More importantly, it even mentions lightning to 3.5mm included in the box. I think it's excellent for users if Apple does include it, but I think it's a mistake for Apple as it shows there's a need for 3.5mm still and they've removed it.

There IS such a need. Most of the headphones out there are 3.5mm.

it puzzles me they call it iPhone 7, when its basically same design?

Still a brand new phone, casing is different, internals are different, improvements to speakers, screen, and home button to be expected. Performance increase should be significant, probably specific software features as well. At some point, we'll just have a screen, the casing won't even matter.

I get people don't want to lose their headphone jack.
It's clear they see the iPhone like the MacBook...a product to be used wirelessly the majority of the time.

But you can't really knock Apple if they're providing a free adapter ( a big 'IF').
They don't have to, especially if the earpods that come with it are lightning-based.
I only wished it was moving to the industry standard USB-C instead.

People said that about the 3GS too, and it looks pretty portly in 2016:
Its a personal preference thing, I thin the current 6s phones are too thin, but others do not. I also think for the plus size models, they're too thin for their own good, i.e., bendy

To charge, or to use my headphones... Ah, the dilemma, brought to you by Apple. Innovation at its' best!
This is an issue to the extent that people like to have their head tethered to a wall.

I found the 6 to be too thin, that is how I was holding it, was such that the it was less comfortable then thicker phones.

I like how my SE feels, its dimensions are perfect for me, I hope Apple doesn't make that thinner
For me, its not just the thickness of the phone, but the edges. The 5-series and SE are much more comfrtable and secure to hold with the squared edges. That's just how proprioception works. The curved sides of the 6-series are much less comfortable and secure in the hand.

Removing the 3.5mm jack is replacing it with..... an adapter to give you the same functionality that was built in? For what purpose? Maybe a slightly thinner phone?

So here's the thing. Apple is one of the biggest tech companies in the world today.

For what purpose you ask? I will leave it to Apple to answer that in 7 days. I can assure you of something though, they didn't become as big as they have because they removed connectors just to piss people off and have less functionality. Speculation from people not in the know (us) is pointless.

This. If there is no way to listen via wired connection and charge at the same time, I'm out. Yeah, it would be great to have a faster phone with a better camera, but at the end of the day, I would lose functionality over my iPhone 6 for no reason, other than Apple decided it such.

It's a really sad day when it seems that Samsung is the company driving innovation forward.
Me too most nights I go to sleep listening to music whilst my iPhone 6 Plus charges. I need the alarm in the morning- so if I can't charge and listen then I'm not paying $1000 for to me an inferior product

But I have faith in apple so surely there must be a "wow that's brilliant" feature we have all missed???

Several days battery life, wireless charging ( yes Samsung do already) or another charging port ?? I don't know but surely they're not this crazy??

Love all the apple fanboys defending taking away one of the most widely accepted standards today.
Say hello to "Apple iPhone 7 inovation" enabling a future with drm audio, lower quality sound and unnecessary clunky dongles.
What the world needs now is love--sweet love. It's the only thing that there's just too little of.

You're a fanboy lover.

You started it. I followed your lead. Cheers

OK - you're right. I apologise for that. It was stupid and immature.

Now.. insults aside.. please.. can you tell me how it's an advantage, or an improvement for most users to delete the headphone jack and just consolidate into the single lightning port. Why do it, other than to cost-cut, and force users into the purchase of new accessories? This is assuming Apple don't include a lightning -> 3.5mm adaptor in the box which, as much as I hope they do, I don't believe they will.

It ultimately also eventually forces people into buying headphones fitted with a proprietary connector that Apple owns / controls. And these headphones won't work on other devices you already own with USB-C or 3.5mm headphone jacks.

It's just so infuriating that I can't fathom why anyone would defend Apple in doing this.

For you, a dock makes sense, assuming you sleep in the same bed most nights.

No problem... you just buy a new car.

Have good headphones terminating with 3.5mm? No problem... you just buy new headphones.

Have a Mac or Macs without a Lightning port? No problem... you just buy new Macs.

Spending lots of money for no real net gain in audio playback solves all such problems.;)

Or spend a few bucks on an adapter.

(Also, it's not like using GPS usually requires charging. I use it for hours most days and don't do any extra charging.)

Good that they are remove the headphone jack, haven't used one in ages. Bluetooth works fine for when I am on the go and do not require the highest audio quality possible.

Why wouldn't they? Its the next phone in the lineup. Samsung does the same thing as well.

Honestly this looks like "Apple getting rid of 3.5 mm headphone jack" confirmed to me. :-(

I called it! Putting wireless headphones in would have been a colossal mistake. Using this adapter for a smoother transition to use 3.5 to Lightning makes a LOT more sense this way. You just don't jump from 3.5 to BT wireless abruptly pissing off customers. That's a bad way to burn them and make them want to switch to Android.

Absolutely agreed on this. What disturbs me is why didn't they use the thickness and flat edges on the new models? The 5.5 would have been much more comfortable to hold with this particular classic design with a flushed camera module. I think the curved edge design is a mistake.

Actually I think it's backward. They should have kept the 3.5 jack for one more iteration but this time they should have included a nice pair of wireless headphones to show people how great they are. Eliminating the 3.5 and having only one port to charge your phone and headphones seems like a silly idea that Apple would usually shut down at the first meeting. I'm surprised they're doing this but I'll wait until the event to be blown away.

They have to introduce wireless charging in this model. I don't see how they can't if they are removing the audio jack. I have BT headphones but if for some reason they go dead and I'm on a flight I'd lose my mind if I'd had to choose between charging and listening to engine noise and crying babies.
Wireless charging would also play nicely with the whole "embracing the wireless lifestyle" narrative Apple used to sell the MacBook. Wireless EarPods, wireless charging, iCloud backup, fewer reasons to need to plug in your iPhone.
