Not necessarily. Here is a pic of my current watch, a Rado ceramic, after about 4 years of daily wear:

It is still 100% perfect and has, as you can see, a mirror finish. The Rado ceramic is twice as tough as steel. It remains to be seen how tough the DLC is.

Ceramic does not scratch, dlc does.

I finally put a black sports band on my Space Black. I really like it. I got the one with the Space Grey pin and although it is not advertised as such, the space grey stainless pin looks like a version of DLC to me.

It's much lighter, which has one drawback, I am more likely to forget I am wearing a watch, so hopefully it doesn't make me hit the case on something.

I like the sports band because at least don't have to worry about damaging the link bracelet. However, at the same time, it seems a bit silly to have paid for the nice bracelet with the watch and not actually use it.

I feel a bit like I'm wearing the Space Grey Sport watch with the sport band on it, since I have family with that watch, so I know it well. Nevertheless, it's a comfortable day to day look. I really love the sport bands, it's a shame the black one wants to show those wear marks, but at least they tend not be visible.

I'm going to pick up a dark blue / navy sport band as soon as they come out with one.

I bought the sport band when I bought my watch thinking the same as you, that I would protect the link bracelet. Problem is, like you said, I found myself never wearing it to protect it. I felt like I was wearing the sport watch with a heftier price tag. Lately I changed my frame of mine and I decided I'd wear it to enjoy it. I spent a pretty penny to get this watch and band and it seems such a waste to never use it, to "protect it". I find myself enjoying my watch so much more now, if it gets scratched then so be it.

Spot on. The first scratches are the hardest to accept, after that nicely worn DLC watches actually look great and have character. With mine I got Apple Care + , going to wear it like a normal watch and see how it holds up 6 months down the track, no babying it.

Pride comes before a fall. I have a hairline mark on mine now, picked up doing some light weights with dumbbells. I have no idea how it happened as they aren't particularly heavy!

It could be a surface mark rather than a scratch. I've tried WD40 with both a cloth and a dry spong. Any further suggestions?

Ill be honest with you, its the first of many scratches to come. Its the nature of DLC coating, tough but not scratch proof. Just wait for a few more scratches, and let it wear, it will have a cool look to it in time.

If it really bothers you, use a black sharpie. Simplest approach.

It doesn't bother me as such. You need to look really hard to see it. But if I could remove it, the better.

Was it on the watch case or the band? The band seems a bit more suspetible simply due to wrapping all the way around your wrist.

With the DLC, I think you would have rubbed it off by now if removable. A lot of times you can get deposits on the surface that look like damage, and they can wipe away. However, if it is truly damage to the coating, there is no way to remove it.

When I bought my SS SB watch last month, I, too, had the idea that I'd pick up a sports band and maybe another band or two "later." Well, now having worn my watch for over a month with the gorgeous black link bracelet I really don't think I'm interested in putting any other band on it -- I just love this black link bracelet so much! It's elegant, it's gorgeous, it goes with everything.....and, yeah, I paid a lot of money for it so why put something else on the watch and stick this in a drawer? I think not..... Just because Apple makes it possible to swap out bands doesn't mean that I really NEED to do so, and the longer I wear and enjoy this SS SB with the SB link bracelet, the less inclined I am to ever even consider doing so. :)

Sorry man, before I had mine replaced I tried everything, from paint, sharpie, various oils and crap. That DLC is molecularly bonded and nothing is going to 'smooth' it out. Either accept it or replace it.

Cheers guys. It is the clasp and the link next to it, which seem to be integrated?

It's not a problem, just a shame. You have to look very hard to see it.

The interesting thing to my mind is that the mark doesn't seem to be bare metal; if I look at it under light and move the strap around it doesn't 'flash' like I would expect exposed metal to do.

So how are we all feeling now the Space Black SS can be bought with a sport strap - would you have gone with this if it were an option to begin with and now feeling duped into spending more on what is no longer an exclusive version - or happy they are extending the range?

For me personally I'm glad I have the Space Black SS Link Bracelet, it looks and feels great and hardly use the sport strap I have, so not too upset by their move today.

I love the link band, but if I had gotten it now I'd probably go with the SB sport. Then buy the link band separately

I'm a bit annoyed as it was more exclusive that you had to buy them together. If they wanted to offer them separate, should have done it from day one.

I would have probably gotten the sport band if it had been that way at launch, and now I mainly use the sport band anyway.

I think it's cool that I have the link bracelet though and the box that shows the space black watch & bracelet as a set, something that will end up a bit more rare.

The good news is if our bracelets still work for generation 2, they should offer a space black with a sport band for us to buy into cheaper at that time.

I am surprised the space black stainless is same price as regular stainless and they makeup the $100 all in the bracelet. I would have thought they'd do $50 more on each rather than all on bracelet.

Shame to see once again the space black community has been screwed out of the Hermès bands.... frustrating because the blank band is beautiful!

You can't buy those bands without the watches, so you'd have to buy a whole new watch, anyways.

I didn't even realise, oops... but still, if it happens that these bands are available down the track, its a shame to see they haven't catered for the SB, but its not the first time this has happened

Yeah, it doesn't look like they will be offered later. The steel watch that comes with them is engraved with HERMES on the back, and you get the exclusive HERMES watches face that is unavailable for the rest of us.

I now see what Apple is doing in not allowing watch faces from 3rd parties in OS2. It's a branding opportunity for other companies that Apple signs.

I'm happy that I will be able to order a gen 2 with a sport band and still use my gen 1 band. I don't mind that you can get it with the sport band because I absolutely love the link bracelet and The DLC coating seems great to me so I'm glad I have the OEM band. Sport bands are nice but I'm totally happy with the link band and honestly don't even change bands unless I'm excercising.

The space black with sport band is a good thing - this implies you will be able to buy that permutation when the 2nd gen watch comes out.

Assuming that the 2nd gen watch fits the same straps (and personally I'm confident they will) this means we can buy a space back watch with a sport band and simply transfer our existing bands to the new watch body.

Torn between the SS with project red sport band and the space black SS with BSB.

From what I've read so far, the SS could be buffed out by a jeweler, but the Space a Black SS you have to live with or replace if scratched. Correct me if I'm wrong.
