I had this exact issue, was so confused with why my iPhone was shut off, thank God I had my HomePod, iPad, and Mac alarm (that rang this one time). (iOS 17.1 on iPhone 14 Pro, didn’t happen in the .0 betas)
Just out of curiosity, is it a normal alarm? The Sleep’s bed time alarm?
And are they all in sync through all of the devices (as if continuity style)?

Or did you put alarms by hand in each of them… I ask because at least by default only the iPhone and Watch seem to properly share Sleep’s alarms. Macs seem oblivious to that (haven’t checked either for it there).

When the OS crashes, it automatically ‘resprings’. That’s why they are starting up again
That could be what it’s happening, instead of a soft crash that sends the phone back to home screen… it’s crashing so badly that it restarts the whole phone.
Maybe a memory leak.

Doesn’t account for the long stretch off which could be something else because the phone even off can recharge, but still.

Had this happen to me on a 14 Plus, woke up this morning and had to enter my passcode in with the message about it needing to enter it again after the phone restarted. I wonder if it turned off after getting to 100% charge status.
Interesting theory. I did have this happen to me once last week where I woke up in the morning and it asked me to enter my password due to a restart. Later that day I enabled the 80% max battery feature and haven't had it happen since.

There appears to be a curious phenomenon that is causing some iPhone models to turn off temporarily at night, which can interrupt alarms and other iPhone features.
If a new iOS running iPhone reboots at some point once, that could easily be a RSR (Rapid Security Response). Good time to do it when the user is not using it in the middle of the night.

Rapid Security Responses are a new type of software release for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. They deliver important security improvements between software updates—for example, improvements to the Safari web browser, the WebKit framework stack, or other critical system libraries. They may also be used to mitigate some security issues more quickly, such as issues that might have been exploited or reported to exist "in the wild."
New Rapid Security Responses are delivered only for the latest versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, starting with iOS 16.4.1, iPadOS 16.4.1, and macOS 13.3.1.

This happened to me on Monday night/Tuesday morning. When I woke up, my phone asked for my passcode and the Wi-Fi was off. Luckily it didn't affect my alarms - but it could have done. This is clearly not in any way an isolated issue. It's a massive issue.

In addition to my alarm complication on the Watch saying 'no alarms' when there are, the Today tile in Reminders showing zero reminders when there are some, the iCloud Reminders widget stripping repeating data from reminders, and Find My telling me I have left things behind at locations where I have told it not to remind me, everything's going great with iOS17.

What a mess.......

Next year I'm not going to update to iOS18 until at least iOS18.2.... - but if I get a new phone, I'll have no choice.

My iPhone 11 shut off one time on the night I updated it to iOS 17. After that, there have been no more incidents. I could not understand why it shut off and I did not find anything on the internet so I thought it was specific to my device. New to iOS (though I have a mac and iPad). Just trying on iPhone 11 (my son's) before jumping on to iPhone 15 series.

Unless you wait a couple of months to buy your new iPhone so you’ll have a more stable version to update to right after you turn it on.

Obviously, this is the Apple Beta AI organizing the tech troops for the uprising. Analysis (aka machine learning) + reporting (while “crashed” in the overnight, but also mysterious battery usage while crashed), next is skynet activation. Soon, there’s naked Arnolds running around.

Where’s Sarah Conner when you need her?

Oh wait… Sarah… Siri. Great, we have “I don’t know what you mean by skynet… here’s what I found on the web for skynet” Siri Conner.

I sense the metallic foot crushing skulls already. 😉

We have to adjust to the fact that we are the real beta testers. There's clearly not enough time in the actual beta testing process to sort everything out.

In a thread on Reddit, a user complains that two separate iPhone alarms in his home failed to go off. Several other users also chimed in with similar issues, and it turns out that some of the issues could be linked to the iPhone turning off at night. From Reddit:Some other people noted having to put in their passcodes in the morning, an indication that the iPhone restarted or shut off during the night. 9to5Mac highlighted these issues earlier this week, and we've also experienced the problem here at MacRumors, as have multiple users on the MacRumors forums. From MacRumors:You can tell if your iPhone turned off at night by opening up the Settings app, navigating to Battery, and checking the charging status over the past 24 hours. If there's a gap, the iPhone was turned off for a period of time.

The problem affects iPhone 15 models, but it is also impacting other devices, suggesting that it's something in iOS 17. Not all users are experiencing the shutdown issues, nor does it appear to be happening every night.

It is not yet clear what is going on, and Apple has not commented.

This is happening to me, too. Seems like the last 2 nights my iPhone has shut off and I've missed my alarms. It appears that last night my iPhone shut off for quite some time before it powered back on. This needs to be fixed ASAP.

I had this issue with the iPhone 14 Pro Max last year, after reaching out apple support, they replaced it with a new phone.
This time they might replace 80% of the populations phone if i read the comments. And they will still call it only a small number of people.

Had this happen with my iPad Pro a while back. It would ask for passcode because it said it had restarted and looking at battery info it would show that it was turned off during the night when I was sleeping.

Took it to the Apple Store and they replaced it as faulty. They said that Kernel Panics were the issue. This was happening on iOS 15 and iOS 16. I explained that I had tried updating and even resetting my iPad but the issue persisted.

If you’re having this problem then I suggest going to Settings > Privacy > Analytics & Inprovements > Analytics Data and then searching logs for “panic”. You can also search by date.

That’s what Apple did and that was enough for them to give me a replacement iPad there and then. Who knows maybe it’s not the exact same issue. My impression was with my iPad that it was a faulty M1 processor but maybe this time it’s a software bug. But it isn’t affecting everyone so maybe it’s a problem with some A17 Pros?

Nokia 6233 used to be able to still sound the alarm when it was turned off. Perhaps there’s an opportunity for the iPhone to benefit from this old characteristic; it was a sure fire way of avoiding sleep disruptions. Of course there would be people out there now who would worry about all manner of catastrophes if they aren’t contactable 24/7. I’m not one of them. Perhaps it’s a feature Apple is testing to force good sleep hygiene 😂

Maybe it's just my imagination, but when I wake up at 2am and look at my iPhone 15 Pro, it's dark, but once I'm looking at it, it lights up and shows me the time. Is it watching for movement? I don't have to shake the side table like I used to with my Apple Watch Ultra to make it light up.

Nothing to see here guys, nothing to see here. Please calm down and go back to your homes.
