Tomorrow I go back to the Apple Store to pick up my second replacement band. Both of the first two wore out in exactly the same place at the side of the links that face down when I work at my desk. The second band showed wear after only a couple of hours work.
Apple are replacing it for free but I'm extremely disappointed. Can only wear the good band on weekends and if I forget to change it I can't wear it at all during work for fear it will happen again. Epic fail on a $1500 watch.
I assume in the store they were able to replace just the band or did you ship back the whole watch?

That is disappointing and is a concern as a fellow owner.

I recently returned the Space Black I had wore for 2+ weeks because the haptic was going south. The band remained perfect (thought I had had to exchange the watches before that time as I got a band that did not snap right the first time). I even wiped that band each day after taking it off, so you think that might have caused something to show up.

I'm surprised (but completely believe you) that the band is wearing as the DLC should be really durable, it should be the reason we're paying $1100. I think we should be able to wear the band whenever we want (within reason, not under water).

My brand new watch appears close to perfect, scratch on the clasp under a flashlight, but that seems normal on these, so not concerned by that, it must happen during manufacturing.

Also, will they want to replace the bands once we've had them six months? I'm less hopeful on that.

After your post, I think I should order me a black sport band ASAP, though then half of the $1100 I paid is simply sitting in a box not getting used, which is a shame too. The bracelet is a big reason for the watch, it does look great.

Where was the coating coming off at? I have not seen this yet but keep reading it's happening to people. Sorry to hear this. I totally agree you made the smart move. Now I'm worried about mine.

Not having any of these mentioned coating isues... had my SBSS for about 2 months now, and it's worn daily under my military uniform and at home. Only 'issue' I'm experiencing is the Stand notifications/sensor not being accurate, and some of the workout activities not registering as "exercise". Hopefully these are software issues and not defective sensors.

so Keyboard typing, , resting on tables/counters... something.is not every day use then , and as for hitting door boarders , what do you think i do walk with my wrist turned out wards , i have 22 other watches and i don't get marks like that apple watch got , I'm at home all the time as my wife is disabled. So around the house and dog walking is every day use in my opinion, i went to a local watch shop and the owner had a citizen watch he'd owned for two years with the black coating on coast him 500 pound , it had less marks on it and he wares it every day he looked at my pictures and said that just should not happen , the black had come of under light use , meaning the strap was not dented and you couldn't feel deep scratches on it , so no hard knocks , even apple said that wasn't meant to happen , you will see after a while , just like many others are . i didn't spend 950 £ on a watch to only ware out for best , every day use is normal use ,

"What do you think I do walk with my wrist turned out wards" - I don't know what the hell you do. I just said some common things that I see people do or mention in other threads. I've had my SBSS since the very first batch was sent out in early-mid May, so maybe "I will see", or maybe I won't. I know I wear mine at least 14 hours a day, typing, field work, in and out of pockets and jackets, hit it on tables - not abusive, but day-to-day work as an active duty military member, and mine has zero wear, let alone the marks you showed (and that's your second watch). So good, I'm glad Apple is working with you, and if it's something that's wrong with the product, they should fix it. Maybe their DLC process was pretty hit or miss. If it's something YOU'RE doing, then you need to change your habits. All I'm saying.

Has anyone tried placing the band in an ultrasonic cleaner (jewelry) to help remove any dust from between the links? Otherwise, I have no complaints at all, no scratching, no software or haptic problems at all for the two months I have been wearing it. (And that is a question not really a complaint) I am glad I am not having any of the marking problems a few others seem to be having.

I've been wearing my SS SB for a month now and no signs of any problems: no marking, no scratches, no dents, no scrapings...... Since I DO wear it every day I doubt that dust is going to have much opportunity to settle in among or between the links. I can see how it might, though, if someone swaps out bands and the SB link bracelet sits for a while. I love mine so much that I haven't even bothered to really check out other bands, although in the very beginning I had the idea that I'd probably pick up a green sports band, a leather classic band, etc., etc. I just adore my SB link bracelet and I guess I'm not ready yet to consider swapping it out with anything else yet..... Anyway, I've been very happy with mine and am glad that so far it hasn't shown any signs of wear-and-tear.

I finally put a black sports band on my Space Black. I really like it. I got the one with the Space Grey pin and although it is not advertised as such, the space grey stainless pin looks like a version of DLC to me.

It's much lighter, which has one drawback, I am more likely to forget I am wearing a watch, so hopefully it doesn't make me hit the case on something.

I like the sports band because at least don't have to worry about damaging the link bracelet. However, at the same time, it seems a bit silly to have paid for the nice bracelet with the watch and not actually use it.

I feel a bit like I'm wearing the Space Grey Sport watch with the sport band on it, since I have family with that watch, so I know it well. Nevertheless, it's a comfortable day to day look. I really love the sport bands, it's a shame the black one wants to show those wear marks, but at least they tend not be visible.

I'm going to pick up a dark blue / navy sport band as soon as they come out with one.

I did exactly the same, with the same band. I am happy to have a £39 band for day to day use. I picked up a blue one too, to mix it up

I have had my SBSS since the first ones were shipped. My link bracelet is losing the coating. I have attached the picture. Anyone else seeing it this bad? Will they replace my band if I take it to Apple? It doesn't seem as though it should be simply rubbing off like this.

Wow, that looks like you took a belt sander to it! I've had mine since 5/19 and I don't have a single mark or area where the coating has come off. That's obviously one of the few that got through with a poor quality DLC job. I can't imagine that Apple wouldn't replace it, unless you have been abusing it.
