Rewatching Episode VII way too many times during the last 2.5 weeks, I gotta say I don't love The Force Awakens as much as the first couple times I saw it in the theater. Esp the first time in IMAX 3D which was awesome. There are huge flaws like when Maz's castle got destroyed and the only ones fighting were the main group. All those Troopers shooting who again? I don't like Kylo Ren as much as the first time but you never know how Ep 8 and 9 will play out that 8 might change my mind on him again. Will he surpass Vader? Nah! Don't really care for Finn and Poe. The only standout and easily best new character in it is Rey and maybe Artoo's update, BB-8. But I am not running out to buy their merchandise.

The story was obviously a rehash which was what I already felt BEFORE I saw it and perhaps SW7 is only an appetizer of the main course like every other first entry to a SW trilogy. Except the only characters I like in Ep 7 is as few as the Prequels which still had Yoda and Obi-Wan. Rey is good. I dig her and I would tap that Daisy Ridley. Perhaps less annoying than Luke and Anakin. Whether she is Anakin reincarnated is an interesting theory considering how she practically started to own Kylo Ren after she heard the Force and closed her eyes. But Poe and Finn and having a potential gay relationship? Are you serious? I don't like where SW is headed which is MCU territory.

Which leads to think that while Rogue One could be better than The Force Awakens, I still don't think any newer SW film whether the numbered or Anthology films will ever recapture the magic and likeable cast from the OT. By A New Hope, I already loved the cast. Perhaps their nostalgia is too powerful on me since I grew up on them. When I first saw TFA, I ranked it above ANH and ROTJ. Not it is below ROTJ but still superior to Ep 1 and 2. I flipped Empire over Sith because TESB was the only film where all my fav characters were there - Vader, Yoda, and Han and in fine form. They were all there in ROTJ but Yoda was dying by that point.

Before
1. III
2. V

7. II

Now (coming back to my senses)
1. V
2. III
3. IV
4. VI
5. VII
6. I
7. II

I predicted before seeing the trailer that Rogue One will be in the bottom tier maybe around where VII is. But after seeing TFA too many times and thinking it is below every OT film, it changed my predictions quite a bit because there aren't many new characters I can root for! My Top 3 favs are all dead! *Spoiler theory alert* Another beloved character could be killed in Episode VIII. Perhaps kill off all the old ones by Ep 9. While I think Episode VIII will be the BEST of this Sequel Trilogy for being the darkest and leaving a cliffhanger like TESB did, I still don't know if I could ever love a Disney/non-George Lucas SW as much as the other ones. Same with what they will do to Indiana Jones. It just doesn't feel the same.

2020 Prediction Now
1. V
2. III
3. IV
4. VI
5. VIII
6. Han Solo
7. IX
8. VII
9. Rogue One
10. I
11. II
12. Boba Fett (if Obi-Wan solo film, maybe #7). No interest in Fett.

The Han Solo is the real SW Anthology film I want to see. That could fall anywhere in the Top 4-6. Weird seeing Han not being Harrison Ford but it has a story and character I very much am interested in like the Kessel Run, meeting Chewie, and Jabba's bounty on him.

I will still go and watch Rogue One on opening day. Still Star Wars, baby. I still respect The Force Awakens for trying to appeal to a different demographic too and making SW popular and respectful again. I just can't expect them to be much better than all these cookie cutter MCU films.

I just watched Ip Man (2008) last week and can't wait to see Donnie Yen in SW. And perhaps Vader...

Even with Star Wars branding removed, I'd still be mega pumped for this! Really like the look of the trailer. I think I prefer these types of broad, separate adventures compared to character-based ones like the upcoming Han Solo film.

Also really glad that Star Wars is introducing more women into the SW universe. Male heroes are usually the default so it's kinda interesting to see that reversed, and that people are complaining about that.

I might like Rogue One more than The Force Awakens if I end up liking the characters more. But the tone seems dark like Garreth Edward's Godzilla 2014 film which was pretty mediocre when I first saw it but actually liked it more when I saw it multiple times at home. It is supposed to be an outer space war film.

Characters I liked from each SW trilogy -

OT -
Darth Vader
Yoda
Han Solo
R2-D2
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Chewbacca
Princess Leia

PT -
Yoda
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Qui-Gonn Jinn (new)

TFA -
Rey (new)
Kylo Ren (new), still unsure him
BB-8 (new)

OT generally had 70% of my favs and I didn't like the main hero in Luke. After seeing the trailer, my anticipation is about the same for Rogue One among the 2016 blockbuster films of this year.

