Loved the film. Didn't feel like a conventional Star Wars movie in the way it was shot. I didn't think I'd enjoy that sort of style for SW, but it worked very well for R1; almost like the original EU, exploring the SW universe more.

I was disappointed by TFA and I was half worried that I was some sort of stubborn Star Wars hipster for not liking it despite my best efforts, but R1 really was enjoyable and rejuvenated my enthusiasm for seeing more films. I can't wait to see what else comes out.

The only two critiques I had of the film were
1) I didn't care for the soundtrack as a whole relative to Williams' works. The action music was mostly on par, but the themes were far less memorable.
2) There were no original characters I liked as much as Rey (which is probably a good thing)

That being said, it looked, felt, and was of similar quality to the OT. And Darth Vader. Come on. I just want more Vader films.

Two thoughts on your response.
1. I'm glad they didn't use Williams, and I thought the soundtrack was good, it was noticeably not Williams but it good in its own right.

2. I'm so glad they didn't trot out the old characters just for the same of cameos. I mean It made no sense to see a young Han Solo, since he wasn't connected to the rebellion yet, or Luke. I thought it was a bit contrived to see R2D2/C3PO but since they were on the Tantive IV, it made sense that they were on Yavin 4 prior to that.

This movie was fresh on a number of fronts and I think we needed that freshness.

I need to see it again. Visually I loved the movie. I still don't know how much I liked it overall though. I am glad it wasn't following the formula from the other movies, but I think I need to view it again at home.

Still dreaming about the heroes on that hammerhead corvette. :)

Yeah that whole ship went down with the Star Destroyer.

SPOILER...

When Darth's ship arrives and you see a few of the rebel ships making the jump and then get slammed into the Star Destroyer. Freaking loved it and you could see the "hope" fade if you will. Like uh oh, this isn't good.

That's one of the best parts of the entire movie! I felt like I was looking at moving concept art.

Rogue One (2016)

Real Title: Not only is this in the Star Wars ecosystem, this *IS* Star Wars Episode 3.5. Don't let them fool you, lol. :D

Visuals: First half of movie is TOO DAMNED DARK. What the hell, a recent movie I saw called The Arrival was too dark too. Do film makers think they they are being creative, or giving the story atmosphere? No, they are making it hard to watch! :p
The best X-Wing flying, I remember seeing.
Some interesting digital recreations of characters as mentioned by @Apple fanboy but they look a little off, lol. The best such digital recreation I've seen to date is a young Michael Douglass in Ant Man. I'm tell'n ya, soon we'll have digital actors... Article on digital recreations, not a spoiler afaic, but it reveals a prominent character from Episode 4.
Perfect?: No and some scenes/comments/interactions are made primarily to tie it to the original trilogy, but had a somewhat gratuitous feel to them, although it's a minor critique. Come on, we've all seen the originals, we don't need someone to warn, "You'd better watch yourself" just to make us feel nostalgic! ;)
Best Character: K-2SO. Cassian Andor's looks and accent reminds me of Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride. He could be Mandy Patankin's son. ;) Felicity Jones and Mads Mikkelsen, thumbs up!
Best Star Wars Film?: No, that still goes to episodes 4-6 (your pick), but much better than Episode 7.
Upsetting for kids?: I think most kids can handle the abundant PG-13 primary character deaths portrayed in the film. See spoiler.
Worth Seeing: Yes.

Did frick'n everyone die in the book too? So much for reoccurring roles in a new franchise. ;)
How many books made up the Rogue Squadron series? What other stories are there to tell?

Not everybody died in the Rouge Squadron stories (although quite a few did!).

I was glad to see everyone on the mission perish. I know it is weird to say, but it brought a sense of realism to the movie. I was sad to see it, but I liked it.

I also really liked to the two characters, the blind man and the guy with the heavy duty machine gun/laser gun. I can't remember their names but I really liked them. Their demise was particularly touching. IMHO.

If they'd survived it would have been a bit weird as none of them were there in A New Hope.
That being said many franchises would have not worried about that continuity and just written a happy ending regardless.

I liked the fact that they all perished as well. It added to the feel of "this is a sacrificial all or nothing mission for the greater good of the galaxy and none of us are greater than the mission."

Yeah, I was on the okay fence myself. I wanted a lot more character development (please don't hire Donnie Yen for a minute of wushu staff and wise sayings. Oh...wait.). Ditto for Jiang Wen, they were wasted characters as was the Imperial pilot).

That said, I really liked Cassian & K-2SO - I thought okay these two make me believe the folks in the rebellion would do anything to see the Empire fall. Cassian was a hardened soldier. I liked that. And K-2SO was anti-3PO, he was hilarious.

Jyn was alright because of her ties to Galen. And poor Krennic just had a really crappy few days there didn't he?:p

Overall, it felt like a war movie in spots, but it wasn't a necessary story to tell imo. Still, it was better than TFA and that is saying a lot.

I only heard myself go "Aw man!" when K-2SO went down, not the humans. Partially because I knew they'd all die and partially because most of them were so paperthin as characters I just didn't care. I'll be seeing again with older sister and keeping my mouth shut. I know what I'll laugh at and what I'll think about, but I certainly wouldn't complain if we saw another movie with Cassian and K-2SO on some spy mission.

My friend who saw it with me was hilarious when Vader cut loose. She was so happy ("Best scene in the whole movie! Yes! Yes!" Fist pump and everything). I like going to the movies with her because she can be more entertaining than the movies themselves. That's not to say my fan girl doesn't bust loose, I was equally silly while watching Doctor Strange.

There were definitely parts like that. That whole part with the ambush on the imperial "tank" felt like something from "Saving Private Ryan" set in the world of Star Wars basically.

So did we. The theater we saw it in, you could hear the collective "gasp" when he went down.
Having never read the books or watched anything other than EP1-7 I had no idea what the story would be. I enjoyed it very much as a standalone and just compared it to other film entertainment for whether I had fun... and I did.

That's a win for me.

However, I want K-2SO found in a dingy scrap heap on a lonely remote outpost after being found on a ruined world by intergalactic Space Scavengers in a Firefly Class vessel and resurrected in EP 4.5, EP 5.75 or at the latest EP 8
