That second photo you linked, is the only other one I have been able to find, aside from your own, that has the white material showing. I am guessing there are more out there, but were you an early adopter? Could it be something Apple quickly changed?

If you have an Apple store nearby, maybe you could ask them their thoughts on it?

Thats the only other pic I could find too, but you need to have light shining in the hole to see it so maybe that's why.

Anyway, I just bought it maybe 2 weeks ago from MicroCenter as a new open box item. It's not an early version, it is the one with the black sport band, so it's not that old.

I have AppleCare + on it and it functions perfectly, so I'm not taking it in. If anything happens I'll bring it in then.

Even if I look directly into mine with a very bright task light, it still looks a very dark gray. But if it's working fine and doesn't bother you, then likely not a problem :)

No, but neither was that other photo you posted of the Gen 1 with that white speaker hole. That is the only other picture I have seen with it white. It would actually make more sense on the silver models.
I understand, but I'd like to see a few first gen Space Black before I assume some don't have the white hole.

It would be interesting to see if any others have it. We need some folks with Gen 1's to post up!

I tried all kinds of search terms, but the one you posted above, was the only result I could find.

I have a first generation space black Watch and the Series 2 in black. I will post a picture of my first generation black watch shortly. But I can tell you right now, mine does not have a white hole.

Interesting- when you look at it in light, do you see the same black mesh that's in the speaker holes?

Now, if I am looking at the correct part here (from the iFixit Teardown), the speaker *does* appear to be white. I wonder if it is just more visible on some samples, or if there is a black mesh screen that could have fallen away?

No White hole. The mesh and everything is intact as it should be.

So, you looked at it closely in bright light and there is a mesh covering like in the speaker holes? You can see the texture of the mesh? If so I am questioning the effect on water resistance if my mesh is indeed missing ...

My iPhone 7 Plus camera can't focus that clearly and that's the best I could get it. But, yes, the mesh is definitely intact and there is no white hole at all. As a matter fact, I can physically even see the mesh grill when I look up at it close.

Damn. I have the worst luck with Apple products. I always get the weirdest, most obscure defects. Guess I have to decide whether to let it go or try to seek a replacement.

I wasn't going to say it, but you do have bad luck with iPads, iPhones and now the Apple Watch. I hope your issue with the Apple Watch gets resolved.

This is the best I could do with mine, with the iphone, using a bright task light and the flash. To do any better, I would have to pull out the DSLR, tripod and macro lens I think...

Edit: Again, as you pointed out, this is the Gen 1 Space Gray Sport though, not the SBSS, but it appears dark gray, not white inside. Likely the light going through the black mesh?

Thanks, I appreciate your and everyone else's help. I guess it's well established now that mine (and I guess the watch in the picture earlier) is missing the mesh covering. Sorry to take over the thread for this issue.

Threads get the derailed sometimes. But the whole point is to assist others with feedback or point them in the right direction for their concerns software or hardware related. No worries.

I had a better look at mine later with a magnifying glass and a bright flash light. I think I can see a little bit of white material above the speaker hole on mine. I don't think there is any way I could photograph it, but I wonder if maybe that has loosened and partially blocked the holes in some cases?

Do you mean you think your mesh cover has come lose and is not covering the hole entirely anymore? Maybe whatever adhesive holds it in place fails after some time since it's so small.

That wouldn't surprise if that's what it was. The mesh is secured by adhesive and in your case, yours fell out and what you're seeing is the dried remnants of the adhesive left behind. I doubt it's a serious issue being that port is small enough where it shouldn't be a problem. I would just avoid any major water exposure, if you don't decide to return it.

My guess is that is mostly cosmetic and maybe some slight wind noise resistance, but likely more the former.

Yeah, I don't think it's a big deal. Not worth the hassle Pershing anything if it functions well. If anything becomes of it, I'm sure Apple would take care of me with Apple Care +. At least we figured out this mystery

So... the more I thought about it, the more I said, I have AppleCare plus, might as well give an express replacement a shot. Received it this afternoon, and the new one also does not have a black mesh covering- just a plain white hole. What the hell?! They better not charge me for this replacement and determine "there is no issue" once they get my original watch. The person who set this up for me put the reason as "WP4-Sound- Internal Microphone", when I clearly said sound wasn't affected. I guess I will type a note and put it in the package to explain, along with the chat transcript of the conversation I had with the Apple rep. Getting sick of Apple.

Also, now it it's showing AppleCare + for the replacement watch but it does not show it until 2019 (like it is supposed to since I just purchased it recently), just until October 2017. Every minute it's another problem.

How strange. I've never seen this before. And I actually have multiple stainless Apple Watch models for comparison, and none of them have what your photograph indicates. Unless there something Apple is doing differently or they changed something in the manufacturing process, I have no idea why it would look the way it does. As small as that whole is, it's actually annoying to see the white versus having it being blacked out or with mesh intact.

If Follow up with Apple on this, please let us know what you find out.
