I think part of the problem is the number of models.

Before there were 6 models, 3 sizes, 3G/Non-3G.

Now there are 48 models?

16gb, 32, and 64, plus white/black, and then wifi, ATT 3g, and Verizon 3G.

So I think the mix might be the issue. Hard to predict what people will buy/order. That is a huge complexity jump from the original iPad.

We just went into Best Buy and were number 56 on the list with a $100 deposit. They got 120 in their initial shipment and expect another in a few days. But out of 56 we were number 4 on our list, Black 16gb, ATT 3G.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Strong sales aside, Apple really screwed up this launch.

Yes they have struggled to sell any, massive failure.

If only the internet had built up the iPad 2 up, it might have been such a different story, long lines and selling out within hours.

If only.

Why not just do it all by pre-order?

Why doesn't Apple just take pre-orders and then ship them out (or make them available for pick up) all at once? people will still stand in line and they will get the press but everyone will not be pissed off.

Now the backlight bleeding and yellow screen issue posts will increase.

If any of you are in Tulsa OK. They have few models of the iPad 2 in stock today at the Apple Store, and no line.

I picked up my two replacement iPads today and they had received a restocking shipment this morning.

My smartcover was not being shipped so I got very upset and called CS, they apologized for the inconvenience and the lady said they would send me a free iPad.

lol jk

You have to understand that "full of win" sits on this site hitting refresh waiting for a new thread to appear so that he can post on the first page how Apple did wrong or is inferior. All because he hates Apple. He may not invest much money in apple but he sure does invest a lot of time in it.

I am mostly responding to suggest for him to think before spewing out general statements not based on facts.

He has stated a few times that he has no proof for some of what he posts.

Apple has plenty of flaws and I do not like some of the things they do or products they have. So, I wait until it meets my criteria, but I don't rag on them for not reading every wish off my lips.

Just by the law of averages it can't be that Apple is only bad.

If one wants to one can take apart anything with negative generalized bias when ignoring the facts.

One thing is for sure , he is not anywhere near production issues (I hope) or we wouldn't ever see a product.

If I ever had a screw up product like the ipad2 I'd be very happy.

The sheer amount of buyers who want whatever configuration makes it impossible to make everybody happy.

So, Apple decided to give people a choice.

IMO the best solution.

A lot of frustrated people would be receiving iPads right now if they had a little more patience when the pre-orders started. Instead, they saw 3-5 business days and freaked out because they had to have one on launch day, and now it will be weeks before they get their hands on one.

There's no other way to say it. I'm totally frustrated.

I should have ordered online. I was awake right when MR mentioned that orders were up early on the 11th. Now I feel dumb.

No dude, youre not. What's dumb is the fact that people had to wake up at 4AM EST to receive an iPad 2, 3 days after the retail launch.

PS: Check out Target and Walmart for shipments...those places are the best to go to.

I have a relative who is actually on a trip to China, and he ordered his iPad 2 online from China for delivery to his house. He got confirmation that it was like 30 miles away from him in China. I told him he should call Fedex and ask if he can pick it up in China. :)

The lack of understanding that supposedly intelligent people show regarding the complexities of the manufacturing/delivery chain is simply astounding.

I guarantee that there is no process in place that will allow one of a million end customers to show up at a factory to pick up a retail product. But have fun trying. :)

We received ours yesterday (March 15th). :D

It does have the yellow screen issue.

48 models????? Are iPad user all that stupid????

Perhaps the "4" was supposed to be a "1"...18 models is the right answer:

WiFi only: 3 (sizes) x 2 (colors) = 6 models
3G: 3 (sizes) x 2 (colors) x 2 (carriers) = 12 models

6 + 12 = 18

i suspect that everyone ITT received an original shipping date between 3-5 days?

mine was 5-7 days shipping, and i've not seen a single update since my order acknowledgment email

Should I?

I'm thinking about selling my late 2008 MbP to get an iPad2 3G 64GB. That or an AMD 6990. It sounds like BF3 will work fine on my 5870 and Crysis 2... well, it's obviously been dumbed down.

shipments by order number?

I think part of the problem is the number of models.

Yes, is seems as though many of the Wi-Fi and Verizon orders shipped within a few days, faster than the AT&T 3G models.

I can't help but wonder whether the haphazard, out-of-line-order shipping has something to do with the new order number randomization (described in this MR post). Many people are complaining that some who ordered Friday pm are getting shipped before some who ordered the same model Friday early am. Could it be as simple as that they're shipping the orders in sequential order number instead of by order time? Used to be, there was a monotonic relationship between the time and the order number. Sounds like a hack some inventory programmer would use.

I did the same. I was up at 4AM when they started to sell them but I was indecisive and didn't place my order until later in the day. The shipping date was April 1st. On Monday and Tuesday I drove up to one of the two Apple stores in Columbus (Polaris Mall) but they didn't get any in. I was going to drive up this morning, but I decided to stop at my local Target first to see if they had any. To my surprise they had three 32GB Black Wi-Fi's in stock and a 64GB White Wi-Fi (along with a ton iPad 1's). I bought one of the 32GB Black Wi-Fi models. I was really tempted to buy the other 2 as well and eBay them but I decided there were enough dicks doing that and decided not too. I also canceled my online order with Apple. My Smart Cover arrived in the mail yesterday. I am just waiting on the iPad 2 Dock I ordered from Apple which also doesn't ship until April 1st. So I would suggest checking your local Target stores when they open in the morning (ours open at 8AM).