2016
1. Captain America: Civil War
2. X-Men Apocalypse
3. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
4. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
5. Suicide Squad

Honorable mention: Star Trek Beyond

I think I might like Rogue One more over almost every movie except Cap 3. It might fall between the 7.5-7.7 on IMdb which is still better than BvS which has a fair score of 7.3 right now. I didn’t like the overrated Deadpool. Not into Ryan Reynolds' shtick. And I am NOT one of those SW fans complaining that Rogue One has another female lead. It might not be that cool for me who is a guy who might buy SW merchandising only to see another heroine but I don't mind equal opportunity here. I think better SW films like Ep 8, 9, and Han Solo are still ahead of us which should end this decade with a bang with SW 9 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 (no thank you, Avatar sequels).

Star Wars is starting to look Hunger Game-ish with another female heroine but I don't mind the diversifying roles with females and different ethnicities like Latino and Asian. The galaxy far, far away shouldn't be filled where the humans have an American accents and the rest are British.

Hopefully in Rogue One there are some standout characters that can create a stand-alone film for themselves for a future Anthology film beyond 2020. Nice diversity with Felicity Jones, Donnie Yen, Forest Whittaker, and Diego Luna.

Prior and right after Star Wars 7, I thought Kylo Ren could surpass Darth Vader as the greatest villain ever. Nah. Not after he unmasked himself, killed his papa, and got owned by Rey. Kylo Ren is to appeal to boys to sell toys and costumes. The one I will root for is Rey.

For years, I used to kick butt picking characters like Chun-Li, Katana, Mileena, Ling Xiaoyu, Nina Williams, Tifa Lockhart, Yuna, and Lulu in various video games. My 2nd favorite racehorse is a mare named Zenyatta. I very much like Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and Hit-Girl. I loved Wonder Woman in BvS: DoJ. I have no qualms having another SW female lead like Jyn Erso if she can kick ***.

I'm excited for sure to see it, but something about the trailer makes it look like a TV movie (like SyFy channel) to me. I like that they're filling in the back stories though.

I doubt we will see any of the characters we know, with the exception of Darth or some of the other characters that wear masks etc. This will be more about the band of spies/rebels who are able to get the plans.
And Mon Motha of course. But yes new characters to flesh out some of what happens in between episodes should be good. Let's face it there are hundreds of planets and alien races that hardly get touched in the other films. Lots of material for years to come.

We're definitely going to see Vader, you can even hear him (just) in the trailer. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Leia in the background/shadows without saying anything (or much) just the hand off for the plans that end up in R2.

Personally, I think this is great. It gives Disney the chance to create a genuine movie. One with individual characters, a short story arc and with real peril. We have no idea what happens except that the Rebellion does end up with the plans. We don't know how or who, if anyone survives. There is a LOT of scope for them.

So i wonder who is going to put on the suit? hayden christensen or will they find someone else!
They've already cast it, Spencer Wilding, usually a stuntman. He's been on set speaking lines (which will be dubbed). But. Is definitely not Hayden.

The Rey Erso theory sounds very interesting. Moreso if it is Erso than Skywalker since Jedis aren't supposed to reproduce and Luke being the father a bit too predictable? Explains their accent. Makes me root for Rey's possible younger mother a little more in Rogue One.

Oh!!! This is good! Very interesting and that could be a nice way of pulling them all together. So I wonder if she will be in any of the other episodes or stand alone movies?

Looks like Darth Vader will be making an appearance. I wonder who will be the actors they use?
Looks like Disney said it needed to lighten up a bit, so some scenes are being filmed again.
I hope it doesn't get too Disneyfied.

Somehow I missed this thread. Please give us some new original story elements! Fingers Crossed. :D
I guess there was a major script rewrite during production so we will see.

Much of the cast and director Gareth Edwards will regroup in mid-June for another round of shooting. The move is happening after execs screened the film and felt it was tonally off with what a “classic” Star Wars movie should feel like. The pic has not yet been tested before audiences, but one source describes the cut as having the feel of a war movie.

The goal of the reshoots will be to lighten the mood, bring some levity into the story and restore a sense of fun to the adventure.
