware, I guess, how much of a desperate loon you appear? ...or perhaps you are some really funny guy thats into quirky, sarcastic humor that just no-one else gets.... No?

So basically, my ipad arrived today in Chicago.. it was shipped the 14th from China.

However, my orange cover which was shipped a day earlier is STILL in alaska in transit, and will not arrive till the 18th.

Seems fedex is giving priority to the actual ipad instead of its accesories?
Anyone else have something similar happen.

...so you call up an Apple store - they tell you they are opening at 9 and to be there before 9 and yo get there at 7 to see a hundred plus people already in line and when you finally get inside at 9 - they only had 50 ipad 2 and will repeat this over and over in al the apple stores -

If you pre-ordered - 4-5 week wait now.

Come on people - jump thru the hoop - do it again - .......

wish that were the case. Received cover on the 15th and today received the Camera kit and ipad still not shipped yet. I had to reorder at 7am on the 11th b/c when i originally ordered at 4am ET my credit card decided to decline my order b/c it seemed like a suspicious activity. I had even called my credit card 2 days earlier to warn them not to restrict my credit card on the 11th with date, merchant and total info i was spending b/c i was making a purchase that morning and still they declined my order!!!! Very frustrating and now have to wait longer b/c of this!!

looks like our iPads are finally shipping

Order Date: Mar 11, 2011 at 01:49 AM PDT

"Prepared for shipment."

This is a 16GB Black WiFi model.

I've never understood how someone can live their whole lives without an "iPad 2" and then the moment it's released they HAVE to have it, and are willing to spend hours in a line in order to get their hands on one as soon as possible. Give me a break, you've gone 18, 19, 30+ years without one, why not wait another month or so and avoid all the stupid lines?

I don't know, I guess I'm just not one of those people that has to have the latest and greatest as soon as it's released.

How about going to the FedEx facility and picking it up in person? I know that UPS allows that if you call them up and let them know you're coming.

ft

That's a GREAT and logical suggestion. I had the same thought this morning when I checked my tracking info and saw my 2 iPad's sitting at the FedEx distribution center and apparently missed today's delivery truck. So I called FedEx to ask them if I could swing by to pick them up, as I have done before with other items.

Their response (no lie):

"We have an agreement with Apple that prohibits us from allowing you to come and pick it up until after the first delivery failure. If we try to deliver it and you're not home to receive it, we'll leave a notice and only then can you arrange to come here to pick it up."

I could see how this would be useful for things like LAUNCH DAY when Apple doesn't want the product in the hands of the consumers until the day they determine, but come on, POST launch day, what the hell does it matter to Apple?

Maybe I was speaking to someone who was applying an Apple LAUNCH DAY restriction generally, maybe not. Either way, it cheezed me off because of the non-sense of it.

In the end, the iPads ended up making a later truck and they got delivered. So it's all moot except for the FedEx customer service experience re: the Apple (alleged) restriction.

12:55 am Friday - placed order for two iPad2's with 64GB memory and WiFi + AT&T 3G. On truck today for delivery! Was quoted 3 -5 business days to ship, original ETA was for Friday 3/18 delivery, happy to say the FedEx planes had a tail wind from China to Alaska to California to where I live, Oregon. The smart covers arrived yesterday.

Mind if I ask when it was supposed to arrive? seems awfully fast for the estimates I've been seeing and which mine has. Mine shipped this morning and they are predicting 6 days for a march 22nd delivery. I'm here in Portland too

Got mine today! A day ahead of what FedEx said. It was worth the wait ordering online and getting my Corp discount. :)
