I've been running Catalina on a Mac Pro 3,1 for a while now and I find that it has been the most stable and fastest OS I've run on it in a while. Mojave was garbage and I reverted back to High Sierra, which was also slow and buggy. From the comments it seems portables have the most issues.

Add to that, overheating issues on the MacBook Pro 16-inch when is connected to an external monitor, fans running at 5500 RPM like crazy, cracking sound issues and some other stuff.
My 2018 iPad 6th overheat as hell when I'm watching a video, the battery goes down from 100% to 99% and continues going lower, and this is with the iPad plugged on the wall. I have to turn the iPad off for 5 minutes.

EDIT: after I upgraded to iPadOS 13.4, it seems to not be happening anymore.

I think a lot of it is to do with sleep and wake issues - there are issues with the graphics card crashing if a message / email is received when asleep through power-nap, and also mounting network volumes after sleep...

Just looking back - I raised this via feedback assistant 12th November 2019 - so they have known about it since then, and just not fixed it...

Over the last few years Apple's QA has become sparse at best. Apple has plenty of money so nothing should ever be released without a Full Functional Test. Yes, the cost in time and QA is high but it helps avoid situations like this.

My experience: I got a new 16" MBP a couple of weeks ago. The following two mornings, I opened the clamshell and it crashed. It hasn't crashed since, but waking from sleep is sometimes sluggish. Often, the screen will be black. Clicking the trackpad won't do anything, but pressing the Touch ID button will cause it to wake.

Please, no whining, groaning, snivelling or outrage such as .... "But I am so deep into the ecosystem"..... "I am trapped in the ecosystem"..... "How can I live and function in my social circle if i stop using iMessage?.... "I have sunk so much money in Apple suff, I can't switch now".... and on and on.

I hate to say it but a very small number of users spending money elsewhere is not going to change Apple's behaviour.

Annoyances such as those in Catalina are enough to degrade the Apple experience, but not enough to make it worth switching for many people.

I believe people that install from scratch, then reconfigure/reinstall after, are in the best position to benefit from any macOS upgrade. for whatever reason, my experience has taught me that apple doesn't do a good enough job identifying user data migration and configuration ...

if you're having issues ... consider f-disking and reinstall/reconfigre everything from scratch.

PIA I know ...

Usually I do an upgrade in place over my existing installation in September/October when the new MacOS comes out and then when I have time in December/January I do a clean installation. Most of the time, any random issues from the upgrade go away, except this time with Catalina.. they haven't :'(

Just y'day I was supposed to update from 10.15.3 to .4 version but I was feeling lazy and didn't bother to do it.

Being lazy has it's own rewards it seems lol. 😆

I agree that unfortunately it will not change Apple's behaviour if a very small number of users go elsewhere. These "annoyances" in Catalina is only one of a large number of clear examples of Apple's declining quality control, lack of interest in anything other than stock prices, little regard for products that are not iPhones or iPads (and they even have major problems making these well) and the customer experience.

Those users who do not switch will have to live with their decision and hope that the compromise does not become untenable further down the road. The longer they stay in, the more entrenched they will be work flow wise and financially. It will be more difficult to switch later and more costly perhaps. I sadly think that hoping that Apple will improve is false hope.

To everyone who is talking about downgrading to Mojave/not upgrading from Mojave, etc.

It seems the same issue affects the latest update to Mojave 10.14.6

10.15.4... just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? How many more iterations of '10' are they going to use? Time to retire that beast and move on. 11's been waiting for... 17 years at least.

And yeah, I know no one really refers to it by "10.x.x" anymore but still...

I'm one of those users who decide not to switch for a million small reasons. I do believe Apple remains one of the only tech companies who takes privacy somewhat seriously. Then of course there is the plain fact that I find Android and Windows far less enjoyable to use than iOS and MacOS.

But yes I firmly believe Apple is more interested in its stock price than in creating the best experience for users. I think in the past there was a more healthy balance. In my view Apple making a heck of money is no equivalent to quality/the best for users.

I say this as yet again I have photos unexpectedly quit for the 100th time since upgrading to Catalina...

I was always BlackBerry at work and iPhone for personal use. Six months ago I bought my first Android - Samsung Galaxy S10e - and I am quite pleased with it. Where else do you safeguard your photos?

Start voting with your wallets..... no expenditures on Apple products and services going forward.

You have done this to yourselves. Tim did not come to your house and take your wallet. Although, some of you (perhaps not ones in this thread) said "Take my money now!!" every time a new product/service was mentioned.

Face facts and reality and change your purchasing behaviour now...

I agree. But i'm afraid Apple's response to declining Mac sales will be something like this...
"People have stopped using Macs and are using iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches, so going forward, we will be decreasing investment in developing Macs and macOS and focusing more on iOS, watchbands and bigger iPhones"

*shudder*

Between the "Trash can MacPro" and the "butterfly keyboards" kerfuffles, i thought they might have been looking for an excuse to give up on Macs and get out of the personal-computer business altogether.
